Shipment of the first batch of Developer Edition / #TrueSmartHackaton

Dear Backers,

We are thankful for your patience and consideration.

We have officially started shipping the Developer Edition 512MB+4GB / 2100MHz TrueSmart. About 1,000 backers will receive their TrueSmart in the course of the next two weeks.

As you know, production runs are split in batches according to the different models. For the last two weeks, we have implemented the continuous improvement plan actions set from the Pilot Runs #1 and #2 but the final assembly of the TrueSmart has been tougher than expected and here are some of the reasons of the delays:

• Each TrueSmart goes through a long CNC process of its stainless steel casing then they are tested in our lab to make sure they can pass the IP67 rating.

• We have faced a high failure rate of the curved touch panel during our Pilot Runs so we had to rework the casing to make it fit properly. We have hired two Quality Engineers to follow this new process directly at the stainless steel casing factory.

• We have modified the wristband tooling to a more robust design.

• We have qualified a better water-resistant loudspeaker supplier.

• The Ocharger is now fully qualified and is in Mass Production.

• We have received the US 3G antenna from our supplier based on the October fine-tuned samples we provided to FCC so production can start for US backers.

Current working view of the shipment planning start per model:

1. 512MB+4GB (2100MHz EU 3G): End of Nov

2. 512MB+4GB (1900MHz US 3G): Mid of Dec

3. 1GB+4GB (1900MHz US & 2100MHz EU 3G): Mid of Dec

4. 1GB+8GB (1900MHz US & 2100MHz EU 3G): End of Dec

We are doing our best to make sure every TrueSmart will be shipped before Xmas but it is still a challenge for some of the models as we must ship them one by one and repackage them with the goodies and accessories each of you selected.

This is actually the main reason of the delay right now rather than engineering issues.

Please be assured that we are dedicated to assemble and ship these models in priority.

In parallel, we are working closely with industrial partners to enhance the TrueSmart connected hardware and software ecosystems with new app partnership every week.

In order to keep pioneering and innovating in the Smartwatch 2.0 segment Omate created, we will run two global virtual hackatons dedicated to the TrueSmart.

#TrueSmartHackaton Rules:

Timeline: 5 weeks: From Friday Dec 13th to Friday Jan 10th (the end of CES Las Vegas)

Terms: Developer must share photos or videos of a brand new feature or app using the hashtag #TrueSmartHackaton to any of the following social media G+ / FB / Twitter. (Press simultaneously both side buttons to Print Screen the TrueSmart display)

Award: Limited TrueSmart Hacker Edition (#1 to #10) laser printed with name of each winner that we will select every Friday. (Total 5 winners for the 1st Hackaton)

For the Developers who may not be able to participate to the 1st #TrueSmartHackaton due to the delays of some of the models, we will run a 2nd #TrueSmartHackaton from End of January until the end of February (the end of MWC Barcelona)

Same rules:

 #TrueSmartHackaton Number 1:

- Dec 13

- Dec 20

- Dec 27

- Jan 3

- Jan 10

#TrueSmartHackaton Number 2:

- Jan 31

- Feb 7

- Feb 14

- Feb 21

- Feb 28

Omate will select a winner every Friday during the Hackaton time and each winner will be rewarded with a special Hacker Edition of the TrueSmart which will be shipped end of February. These Limited Edition models will be marked from #1 to #10 with a customized laser printed battery cover.

We look forward to developing the TrueSmart Ecosystem with the Omate Developer community!

Alright, of the 5 Developers who actually have a TS, which is the #TrueSmartHackaton Number 1 winner for December 13???

And please explain how your contest is even remotely fair to developers in the second contest, seeing as how the pool contestants will be MUCH larger. Well, if you ever actually get them out to us.

      I've received my Omate 512/4GB 3G 2100 yesterday.
After wear it a day, a few questions :
      1. How to automatic on/off using gesture? I've downloaded OwatchOn but seems it's not working
      2. I downloaded the oclock app to change the watch face, but can not make as lock screen. Please tell me how to do if it is possible

Anyway, the battery's last for 14-16 hours (800mAh) after fully charged with normal usage.

In three days they pick the first winner of the Special Edition TS from their TrueSmartHackaton contest. Pity that it won't be a fair contest as only a true handful of developers actually have a TS in their hands!

I got the 512/4gb US 2100 early Oct Dev edition. Was told on Google plus It would be shipped "in a couple days" as of Nov 16. Have yet to hear anything yet. Hoping it shows up soon. I don't mind waiting cause I back a developed project, however more communication and clarity of FCC and ship dates would be great.

No notification, I am an Oct delivery backer, 2100MHz, vanilla watch, so I assume I'm part of the 800 units that have already been shipped. Would be nice to have a tracking number.

I would also go for the 8GB Version if I knew at that time, that there is no advantage on shipping over the 4GB Version. But I guess I was to impatient, something that you should never be when dealing with kickstarter.
I am also convinced, that OMATE is trying their best to get the units to us as fast as possible.
The Google Playstore is something I would prefered to have shipped by default in order to be able to gift the watch without the need for me to set it up first.
There is already a nice mod available thanks to some great dedication from capable developers.
asking for refund? come on guys... be serious.

      Jakkris Tangkuampien on

@Sean - Yup. Mine's the 1GB/4GB model so I'm kinda in the middle. I was very tempted to go with 8GB - the only reason that I didn't was Omate's indication at that time, as you pointed out, that 8Gb would require a little more time. They also said that 512MB -> 1GB would not.....so all in all, I think it's safe to say that whatever was stated/indicated before is literaly 'history' now.

Omate had very good intentions and energy around the funding period and offered as much as they could have in terms of flexibility. Let's hope and see that they continue to honor and support us backers. And I have no hesitation in saying that us as backers should get all the priorities for all resources - even at the cost of potential delay to pre-orders. After all, as so many have pointed out, we pay, funded and supported a Project and not the product and so are at more risk than pre-orders who paid for the actual product itself and so have more avenues to get 'refunded' than we do.

    14. Missing avatar

      Sean Machan on

@ Jakkris - While possible, it would be worthy to note that Omate did say the 8GB version would require extra time. That information was in no way hidden when Omate succumbed to the backers asking for a 8gb model.

    15. Missing avatar

      Jakkris Tangkuampien on

@James, @Eric. Putting all the info together:

      - This communication indicates all backers' TS will be shipped in Dec.
      - Omate's FB incidated that retail Pre-Orders will be shipped in Dec.

Given Omate's prioritization schedule as outlined by Omate with no confirmed distinction between Kickstarter VS Retail pre-orders, it's very likely that 512MB+4GB (2100MHz EU 3G) "Pre-Orders" will be fulfilled before 1GB+8GB (1900MHz US & 2100MHz EU 3G) "KickStarter" for example.

      1. 512MB+4GB (2100MHz EU 3G): End of Nov

      2. 512MB+4GB (1900MHz US 3G): Mid of Dec

      3. 1GB+4GB (1900MHz US & 2100MHz EU 3G): Mid of Dec

      4. 1GB+8GB (1900MHz US & 2100MHz EU 3G): End of Dec

      Eric on

@James Livingston. IMO, technically they are already in breach of TOC by advertising the watch as having access to Google Play Store but then reversing that claim after the pledge period was over stating the company was still seeking Google Certification. The availability of Google Play Store was, I'm sure, a big selling point to several backers. Ask yourself, would you buy an Android phone without Google backing?

The link that @Talo Hubert posted, when translated shows this under the graphic "Google Play Store available soon?":

"The TrueSmart should be the first watch to incorporate the Play Store. According to tests, it works, but Google has asked to withdraw because the product does not correspond to the requirements of Mountain View."

So Google has asked to withdraw the device from certification?

Granted, yes, with the great work from those at XDA this is easily corrected, but still, the point is, we were told something that was not true regarding the Play Store availability in the device.

    17. Missing avatar

      Jim on

@Talo Hubert - If retail customers receive theirs before Kickstarter Backers do, there will be some serious ramifications. I am sure Kickstarter themselves would not like that. I would consider not getting mine even though they are available via retail to be a breech of the Kickstarter TOC and grounds for legal action here in the US.

Remember, they are legally obliged to deliver everything as promised. Omate agreed to the legal requirement when signing up to raise funds via KS. This obligation is legally valid and enforceable in a court of law. I am pretty sure Omate knows this and would not jeopardize their business by selling devices to new people before delivering them to Backers. At least I hope they are not. But then again, winning a lawsuit and then placing a lien on a company's assets, including bank accounts, to satisfy judgements happens every day here in the US. Some companies are just run by idiots. Once again, I don't expect that to be the case with Omate.

I'll give Omate until the end of Dec for my watch, 1GB+4GB (1900MHz US & 2100MHz EU 3G (which I feel the extra $ paid for the upgrade actually delayed things), before I request a refund or contact my credit card for a chargeback.

I think at this time Omate has decided to ignore the fact several US Dev backers and standard backers have asked several times if the FCC has certified the Omate watch. It's starting to become BS with the mixed messages they are sending. I have had patients for the last two months with Omate but my patients are at the end of the rope. I just ask be honest , keep things updated, and start paying more attention to those who have helped Omate get funded. I dabble in development with android. I even want to try and work with things with Google Glass and the TrueSmart but with out the missing watch that is impossible.

I think its awesome we have Loki and the others working to figure out problems with the units they have but because there are so many other devs with out their devices its only hurting development more.

They have repeatedly stated that they would ship developer versions first... This started with the pledge descriptions and has been repeated numerous times in updates, comments, etc.
This latest update says that they will be shipping some developer versions (512/4) "real soon now" but no mention of the 1g/4g developer versions. I guess if you read between the lines and make assumptions, it appears that the 1g/4g developer versions will get lumped in with the month later shipment of standard versions.
If that is the case, I'm sorry that I paid extra for the 1g/4g developer version.
Also, where is the SDK? They want to start a hackathon in a few weeks but no SDK!

Typical Omate communications again in this round. I upgraded to 1G/4G and now feel bad about not getting my developer edition sooner than the 512K/4G backers...after I paying $20 more for the dev edition. Yes, we can suggest to free upgrade to 1G/8G, but that will cause an additional 2-week delay. Why Omate wouldn't directly address a simple question regarding FCC cert.? These people have been very tricky in what they chose to imply. Also, if they are developing Companion Mode features, why wouldn't they spell out what is in development even during the campaign? If battery life really sucks as another poster reported, companion mode using only low-power BT may save the day. Seeing almost no one questioning about the companion mode features led me to wonder how many of you, especially in U.S., actually would bother switching between your cellphone and TS with only one SIM card, provided that your cellphone is already using a micro-SIM but not a regular SIM. Excitements aside, have you considered what your day-to-day practical use would be with TS?

    32. RoChess on

If some users get their TrueSmart this year, then Omate is part of the small group of KickStarter projects that ships within 2-3 months of the estimated date. There are some high profile projects that are more then a year past due, and then there is the unfortunate group of projects that fail and pledgers loose some or all of their money.

Why developers are asking for Omate to delay the consumer version ticks me off a bit, when the Google Android emulator is able to be configured on a 240x240 screen even before this project launched. The group of consumers who will pay full pre-order price is who you should be targetting for anyway, and you will receive your unit well before they do. Out of 4378 backers 1794 are developers units for sure and a large chunk of 832 backers more then likely as well. The 'consumer' units for this KickStarter are for the majority expert Android users who will allow Omate to iron out the bugs quickly that are bound to exist in a cutting edge product. I am a developer myself, and it does not matter how much testing we do in our team; give it to end-users and they find innovative ways to break it. Lacked the time to devote myself to developing for the TrueSmart, so opted to get two consumer editions myself.

What I would like to see Omate answer more directly are the burning questions regarding Google Play Store, FCC certification, Shipping tracking codes (China post is not extremly accurate with their tracking, but at least it is better then nothing).

Also now that their forwarder in Hong Kong is taking care of things and the Omate team has finished production models at their disposal, some more videos would be appreciated. And personally I am still waiting on the technical specifications of the battery, so that I can either look for an existing cell button charger that works or order the parts to build one myself.

    33. Leon Bryan on

@michael b Those numbers were pretty disheartening. Guess I'll just be running companion mode more than I thought.

@Omate But seriously, why aren't the 1/4 dev editions being upgraded to 1/8 "free of charge" editions to compensate for the time delay?? I can't help but feel like we got the shaft for picking to upgrade :-(

    34. Missing avatar

      Michael on

@Omate can you be more definitive of this statement?

"•We have received the US 3G antenna from our supplier based on the October fine-tuned samples we provided to FCC so production can start for US backers. "

Are you still waiting for the FCC approval? Or are you saying that you are ready to produce and ship the US models? The way I am reading it is that the sample you received from your supplier is the same that you sent to the FCC but you do not have a cert yet from FCC. Is this correct with the way you are communicating this?

    35. BJ Van Gundy on

@Mark I'm not sure about what is confusing. Confusing would be information that conflicts (as in some previous postings). This one is VERY clear. the intent, specific to your question, is to send watches based on the PHYSICAL hardware manufacturing run. They left off differentiating between the shipping dates of the rooted (Dev editions) vs. unrooted editions... because the schedule really isn't dependent upon those software configurations.

In fact, it is probably easier for them to manufacture the unrooted editions for delivery as that is a standard configuration for creation and, I'm guessing here, that to deliver unrooted editions THEY actually are doing the unrooting after manufacturing (maybe not.... might just have an "exception" imaging process).

Anyway. Hope it helps: Your 1G/4G Dev edition can be expected to be shipped "Mid Dec". I don't think that there is any differentiation between Dev and Non-Dev at this point with regard to shipping. Cheers!
