I Am The Prize!

Hello, my name is Oliver and I'm a filmmaker.

www.oliverpurches.com

I make corporate films for money, and Comedy films for the love of it, and now I need to raise some money to make my first Comedy Feature Film.

I want to make a Comedy Film about Pick-Up Artistry because it's always struck me as a slightly ridiculous, and classically male thing to do. I think it's high time we all had a good laugh at this subject - together.

Pickup is a crystillisation of the battle of the sexes of our times. A film about Pick-Up Artistry can explore how guys and girls treat each other these days in general, and look at where the inequalities are between the sexes in a funny way.

Beyond that, I want to rock the world by producing an outstanding comedy film on a micro-budget, by using Pickup to explore love & relationships from a whole new perspective.

YOU Are The Prize!

But I'm not doing anything without YOUR help, your pledges, your shares, likes and follows. Please do follow me on Twitter, like our Facebook page, and get in touch via iamtheprizemovie@gmail.com  : )

Relevant Work!

I've made a few films about guy girl relations (see below), but I think the most relevant to this campaign is You Can Be My Wingman Anytime, which combines the idea of guys chatting up girls in bars with the (typically male) delusion that in doing so men can be as cool as fighter pilots...

The Story is the MOST Important Thing!

For the record, I Am The Prize is different from 'Hitch' in that it's about 'Pickup Artists' as opposed to a romantically inclined 'Date Doctor'... Likewise the subplot of 'Crazy Stupid Love' that shows Steve Carell becoming successful with women after dressing sharp and acting cool is fun, but only gave a surface-level explanation for a change from 'loser' to 'player'. I Am The Prize goes much deeper into how you can change to become more attractive to the opposite sex, and what happens to your mind, body and soul when you do...

I Am The Prize follows Martin - a hopelessly nice guy, as he ventures into the world of Pick Up Artistry. He does this because it's his only hope of of having a chance with Laura: the girl of his dreams...

Laura, the female lead, is a strong, independent woman. She's funny, self-assured, and doesn't take crap from anyone. That said, she's not just strong, she is slightly insecure in terms of relationships, which maybe explains why she seems to end up dating player jerk types... (btw, despite the quirky headwear in the storyboards, Laura is NOT a 'manic pixie dream girl'...)

Sebastian, the guru who teaches our protagonist Martin, is a left-brained genius / lunatic / sociopath. He's part mad-professor genius, part embittered geek who still hasn't forgiven womenkind for ignoring him when he was a teenager...

Sebastian has a small cohort of 'disciples', simple guys who don't seem to be improving RE women - more like Sebastian keeps them hanging around so he can keep milking them for money. These guys are sweet, harmless and naive: they are our comic relief...

And Laura has some friends who we'll get to know pretty well - we get an inside look not only at the friendship dynamics between them - both when in the company of men and otherwise, but also get to experience the whole dating dance from the female perspective through them.

Global Aspirations, Local Filmmaking!

I Am The Prize will be shot in Bristol, England. Bristol is famed for it's Natural History and Animation output, but has never been properly put on the map in terms of a successful fiction film before.  It also happens to be home to many incredibly talented potential cast & crew, who often have to  travel to London or Cardiff to work.

But this doesn't have to be the case!

We need more films made here: films that build on the popularity of short films such as our Wingman film. See below for our crew photo from the Wingman shoot, featuring myself, our super-talented actors and our awesome crew (who, all, incidentally, can be found on the ace crew listings site www.bristolcrew.co.uk. )

In addition, I also run -along with two filmmaker friends David Hawk and Rob Holder- the monthly filmmaker get-together night Bristol Filmmakers. New friends always welcome!

Building a Winning Team!

I will Direct and act in I Am The Prize, albeit with a Co-Director who will share Directorial responsibilities when I'm in front of the camera. This worked extremely well on the Wingman film (with David Hawk), and more recently The Mild Wild West (with Naomi Smith).

There is one Executive Producer attached so far: Stephen Follows, who, when not writing and producing award winning, incredibly popular viral films, also writes brilliant blog articles about different aspects of the UK film industry (see site for details).

I look forward to assigning a producer to the project (there are several interested) either during or soon after the campaign.

And as for the cast and crew - they will be brought on during pre-production ie after this campaign

Other Relevant Work

Being Cary Grant explores the softer side of Romantic self-improvement (albeit in a short snappy way).

And also: 'Girlfriend Performance Review' tells the story of a guy who actually thinks it's a good idea to give his girlfriends' Performance Reviews after 3 months of togetherness...

I'm excited!

Thank you for your time!

Oliver

Risks and challenges

There are several risks and challenges associated with a low budget feature film project, not least the constraints imposed by having a modest budget to work with. That said, I think less money forces more ingenuity to be used, and my experience making short films for very little money has told me that if you take sufficient time to carefully plan and organise your filmmaking, then incredible quality can be achieved without a large financial outlay. It's the old quick, fast, good triangle (pick two), we are lucky in having no external deadlines to work to, and although we will impose deadlines to make sure work is progressed efficiently, we will have independence to take our time on the things that will need a lot of time to make good.

Star in it yourself, or give that opportunity to someone else: it's up to you! : ) In order to get the most out of this prize it would be worth developing the story & choosing the song with a view to the new video becoming the most popular video version of the chosen song. Songs without good music videos, or without any music videos at all are ideal candidates. PLUS All the rewards above.
