---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Old Growth Ales crafts botanic and medicinal ales with organic, ethically traded or wild-harvested ingredients from the Cascadia bioregion. We use unique sugar sources in our ferments including cane, honey, seeds and fruit. These unique and traditional ales are adapted from old world recipes passed down from alchemists, brewers and herbalists. We carry on lineages creating seasonal health tonics, including ales, wines, ciders, meads and gruits.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fund this Project:

Help Old Growth Ales be commercially available. Until now, Old Growth Ales have only been available at private events. We have received overwhelming support from our community and need your help to move forward. There are significant startup costs associated with opening a brewery that a small, cooperatively-run business can not absorb. Thanks to the help from a small business development grant we have a beautiful one barrel stainless steel brew system. However, we need your help to purchase additional equipment and pay licensing fees.

With your help we can increase our output and generate enough sales to exceed our general operating costs. We need your help to make our product and services available to more than just a relatively small number of people at private events.

Our Product:

We craft botanic and medicinal ales with organic, ethically traded or wild-harvested ingredients from the Cascadia bioregion. Our ales highlight and revolve around the botanic ingredients.  Taste buds are dominated by the plant’s flavor and medicinal plant qualities are provided.  Old Growth Ales are not your typical beers which are grain based and mostly hops (a sedative with phyto-estrogenic constituents). There are some ales on the market which use botanic elements. However, the botanic elements are often just adjuncts, slight additions to the barley and hops which dominate their ale.

Stormy Day Dandelion Stout (6% ABV) This is likely the beer you have been missing: herbal coffee stout. A traditional all-grain barley, buckwheat, and oatmeal stout, magically made gluten-reduced* by the addition of a gluten precipitating enzyme. Infused with the rich, earthy, bitter chocolate coffee flavors of roasted chicory, dandelion, and cacao and finished with a touch of hops. Medicinal Uses: liver and kidney support, detoxification, full of antioxidants, mental clarity *10ppm, not suitable for celiacs, but fine for gluten-sensitive.

Cascadian Wine (9% ABV) wildharvested bioregional wine: oregon grape, elderberry, rosehip, grapes, millet and sorghum.

Cascadian Wine: Wildharvested Abundance of the Pacific Northwest

Mountain Gruit (6% ABV) What's a gruit? “Gruit ale stimulates the mind, creates euphoria, and enhances sexual drive” (Buhner). It is a traditional European ale, popular for at least 700 years before hops entered the scene, that uses alternative bittering herbs to hops. Moutain Gruit is a crisp and refreshing summer alpine wildflower ale. Fresh wildharvested yarrow, st john's wort, elderflower, and mugwort combine with sorghum to make for a bitter, sour, musky floral, light, yet heady, ale. Medicinal Uses: aphrodesiac, cold remedy, dream enhancer, digestive stimulant

Urtication Ale: Spring Tonic Nettle Beer
Urtication Ale: Spring Tonic Nettle Beer

Spice Brew “Melange” (8% ABV) Ginger, apples and lemons make this the best damn spice beer around! Strong, spicy and refreshing: tame a tiger, ride the worm, battle Harkonans, kick a cold, mellow the tummy, and feel the warm, heady euphoria envelop you. Medicinal Uses: digestive aid, promotes circulation, immune support

Charrow Ale (7% ABV) High mountain yarrow flowers with Willamette Valley tart cherries, sorghum and millet. Yarrow was the traditional bittering plant before hops. Known as “earth hop” and “meadowhops” throughout Scandanavia, it is antimicrobial and aromatic like the hops flower. Medicinal Uses: digestive tonic, antimicrobial to lungs, expands consciousness to higher realms.

Botanic and Medicinal Spritzers (Non-Alcoholic) Youngsters and adult friendly: mint lime spritzer, elderberry toddy, root beer or lemonbalm lemon.  Simple recipes mix well with our ales, spirits and on their own.

Our Budget:

The Budget required to meet our goal and make ales commercially available is $20,000.  This is the minimum capital needed to move forward with this business.  Here is the breakdown:

Even though we are only shooting for the minimum goal of $20,000 we have bigger goals in mind. If we are able to raise close to $100,000 Old Growth Ales will be able to expand brewing capacity and put our efforts into opening a tap house.

Our current system is great but not big enough. Help us purchase larger equipment and bring Old Growth Ales to you.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Timeline:

Once we reach our kickstarter goal, Old Growth Ales can pursue licensing and expects commercial availability in Summer/Fall 2015.  We are looking for the right location in Eugene/Springfield.  Expect to see us at: select tap houses in the Eugene/Springfield and Portland areas, farmers markets regional events and festivals.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

More on Our Product:

We use unique sugar sources to create our ales. This includes honey, fruit, cane, buckwheat, sorghum and millet. Its all gluten free; essentially we make:

Gruits: Grain based ferments with herbs, flowers, roots and barks used for flavoring and bittering agents. This includes, but in no way limited to hops.

Country wines: Wine made with fruits, flowers, herbs, roots or barks (not just grapes).

Meads: Honey based ferments with fruits, flowers, herbs, roots or barks.

Many of our ales are based on traditional recipes founded in herbalism and old-time healing practices when fermentation was used as a means to preserve and enhance the healing qualities of ingredients (fruits, flowers, herbs, roots, barks).

Our ales are produced with environmental and social justice as a guiding principle. For those ingredients available in our bioregion, we wildharvest or source from local producers with environmentally and socially sound practices.

We ethically wildharvest, which means we collect plant materials (fruits, flowers, herbs, roots or barks ) from natural areas in a sustainable manner. We tend to that 'plant stand' each year and use harvesting methods which encourage the perpetuation and health of the plant stand. We act as stewards.

Community, Collaborators & Colleagues: A special thanks to all the special people who have helped Old Growth Ales grow.  Your help bottling, harvesting, brewing, pressing juice, providing donations, playing music and sharing our story is appreciated.  Our gratitude in particular to a few businesses/people:  1Tree Productions, Anther and Sepal, Broken Banjo Photography, Moonshine Clan, Mel Luna, Jenn Pecenka, Brandon Lanius.

Risks and challenges

Conventional wisdom points to licensing. Similar projects discuss this risk and licensing a brewery is difficult. That said, our lawyer had licensing approval on a location two years ago, but determined it the wrong time. Now is the right time. We are in conversation with the federal licensing agency, the Tobacco Trade Bureau, to assure that our brewery site is suitable and will meet the licensing requirements. We have retained legal council to support this process through a small business legal clinic. We feel confident that the appropriate location will emerge and we can begin the licensing process this spring. We have two exciting locations we are currently considering. Hallelujah! The state licensing authority, the liquor control commission is on board with whatever the federal agency does.

Our business model is different than typical breweries because our goal is not to produce a large volume of product. Often breweries rely on an economy of scale - brew alot of beer to be financially sound. We don't want to do that. We focus on crafting superb products on a small scale - we do not over harvest our plant stands, nor ship products all over the country. Our business code of ethics is about supporting our local community, both people, plants and soil (environment). We need to balance this ethic with practical financial considerations in order to stay afloat and do business.
