The critically acclaimed graphic novel, OINK was first published in 1995. I spent 5 years working nights and weekends, digitally remastering my old book while working my full-time job to create this entirely new edition.
THANK YOU FOR A GREAT CAMPAIGN!
We will have a link up shortly for late backers! In the meantime you can pre-order the standard hardcover directly from our website, as well as prints, shirts, and original artwork!
OINK: Heaven's Butcher will be an 8"x12", 122-page, hardcover graphic novel. The KICKSTARTER EXCLUSIVE, slip-cased ICON EDITION of the book will feature a foil-stamped slipcase, and each ICON EDITION will also include a signed and numbered bookplate and an embossed, signed 8"x10" art print suitable for framing.
This is a truly special edition of OINK, it is the culmination of a 20-year project that I have invested my heart and soul into creating. OINK is all about pursuing your own path in life, no matter the obstacles. This is the edition that I had dreamed of making when it was first published over 20 years ago!
OINK could potentially be an ongoing series of graphic novels -- your support of this Kickstarter could determine the future of the story. I have two other arcs in the story, OINK: Blood & Circus which follows OINK after the events in Heaven's Butcher, and the conclusion, OINK: City of Loons. The story is a parallel of my own journey through life.
During our campaign our backers unlocked EVERY stretch goal we could think of!
"While I didn't catch OINK in the original inception, I can tell you that the book looks absolutely amazing, with some of the most horrific and beautiful artwork I've ever seen in a book." ~Rock! Shock! Pop!
"Every page is a gritty and dark masterpiece worth framing in its own right. It’s nothing short of beautiful." ~Giant Fire Breathing Robot
"Mueller paints a grim world in the pages of Oink, and his story is one that lingers and squirms in the reader’s mind long after the book is finished." ~Geeks of Doom
OINK: Heaven's Butcher is the story of OINK, a member of a genetically engineered class of slaves. He is imprisoned in a city called Heaven, that is run by religious zealots that are hell-bent on maintaining control over his kind, while also hiding a dark truth about the nature of their creation. After witnessing the brutal execution of his mentor, OINK escapes and begins an epic journey of self-discovery in a world of science and religion gone mad.
Just beneath the narrative is my own life story. I am the lucky pig who fell off the truck, ran for the fences and escaped the slaughterhouse of modern life, and it all very nearly didn't happen. The allegory in OINK: Heaven's Butcher is my testimonial and indictment of the public education system, which by design marginalizes the many while elevating the few.
People often equate OINK to Orwell's Animal Farm, and it's a very adequate comparison that I'm happy to accept. Orwell gave me a tremendous gift when I was 13 and really struggling. His books Animal Farm and 1984 taught me to question authority, and when I did that I saw the world in a new way. I realized I was a small cog in a giant machine, a terrible and awful machine.
I have the optimistic view that we all have gifts, and that the 12 years we are given toward education should be spent nurturing young minds to help identify and develop those gifts, so that young people can enter the world equipped and enthusiastic about how they will contribute to it. OINK is a hero for the ignorant masses...and I am one.
The remastering process was a journey in itself, as graphic novels are epic projects! When I originally worked on the book in 1993, it took me 2 years to complete. I started working on the remastering process in 2010. This edition took 5 years of my nights and weekends while I continued working a full time job. The REMASTERING process involved essentially repainting, composing, drawing, coloring, and lettering nearly every panel in the story. I was 23 when I originally created most of the art and now over 20 years have passed since I published my first book. In that time, I have learned quite a bit about storytelling and image making. Here are some of the before and afters.
KICKSTARTER has been a revolution for Graphic Novels and independent creators like me. There is just no better platform to reach a large audience and build a sustainable community around our projects that is based on quality and most importantly your satisfaction. We are a small business and it's currently impossible for us to finance new projects without knowing if there is support for them. Kickstarter allows us to pre-sell our projects to finance them, as well as build a community around these products. Our success on KICKSTARTER could mean completing the trilogy I had always planned with OINK.
BIG PIG INK, LLC was founded in 2014 by John & Heather Mueller. We created BIG PIG INK with the belief that people of all walks of life are at their best when they are truly independent. This means we steer the ship of our own little empire (be it ever so humble). Our goal is simple: to build a sustainable business making the art and products that we love and want to share with the world.
John Mueller is an award-winning author, illustrator, and game developer. He is the creator of the graphic novel OINK, and one of the minds behind the video game SKYSHINE's BEDLAM that funded on Kickstarter in 2014. He has been a contributor to numerous AAA franchises, from his early days at Black Isle and Ritual Entertainment, to contributing to franchises like Gears of War, Unreal Tournament, and the Darksiders franchise. He likes making cool stuff and plans to do that until his hands and his brain are no longer responsive.
The amazing music track for our video was created by the masterful Kevin Riepl. I was so excited when I heard it, he nailed the vibe so perfectly. You can listen to more of Kevin's amazing music at his website.
I am so thankful to the publishers who have licensed and created different editions of this book! PLEASE support them; they are truly standing behind and supporting independent creators!
**For FRENCH or GERMAN readers please go support DELERIUM for FRENCH and Splitters for GERMAN editions. These editions are amazing and they inspired me to create this large-format, English language hardcover.
You can also support your local comic shop if you would like to purchase the Trade Paperback from Dark Horse Comics.
Risks and challenges
Everything about the book from a creation standpoint is completed, and the risks are very low. I have a great printer to help me with the books, and some of the physical goods have already been created. My wife and I have a lot of experience fulfilling goods, so overall the risks and challenges are very low. However, there is always a possibility that that we could encounter production issues that could delay the book. If that occurs, we will provide updates on the status.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
