Update #19

TrueSmart is truly Smartwatch 2.0

When we started the design and development to create a Smartwatch, we wanted to create a new generation. Having much experience with developing technology products (a combination of mobile telecommunications and consumer electronics products), we knew we have the expertise as well as the access to the latest technology to do so. It's a matter of time till the ever miniaturizing of technology would make our ideas possible. Then came Pebble that ignited the world with the idea that Smartwatch is a very viable product. Pebble opened doors, we didn't need to explain Smartwatch to technology partners so hard anymore. While Pebble is still held as a yardstick by many, we've never based our ideas on it. As you can see, we have quite different ideas about how a new generation of Smartwatch should be.

We started with a watch design as reference, a 45mm size that is slightly larger than a dress watch while smaller than a sports watch. Suitable for outdoor active wear as well as office wear, keeping strictly to a watch look and feel. Meanwhile waiting for the miniaturization of technology to fit into our ideas. The breakthrough came when we designed the antennas into the belt and our telecommunications engineers successfully fine-tuned the placement and quality of the antennas and signal path.

Here we take a look back at the Pebble, and compiled a chart of specifications comparisons including the recent announcements by the big brands Samsung, Qualcomm, Sony's first attempt and second attempt recently announced, as well as Motorola. Interestingly from right to left, you can see incremental improvements between one product to the next. With TrueSmart, we never quite joined that incremental step, instead we set our sights far for a leap and we made that leap - Smartwatch 2.0.

The battle of David vs Goliath has just begun. We are in the lead with product, having a better product, but we will never match the any of the Goliaths in their marketing dollar nor media machine. We will winning this in another way, the David way - a smarter, faster, more responsive and better product with an awesome community. Every dollar raised here will make a difference, every backer joining us makes us stronger. Every effort will be made to develop with the community. We can win this - the TrueSmart gets even better with everyone. Help us, spread this mission to redefine Smartwatch 2.0, share this vision, share our message.

Here is the link to the comparison PDF, see for yourself the leap ahead.

      done :) 1010 USD Pledge.

      Off-Topic: Do I get a discount for bigger memory ? :D

Just to be clear, if I already placed a pledge of $199 for the Omate TrueSmart STANDARD Edition and one comes out with 8gb memory I can pay $50 pledge to benefit? What is the process for doing this? Will I be contacted directly by Omate with all additional options and costs before dispatch allowing me to choose or do I need to make the extra pledge now??

      @ Omate, @Jittasak Khowsathit:
Does the "flick gesture" mean, you move the watch in such a way that you can easily see its face, and then the screen is switched on? Some (Casio?) watches do so since years, and I had planned to propose that as an app or setting in the developer forum.... but if that existst already there is no need to do so.
4GB - > 8GB: Do I understand that right that the memory increase is ordered by increasing the pledge by additional 20$?

HI! I love the project and alrdy ordered my dev edition a few weeks ago .. Is or will there be a possibility to add NFC?

@Voinea Razvan Cristian There is no limit for a pledge!! We appreciate every pledge very much and will honor every pledge :-) Your calculation is correct :-) +$15 for each international shipping address. Meaning if it all goes to the same international address, then just add $15. Shipping in USA is free. Thanks for your support!!! :-)

Hello ! It is there a limit for a pledge? I mean, for example, can I pledge for 5 watches? this means a pledge equal to 199+199+199+199+199+15=1010 USD

Creator Omate on September 9, 2013

@Michael, As for pricing this is the pricing relevant now, for the viewers comparing now. The choice of channel, and the choice of how to get this to the user is a conscious choice that allows us to offer supporters the best deal, as is reflected in the chart. In future when we get to stores, and the pricing is different, the comparison chart will be updated then.

Creator Omate on September 9, 2013

@Michael B., it's only mainly Germany where it gets very good coverage. We have mentioned the similarities and differences, but for us to put it on a list is like comparing one smarter son against his other brother.

    9. Omate-logo-black2.small

Creator Omate on September 9, 2013

@Watts indeed, it's more accurate this way :-) Thanks for pointing it out. It helps too to remind everyone especially new viewers to help support the stretch goal hehe

@Stan Sokol, read the comments a few comments further down, it is explained in detail, a new package will be announced soon.

    11. Omate-logo-black2.small

Creator Omate on September 9, 2013

@Michael Polo, There's antennas designed into the straps so the straps can't be removed. Thanks for the suggestion, we will put up more pictures!!

    12. Missing_small

      Creator Michael B. on September 9, 2013

Will the Omate be sold with the exact same specifications later in shops for the same price? Or will it be more expensive? If the latter, it should be added as a note to the comparison.

    13. Missing_small

      Creator Michael B. on September 9, 2013

I think, the Pearl watch should be added to the comparison. It is the closest competitor and it gets the most media hype currently here (yes, more than the Samsung GG).

Great to see such smart approach! Maybe this has been answered before, but how to increase rom from 4 to 8gb?

    16. 1306933202767.small

Creator Michael Polo on September 8, 2013

Damn guys, the more I read of the watch the more awesome it all seems. Every one always has great feedback and questions.

Guys, what if the straps of the Smartwatch where detachable so that a cord could be put through the strap openings and hung around the neck, much like a stopwatch like trainers and coaches use? May not seem the most practical but it is a watch after all.

      One more thing:
Could you guys put up more pics of the Smartwatch from a few angles and such???

      Thanks for your time

@omate: Gurwu is right, Qualcomm Toq is the one with the Mirasol display, its their in house technology. Low energy display which allows the "always on" feature.

    18. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator Henry Swantner on September 8, 2013

@Omate, I just thought I'd pose the question before I decided. That sounds reasonable to me.

    19. Mapashito.small

      Creator MAPASHITO_BCN on September 8, 2013

@Watts, This is only a personal decision, I am right too with 4 Gb ROM and 1 Gb RAM, but maybe some people / developers have the need of 8 Gb ROM, despite it is not possible to send before December , I think I have readed here. So, in short, it is only your own decision. I think you are right with 4 Gb ROM, because maybe both you and I (and lots of persons here) don't need much more actually. I hope my answer will be helpful for you.

    20. Old-lightbulb_1_.small

Creator Watts on September 8, 2013

Can someone explain why is there a need for larger ROM? 4gb vs 8gb? I did upgrade to 1gb RAM, don't think I'll need 8gb ROM.

    21. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator Jittasak Khowsathit on September 8, 2013

I guess I plan to mostly use an analog watch face and having the screen on all the time kinna makes it look like a real watch to other people too. Another thing is when I'm in a boring meeting with my boss and want to secretly glance at the time it would be more convenient doing so without having to flick my wrist or touch the screen (quite an unpleasant feeling for the person talking to have an audience show a gesture of not enjoying the talk). So if the battery life is going to last for at least 12 hrs that would be fantastic!

    22. Mapashito.small

      Creator MAPASHITO_BCN on September 8, 2013

@Omate, @Jittasak Khowsathit, "May we ask why do you want the screen always on?" ---- Response: To play Ingress??? hehehe! Just kidding (but I don't find another reason as to be "always-on" with the screen... Maybe watching films? But little screen for this scenario (maybe it is possible but... better a mobile for that? uuh?.).

    23. Omate-logo-black2.small

Creator Omate on September 8, 2013

@Jittasak Khowsathit, we'll get back to you with that answer soon, we're still testing other usage scenarios, and will get to screen always on. With the flick gesture you don't need to touch the screen to check time. May we ask why do you want the screen always on?

    24. Omate-logo-black2.small

Creator Omate on September 8, 2013

@ZUUL42, this is how we're gonna do it... Early Birds #1/#2 each has $20 and $10 discounts respectively. We have the list, we know who you are. When/if you switch to the new $249 package we will offer you $20 / $10 discount in options (eg. cables, keychain, Tshirt, maybe sdcards, bluetooth headsets too).

    25. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator Henry Swantner on September 8, 2013

So, assuming you already bought in to $20 extra to move from 512 MB to 1 GB RAM, it'll be $30, $40, or *$50* extra to move from a 4 GB ROM to an 8 GB ROM depending on which pledge group Standard, EARLY BIRD #2, or #1 you bought in at?

Hmm. So much for the 1000 early bird specials backers.

Couldn't it be another add-on with the understanding delivery will be later?

    26. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator Jittasak Khowsathit on September 8, 2013

So if I set my screen to always be on how long would the battery last (like 12 hrs)?

    27. 966008_591787014179330_1126142791_o.small

Creator Philipp Wiesner on September 8, 2013

      @jittasak
No the screen turns off after some time like a smartphone. It will be activated only if you flick your wrist, so this saves energy :-

    28. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator Jittasak Khowsathit on September 8, 2013

So for toq their screen is left "on" all the time is this the same case for omate? So if I'm understanding right we have a "display that is always on" for 100 hrs?

    29. Mapashito.small

      Creator MAPASHITO_BCN on September 8, 2013

I like all the specs about this Omate truesmart, but the more I am waiting for is... playing INGRESS on it !!! It must be, at least, curious, and even a bit geeky but hey, I'm a geek hehehehe.
It would be great to see a short video in-play game Ingress. It could be possible??? Thanks a lot.
Keep doing so well , friends.

@Omate Thanks for the answer, I want more space and I have no problem to raise my pledge, I´ll wait for the next update!

    31. Omate-logo-black2.small

Creator Omate on September 8, 2013

@Watts, going at the current rate, unless something drastic happens (touch wood), it's very likely that the $720K stretch goal will be reached. It's the $800K / $900K stretch goals that needs everyone to help with stretching, and hopefully even more. We're gonna give it all we've got in the coming days.

    32. Omate-logo-black2.small

Creator Omate on September 8, 2013

@Pedro Fernandez Ruiz, it's gonna be this way with the 8Gb... a new $249 pledge with be created with a reward of 1Gb/8Gb for December (due to supply and production, we can't make a 8Gb earlier than that). This will package will be for Users and Developers, everyone who pledges for this package can opt to join the Developers Program (SDK, Rooted etc) just like the Developers Editon. We do hope serious developers will stay with their October packages and be the firsts / leaders of the developer community. An official announcement (in the form of an Update) plus the creation of the new pledge will be made very soon.
