Our next album, White Horse, is going to be like nothing we've ever attempted. The music is coming together but we're not stopping there.
Because we love traditional bluegrass, we sing a lot of the songs written by Bill Monroe and the other pioneers of bluegrass: Ralph Stanley, Don Reno, Jimmy Martin, Earl Scruggs. We wanted to draw on the history of the place we're from the way they did when they wrote that classic bluegrass.
White Horse tells the life story of a fictional historical character, Charlie McCarver, who lived in early 20th century Washington State. It begins with his happiness in youth with wife Lisa-Ann and their children. When his marriage unravels and his family leaves him, the songs chronicle Charlie's psychological crack, descent into violence, and life on the run. The album closes with songs that explore Charlie's memories, regrets, and confrontation with aging and death. To further enrich the story and the character, we sent out over 20 packets to writers and artists who will contribute their work to a booklet that will accompany the album.
We think there's a lot of reasons to be excited about this concept - it unifies music with other art forms, and weaves it into a picture of Washington history. And as far as we can tell, nothing quite like it has ever been done in the bluegrass world before.
We need the help of our fans to get this project across the finish line. The project funds will be used to pay for:
- Final mixing and mastering of the music.
- Creation of the album artwork.
- Graphic design layout of the album art and the accompanying booklet of lyrics, stories, and art.
- Printing and production of the CD and booklet.
- Production of the t-shirt rewards! (Check out examples at: http://www.olymountainboys.com/img/ombshirts.jpg)
And with any funds we get above the goal, we hope to hire a promotional company to distribute the album to radio stations and press contacts, to make sure it gets heard widely by people who don't know about the Oly Mountain Boys... yet!
Risks and challenges
There are a lot of moving parts to this project! We have finished much of the recording process, but we're waiting for the artistic contributions to roll in. We need to have all those contributions in place before we can get going on graphic design layout. The timeline might slip a bit if artistic contributions come in late, or if graphic design and production take longer than expected.
We're not sure what it'll look like when it's all done. But we do know it's the most ambitious album we've attempted, and we're excited to make a musical and artistic product that we think will be truly unique.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
