SF (My Type of City) Completed Topographic Typography 5x7 Letterpress Prints
SF (My Type of City) Completed Topographic Typography 5x7 Letterpress Prints

Typography is to visual language as maps are to topography.

I am a pioneer in the land of topographic typography. I seek to shed light on typeface design, to generate insight, and to delight by setting my favorite cities in a face whose historical echoes and associations that harmonize with the forms they belong to. I paint by numbers, letter forms, and a palette of analphabetic symbols that have the same character, spirit and personality of each location (See San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge with example and description below).

Detail of SF GG Bridge and the infamous fog rolling in represented by per mille symbols.
Detail of SF GG Bridge and the infamous fog rolling in represented by per mille symbols.

Overlaying Broadway, a typeface created by Morris Fuller Benton, was a popular font historically used and created at the same time the GG Bridge was designed in 1928, by Joseph B Strauss (completed in April 19th,1937).

Topography and typography are designed to convey a written message.

  • Topography: originated in ancient Greece as the description of a place (topos, "place" and graphia,"writing"). This meaning is less common in America where it is synonymous with relief and elevation contour drawings. (Wikipedia)
  • Typography: also originated in Greece (typos, "form" and graphia, "writing").

Historical Interlude.

Typographic history mirrors topography such that it is the study of the  relationships of human culture: politics, philosophy (structuralism, post-structuralism), architecture, and art movements (Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassical, Romanticism, Realism, Geometric Modernism, Lyrical Modernism and Post Modernism).

I believe Typography is architecture on a page; typefaces are buildings, leading floors, columns walls, tracking rooms, kerning furniture, letter forms bricks and the grid mortar.

Where does the money go?

Project Details:

I will create (My "Type" of City) Topographic Typography silkscreen prints for thirteen locations: Boston, Boulder, Chicago, Denver, London, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, New York, Sonoma County, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle and Sydney.

For example, I will depict iconic Chicago architecture and translate it into a  typeface called Eaglefeather based on the architectural writings of Chicago resident Frank Lloyd Wright.  I will sculpt the 500 w 18th street building, where Al Capone ran one of his prohibition era moonshine and brewery businesses, in the Art deco font ARB 44 Chicago Modern.

If funded, the project money will be used to pay for supplies and studio space.  I will conduct a survey for the most popular designs of each city and run them by hand on a letterpress. Each of these letterpress prints has to be cast on a magnesium plate that cost $100 for each 13x19 size.

Risks and challenges

As soon as this project is funded I will be up and running. I will have regular updates announcing finished locations that will allow you to receive your gift as soon as your city is completed.

I have already recently traveled to all the cities I plan to depict, experienced the culture and researched the typefaces that will represent the topography. I believe that each typeface is a culture.

This is the second generation of designs that I successfully received funding on KICKSTARTER two years ago. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/omarsandoval/meta-physics-city-and-hyper-local-art-letter-press. There are 10 San Francisco gifts for this project that you will receive by November of this year created from my previous successful KICKSTARTER.

Having put lots of thought and time on this concept I know that the future designs are going to be even more spectacular!

(My Type of City) Handmade 13x19 Signed Limited Edition San Francisco Golden Gate Park Letterpress Print. This design features Hotmetal Borders—A dingbat typeface consisting only 90 degree embellished corner pieces. This is my first natural landscape using this whimsical typeface. It was only fitting to vintage letterpress this design using a late 1930's Vandercook Press and a beautiful cotton Lettra letterpress paper. The design was made into a magnesium block, inked, then each piece is printed individually. Due to the printing process (which is done entirely by hand), there will be slight variations from print to print which make each and everyone unique. All materials are archival. Wide margins give you room to mat and frame to your liking.
