Over 100 pages of ALL NEW sci-fi/fantasy stories in a deluxe, oversized hardcover format!
The HEK TREASURY is an over-sized deluxe collection of all new epic, science fiction, fantasy and genre short stories. The HEK Treasury will showcase each creator as they unleash new ideas, using experimental art, formatting, and storytelling techniques.
The HEK Treasury will be presented in a large prestige format hardcover (8 ¾ x 11 5/8 )* and offer readers an immersive experience, featuring full color art, a tri-fold narrative poster and host of secret format and narrative shenanigans.
The Kickstarter exclusive version of the book will be hardcover bound in black cloth with a gold-foil custom piece of art and a few unique surprises that will only appear in this edition. It will also be signed and numbered by the artists.
Matt Kindt's contribution to The HEK Treasury is “The Great Mech Wars,” three interconnecting 10-page chapters presenting a tale of an old, sad war-mech operated by a veteran on fire-watch duty which connects to a murderous psycho, two bounty hunters, and a family on the run.
Marie’s Enger’s stories for the The HEK Treasury share a dystopian theme of bleak, fantastical, ruined worlds and great despair — leading to new, dangerous, beginnings. From death cults to telepathy, her stories push the outer limits of storytelling.
Brian Hurtt’s feature story will delve into a future shaped by the excesses of genetic manipulation and mad science. It will include an illustrated primer of this future world, as well as a 16-page story following a war-weary mutate and her alliance with the human forces that do not trust her. Welcome to an epic world of hybrid, weaponized flora and fauna, sci-fi body horror and biological monstrosities.
What if Heavy Metal, The Twilight Zone, and McSweeney’s made a baby?
We want to do something BIG. Something original in both format and story in an oversized sci-fi fantasy European album formatted book. This will allow us to use bigger pages and to play with the panel layouts in new ways that a traditionally sized comic can't. Also the expectations of a large prestige style book are greater so it’s a chance to really blow out the art and do something really special. We are pouring everything we have into these large pages!
What is HEK Studio?
Last summer, HEK Studios (Matt, Brian, and Marie) purchased a vintage Route 66 garage (circa 1953). They’ve been working on converting it into the first full-time independent comic book studio in St. Louis.
In addition to publishing through Kickstarter, HEK Studio is creating a shared creative space for visiting writers and artists and will eventually host boutique comic book creation workshops that will be open to the public and make available our combined 45 years of experience in the industry,
A successful kickstarter will bring us one step closer to opening our studio doors and growing the comic book community and industry.
The deluxe over-sized prestige format hardcover (8 ¾ x 11 5/8 )*. The cover will be 4-color, matte finish with embossing and spot varnish. Inside it will feature full color art, a tri-fold narrative poster and host of secret format and narrative shenanigans. Starting at 100 pages minimum -- we hope to blow by our stretch goals and get this book over 150 pages!
The deluxe version of the book will be the same interiors as the retail edition -- with one big difference! It will be a hardcover bound in black cloth with a new piece of art -- gold-foil pressed into the cover along with a few other unique surprises. This edition will also be signed and numbered by all three artists. This edition will ONLY be available on Kickstarter.

Matt's 30-plus pages will feature short self-contained stories that also interconnect into a larger narrative. These stories will also connect to many of the stretch-goals and add-ons, including the paper-craft robot/mech to tell even more story and flesh out the characters. Each of the stories follows a different character and shows the impact of the "mech wars" and their aftermath.
The first story follows a veteran of the mech wars who is stationed in the mountains on firewatch duty. The problem? It's been raining for weeks and he's left alone in a mech full of the ghosts of his lost comrades.
The second story follows a family on the run and displaced after the "mech wars." They have reclaimed an old mech and our currently using it as a mobile home -- but finding a place to settle down in a mobile killing-machine is proving to be harder than they thought. Pushed to the brink, they're going to have to do some things they might regret, in hopes of reaching the promised land of a mech-garden-of-eden that may or may not exist.
The third story tells the tale of a serial-killer with prosthetic robot legs and the two bounty hunters who are tracking him down. This chase will span the globe from a recently-seceded West Coast to the deep waters of the Mediterranean, rich with treasure ready to be reclaimed by war-mechs re-purposed for deep-sea exploration.
Matt's fourth tale will be a collaboration with Marie Enger on art that tells the story of a futuristic tale of an automaton (robot) living in the aftermath of the "EMP wars" who is staying alive by converting the blood of humans into usable electrical energy.
Brian feature story, "Biologic", will delve into a future shaped by the excesses of genetic manipulation and mad science. It will include an illustrated primer of this future world, as well as a 16-page story following a war-weary mutate and her alliance with human forces that do not trust her. Welcome to an epic world of hybrid, weaponized flora and fauna, sci-fi body horror and biological monstrosities.
Another story by Brian, "Letter to Red Tiger", will tell the tale of a city's protector--a child-like robot--and his love for his arch enemy, the pschokinetic terrorist, Red Tiger.
Along with other shorter works, Brian will also be illustrating a story by Marie with Matt providing watercolors.
Marie’s three stories may not share a setting, but they share a theme of bleak, fantastical, ruined worlds and great despair leading to new, dangerous, beginnings.
Her first story will detail the fall of bog dredgers in an isolated camp dealing with the aftermath a catastrophic dam collapse, the ostracization of one of its weakest members, and the rise of the Crom Cruach death cult.
The second will focus on LOAM, the Wrapped Madman of the Northern Hill, a character from the hit dark occult western TTRPG game, Casket Land.
In the third story, an isolated lunar miner pulls up something dark from beneath the surface - something that would allow all of humanity to communicate telepathically, but at a great future cost. The miner must face whether or not they should improve society now so that it might fall into ruin later, while trying to survive what’s been pulled up from below.
Marie's fourth tale will be a collaboration with Matt on story that tells the story of a futuristic tale of an automaton (robot) living in the aftermath of the "EMP wars" who is staying alive by converting the blood of humans into usable electrical energy.
We want to tell stories and make art. Many of these stretch goals will add some great design elements but the meat of these stretch goals is CONTENT. We want to add story and pages and art. That's our real goal here. We want this book to be THICK with story pages. The more we stretch -- the more pages we will be able to afford to make and print. More pages! Same price! Share it with your friends. Ask your retailer to carry it! Help us get the word out.
SHIPPING WILL BE CHARGED AFTER THE CAMPAIGN ENDS.
All shipping fees will be charged AFTER the campaign ends, just before we ship the books. By doing it this way we can ensure you are paying the lowest possible cost for shipping.
Final surveys will be sent to each Backer requesting their address and calculating an accurate shipping charge. We're going to do everything we can to keep these rates as low as possible!
In order to make things a little easier, we'll be sending you your very own BACKERKIT account so we can both manage add-ons, surveys, address changes, and fulfillment.
Risks and challenges
Every kickstarter comes with risks. This isn't a store. You are a patron. You are helping artists to realize a creative goal that couldn't be achieved without your involvement. That said, there is a shared risk. Sickness, floods, fire. There could be delays due to unforeseen circumstances. BUT -- Matt has been doing pre-press and design and working with printers for over twenty years professionally. We are working with a trusted printer that has worked with us in the past. And we have all successfully fulfilled multiple kickstarters in the past.
All we can do is promise that if this kickstarter gets funded you will get what’s coming your way as fast as we can get it to you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
