FCC done! / Shipping to North America / Chinese New Year

Dear All,

First, we do apologize for the delay. The Omate TrueSmart is a complex product, it's not just a Bluetooth or WiFi gadget, it's also in many ways more difficult to mass produced than any smartphones due to its form factor and assembly process. Most of the backers have been ugraded to 1GB+8GB which were supposed to be available by the end of December so there is no any pending October Edition as far as we have shipped all of the 512MB+4GB October Edition. The other ones have been upgraded to 1GB+8GB.

As for our process, we assemble according to model version (memory / frequency), then pack on pallets, then ship to HK where we have to repack them according to each pledge (some of you have T-Shirts, some have pledged a second cradle, etc...) therefore please kindly note that there are several weeks between shipment start and final delivery to the last backer of each batch.

As informed during the last update, we submitted our report to a TCB authorized by the FCC Bureau. We finally got registered today and here is the link where you can see the FCC status: our grantee code is 2ABF5:

Shipment Status:

Good news / Bad news

1) We have assembled 1,500 units 1GB+8GB 1900MHz US version, most of them are packed based on your pledge and will be ready to ship this weekend from Hong Kong to North America so shipment will not be affected by the Chinese New Year holidays. Once again, there are several weeks between shipment start and final delivery to the last backer of each batch.

2) On Monday, we have stopped the assembly preparation of the 1GB+8GB 2100MHz EU version because it did not pass our quality control. We will get new PCBA after Chinese New Year. We are very upset about it but this is the life of a project and we are responsible for the TrueSmart quality so we do hope you will accept waiting a few more weeks to get a qualified TrueSmart in February.

IMPORTANT: Please note that whatever the delays and the challenges we are facing, You - backers will be the very first in the World to have your hands on the 1GB+8GB TrueSmart Extreme Edition.

From what we saw at CES, the TrueSmart is still by far the most advanced and the most high-end smartwatch to date. That’s also the feedback we got from our industrial partners.

We are also amazed by the passion generated by the TrueSmart; that means we are designing the right product. We are a humble small startup, we do not have the 9 figures marketing budget of some our competitors.

Here is an article about Laurent’s vision about the wearable industry and the smartwatches from World’s Top 5 Telco - Telefonica: The place where M2M experts connect with you:

As you may know we are entering the Chinese New Holidays period, it will be the Year of the Horse which is related to speed and higher level (jump) ;-) That also means our factory will be closed from Jan 26 to Feb 9 so shipment will only start back from the second week of February.

Due to this delay, we are postponing the next round of #TrueSmartHackaton to give more time to the developers to attend the contest:

#TrueSmartHackaton Number 2:

- Feb 21

- Feb 28

- March 7

- March 14

- March 21

Each winner will be rewarded with a special Hacker Edition of the TrueSmart which will be shipped end of February. These Limited Edition models will be marked from #1 to #10 with a customized laser printed battery cover + each winner will be granted VID early bird samples (Very Important Developer) of any new product development of Omate in 2014. We look forward to developing the TrueSmart Ecosystem with the Omate Developer community! Thanks for your support,

Best regards,

Omate TrueSmart Team

Where is my shirt, extras or refund?

    2. Creator Daniel on February 10, 2014

@Eric Not everyone got a tracking number because the new shipping company that Omate used to ship the watches shipped them without regard for which ones were actually supposed to ship.

Nobody - not myself, not Laurent, not anybody, ever said tracking numbers weren't important.

I have spent time fostering a relationship with Omate not because I like making kissy-faces but because it's my duty to make sure every backer gets what they pledged for and if it seems as though they won't I need to make that much more of an effort to see that it happens.

Some of the information that isn't shared with you guys frankly would not do you any good, such as "tracking info" because the majority, rather than understand that sometimes bad things just keep happening, would rather believe they are being swindled when there are many posts indicating so much satisfaction with their devices.

We're humans, who, even though we don't want to admit it, will believe a negative review much more quickly than a positive one. And, in the event we don't see too many positive reviews, we'll just assume there's nothing positive about what we're looking at because we're incapable of forming our own opinions.

Because, you know, why would forming your own opinion be important for personal growth. Forming a personal opinion on your own? That's just crazy talk.

    3. Creator Eric on February 9, 2014

@Mike Ensor, apparently they just show up. Per, I'm guessing insider, Daniel "not everyone got a tracking number", because, you know, why would that be important for shipments. Tracking them? That's just crazy talk.

    4. Creator Derrell Johnson on February 9, 2014

Sending a comment from my TrueSmart! Received it a few days ago and it was well worth the wait! Sideloaded Google Play store with no problems. All apps I've tried work and surprisingly, look great on the small screen. New Google Now Launcher works really well. Companion app needs work but these are early days. Fantastic job Omate!

    5. Creator Alex Lewis on February 7, 2014

No word on tracking or sign of a box... In Orlando.
If you receive yours, please post the area you live in to offer some glimmer of hope.

    6. Creator Bob Romero on February 7, 2014

I will believe it when the box shows up at the door... :-(

    7. Creator Mike Ensor on February 6, 2014

Were we supposed to get a tracking number or does it just show up?

    8. Creator James Watson on February 6, 2014

Got mine in the mail today! Still playing with it.

Got mine in the mail yesterday. Loving it so far!

"In the press one can permanently read about new and great smartwatches."

      Name two.

"Why did I support the project on kickstarter? Because I wanted to have this smartwatch in a very early stage."

And you're getting one in a very early stage. Most of what you'd hear you wouldn't normally be hearing because normally people like us are not part of the process.

"Now omate puts me off with every new newsletter, telling me that I will not get my watch until next month, next month etc. because of this and that."

Yep. The delays suck. Hard. Not as hard as the lack of communication, but them's the bones my friend.

"Then they tell me that they have some watches, but we European donkeys do not get one we've been sold a pup."

When did they tell you that?

"I would like to cancel, because I do not want to wait for the next newsletter telling me that perhaps some the Americans backers get one."

Hundreds of U.S. backers are getting theirs already (with some stuck in customs because of a storm). More are going out soon.

    11. Creator Dean Shcherbinin on February 4, 2014

C'mon guys, we owe the omate pioneers a break, as this is the first time in the world's history that a gadget is assembled in China :)
Nobody could foresee that FCC takes time... Or that Chinese assembly may present a challenge...
If, despite all chances, this team manages to ship our watches *before* going out of business, we will own a rare, "only X,000 produced", watch that will appreciate in value like that collector's Omega James Bond edition :)

    12. Creator Frank on February 4, 2014

It is getting ridiculous and I`m really getting annoyed. In the press one can permanently read about new and great smartwatches. Why did I support the project on kickstarter? Because I wanted to have this smartwatch in a very early stage. Now omate puts me off with every new newsletter, telling me that I will not get my watch until next month, next month etc. because of this and that. Then they tell me that they have some watches, but we European donkeys do not get one we've been sold a pup. I would like to cancel, because I do not want to wait for the next newsletter telling me that perhaps some the Americans backers get one.

    13. Creator Eric on February 3, 2014

Well isn't that nice. Meh, whatever, as I said, when I get it, I'll get it, not holding my breath. Sent a follow up email to check on mine today just for the heck of it.

    14. Creator Daniel on February 3, 2014

Not everyone got a tracking number.

    15. Creator Eric on February 3, 2014

Yawn, still no tracking number for me. I've honestly lost a lot of interest on the watch and filed this away as a loss for me, when I get it, I'll get it.

    16. Creator Talo Hubert on February 1, 2014

I just realised : What about the poor 13 who pledged for the Christmas Edition XD ? Do you think they are still stuck in 2013 ^^ ?

    17. Creator Mark Hall on January 31, 2014

well, as i am a early bird #1 (NOV) with no tracking number, I am assuming not all NOV units are going out. I highly doubt more are going make and ship more out next week; which is the first week in February. I am hoping that it gets shipped by April.

    18. Creator Talo Hubert on January 31, 2014

Where I'm going is that I'm really glad Daniel always give us insider information, but isn't that Omate's Job ?

    19. Creator Daniel on January 31, 2014

@Talo Only by the community, if it is the case. I'm a professional just doing this on his spare time.

    20. Creator Pawan K Shrestha on January 31, 2014

@Talo Hubert, Not sure where you are going with that one but I have been closely following Daniel's work on his G+ post. I am sure it's going to help us a lot once we receive our watches. He is doing all of these on top of his busy schedule so I think the least we can do is thank him.

    21. Creator Talo Hubert on January 31, 2014

@Daniel, Have you been hired as community manager lately ^^ ?

    22. Creator Nicholas Pires on January 30, 2014

@Omate - Out of interest what happened now that the EU run didn't pass your QA is this a loss on Omates side or the manufacturer you've chosen? I assume this all costs money so I'd like to know if this is going to affect your ability to get the EU orders out.

    23. Creator hector lorenzo on January 30, 2014

My address has changed, and i have no way to communicate with these people, Ideas welcomed

    24. Creator Daniel on January 30, 2014

The units shipping are the November/December units. The shipping company that Omate left in charge for distribution mixed up the shipments, so the October units won't be shipping until the 1st week of February. EU units should come after that.

      It's not *that* delayed. Relax.

    25. Creator Clay Bowen on January 30, 2014

I haven't gotten a shipping notification for my Developer's Edition FIRST DELIVERY (October), so I'm guessing that the 1500 units spoken of aren't the entire US order. Since the next run will be EU editions, it probably will be October 2014 before I get the product. Well, they did say delivery in "October" and they didn't state the year so...

    26. Creator Stas Oskin on January 30, 2014

Thanks, I figured out already it's a different model.

    27. Creator Daniel on January 30, 2014

Because it isn't the same watch. Would you like to be educated about it?

    28. Creator Stas Oskin on January 29, 2014

I have a question - how come watch with same spec is being sold right now in Russia for 170$, an even has reviews already:

And we all still waiting for our backed watches, that we all paid more for them?

Here is the product site in English:

They even have same comparison graphic:

    29. Creator wilson yu on January 29, 2014

I also got my tracking number, which is good news. It's kind of strange that the tracking site says it arrived in Germany. There is no information on when it will arrive in the US.

    30. Creator Mark Hall on January 29, 2014

So if we are not one of the 1500 in this batch when is the next batch for north america? Summer? Fall? 2016?

    31. Creator Brian Harris on January 29, 2014

Also received my tracking number. Several others have reported the same on Google+. Will be exciting to see it arrive!

    32. Creator Pawan K Shrestha on January 29, 2014

FWIW, got my tracking number for US dev edition. More people are reporting now :)

    33. Creator Daniel on January 27, 2014

They have to send shipping notifications one at a time. You likely won't hear about it for at least a day or two.

    34. Creator Kicker- Hopefully It Will Start on January 26, 2014

Is anyone getting any shipping notifications? The use of "several weeks" phrase in the sentence is already scaring me! And I paid for 1GB/8GB edition along with some cables!!!
Once again, there are several weeks between shipment start and final delivery to the last backer of each batch.

    35. Creator Eric on January 26, 2014

The last communication I received from TS was on 12/19/13 (when I asked, for the first time, for an update on my watch). I was told "Yes, your watch now is 1G/8G, and I will start sending it out in the middle of next month."

It's now 1/26 and I haven't gotten a shipping notification or anything and per this update "most" of the 1500 US versions were shipping this weekend.

I'm not upset anymore as the $ spent is old $ and makes no sense getting upset over something already done, but I'm disappointed. Flame me if you will, but I'm just expressing my feelings about this experience.

    36. Creator Daniel on January 26, 2014

The earliest you'll hear anything is Tuesday.

    37. Creator Joey Alexander on January 26, 2014

Regardless, the watches should have started shipping. Has anyone in the US received tracking numbers yet?

    38. Creator Daniel on January 24, 2014

@Joey: I've invested a lot of my personal and professional time on this project to the point where I can safely say it does not matter what unit I backed, how much I pledged, or when I'm getting my units (hint: after the rest of you).

      Enjoy your evening.

    39. Creator Anthony Garrett on January 24, 2014

I hate all the delays but these comments are crazy. You will get your watch and probably complain anyway as you just can't please everybody.

    40. Creator Joseph Litko on January 23, 2014

Delay or no delay -- I'm still looking forward to getting my hands on one and believe that the TS is the right choice in the smartwatch category. < chugging kool-aid >

    41. Creator Joey Alexander on January 23, 2014

@daniel did you even back the extreme? Having prioritized shipping would be a nice compromise. Instead of offering anything useful, omate just gave us further insult. Delays are one thing but like the EU backers we were screwed by LLP.

    42. Creator Talo Hubert on January 23, 2014

@arne hess , or they could just offer a refund for those who are no longer interested

    43. Creator Christopher on January 23, 2014

Another update, another delay. I do thoroughly appreciate the transparency and honesty though - it's not as common as it should be on Kickstarter. As an EU backer and the fact the new PCB's are due mid-Feb, can we expect to see shipments (assuming it passes your testing and quality checks) towards the end of Feb, or are we looking at March/April?

      ... Or October 2014?

    44. Creator Arne Hess on January 23, 2014

Following my yesterday's comment I've reached out to Omate and Laurent Le Pen, CEO of Omate and Nick NM Yap, Head of the Omate media team were so kind to explain the situation and how the Pearl smartwatch is related to the TrueSmart 2.0. Was a pretty good discussion and as much as frustrated I'm as a European backer, like the rest of us here, and as unpleasant the delay is, there's nothing we can do. But I'm quite confident that we all will hold our pledged smartwatches in our hands - sooner or later (but better later than never or faulty). Feel free to read Omate's feedback at the::unwired:

    45. Creator Nao on January 22, 2014

      @D M
      I know such a thing. . .
However, many times extended the delivery date?
Prospect is he too sweet. . .
Information such shit like sweet prospects do not need!
I do not need excuses. Prove the results.

    46. Creator D M on January 22, 2014

Guys, there's no guarantee that a Kickstart project will EVER deliver a final product. That's the nature of Kickstarter, if it's only delayed we're lucky. The Omate team seems to be making best effort and that's all you can expect. Complaining about limits and refunds is, well, you're entitled to opinion, but it sounds like petulance.

    47. Creator Nao on January 22, 2014

I'm signed up for the EarlyBird # 1.
Delivery time I should of October right?
This is the limit of patience soon.
I'm going showed a lot understanding to you.
      But it's already a limit.
      For God's sake.

    48. Creator Erik Jensen on January 22, 2014

Hello Omate Im blaclisten on you site becouse I ask for my 264$ pledge back
Money the owner CEO Laurent Le Pen (find him on Google +)personally has promised me to return again and againbut without noting happens

. The first montch Omate say they will make a return via PayPal but then some guy find out that PayPal have closed Omates account!

Then Omate ask for my banks international SWIFT nr and my accountnr and they have confirm they have received them

      . But again nothing happens.

Everytime I ask what happens they say "Dont worry.."
      . But I'm worried now!

If they can't pay back 264 $ as the promise, then must they be bankrupt or just criminel? And why have PayPal closes Omate account - is that normal that PayPal don't make business with a big firm?
Where are the money? I can see there are hundrede preorders and backers that npw scream for a refund
But until know is there only two that say they have there momey back. Omate use one of them in marketing as a "proof " that al get a refumd if they write a claim to them, but that is clearly not truth at all!

    49. Creator Barry Sewell on January 22, 2014

Thanks Arning for the PCBA info.
Jonas loved your first answer. Never a truer word was said in jest.

    50. Creator Talo Hubert on January 22, 2014

Well, me I didn't backed the extreme edition, I backed the EU 1GB/4GB Dev Edition, which Omate was already unable to deliver.

They then upgraded me to the Extreme Edition, which was nice. But now, I just want my money back.
