About this project

About the Book
2017 marks the 15th anniversary of Open House New York Weekend, an architecture and design festival that takes place in New York City every October. During OHNY Weekend, hundreds of the city's most architecturally and culturally significant buildings–many of which are not typically accessible to the public–open their doors for tours and talks by architects, designers, preservationists, city officials, and others. With more than 85,000 people visiting 275 sites, OHNY Weekend is a citywide celebration of New York and one of the city's most treasured cultural events.

An important part of each year's festival is a photo competition that invites OHNY Weekend visitors to submit their best photographs of the buildings and sites that they visited during the Weekend. Because OHNY Weekend takes place across all five boroughs; because the festival opens a diverse mix of sites, from infrastructure facilities to cultural spaces to workspaces and private homes; and because of the sheer number of submissions, the collection of photos offers a view of New York City that is unique in its breadth. It is a portrait of the greatest city in the world as seen by the people who love it the most.

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of OHNY Weekend, Open House New York–the non-profit that organizes the festival–will  publish a book of the best photographs from the annual photo competition. The book will feature a minimum of one hundred full color images, taken by a diverse group of amateur and professional photographers. It will be designed by PS New York, a creative agency that has designed many art and architecture books and oversees all of Open House New York's graphics.

Risks and challenges

Every book project risks the possibility of production delays, especially one featuring hundreds of photographs. But the Open House New York team has worked on many book and print projects, and can also rely on advice and guidance from many friends in the publishing world. If we meet our funding goal, we feel confident that we can deliver this project.

In terms of timing, we are aiming for late spring 2018, because we will be including photographs taken during the 2017 Open House New York Weekend. Those photos will be juried and selected in fall, with production of the book beginning in early 2018 for spring publication.
