About this project
Instead of trying to explain what this book/app is going to be like, I would love for you to experience it first hand. So, I created a demo that you will be able to try without having to download an actual app right now. Just click the image below and once you're there, please give it a moment to fully load. This way you can avoid some camera clunkiness. Once fully loaded, it should run smoothly for you.
Simply touch or click anywhere on the left area of the window and move towards your right. Now, you'll be able to read the story at your own pace. You can even go in reverse if you wanted to. The demo will run on your computer, tablet, and even your phone. But if you have all three, definitely give the tablet or phone version a try. There's just something about sitting on your couch and controlling the pace of the camera with your finger.
Quick note: If you are viewing with a Surface tablet, I found that you need to use the pen/stylus to make it move properly.
I hope you like it. Please enjoy and come back to this page to check out the rewards and more of the artwork.
I hope you enjoyed the demo.
So, to give you a brief summary of the story, OF OUR OWN DEVICE is set in a world much like ours, but imagine it with the Gods of Old, living among us. Mankind is much more evolved technologically speaking. Humans have done what they can to compete and survive amongst the gods. In some aspects, they have leveled the playing field with their advances in science and have equipped their law enforcement agents with high tech armor which makes them as powerful as some of the old gods.
The story revolves around a close group of friends, with two of them being brothers. They've recently discovered they have some godly sort of powers and don't know why or how they got them. And now it seems they are being watched from both sides.
I don't want to give too much away but the book is heavily influenced by Akira, Game of Thrones, and Chronicles, with a bit of Ninja Scroll as well. Oh, and pretty much every comic book I've read during my adolescence and on up til' now.
Plans for OF OUR OWN DEVICE
Now as for plans for the project, I would like for there to be several versions. The versions would include an app version similar to the light demo, a printed version, and a digital version of the printed book. The initial goal would allow me to do all of these. It would allow me to cover the cost of printing and hire some help to finish the app.
If there is a huge interest in this project, I would love to implement the content into a real-time game engine like Unreal 4 or Unity. This would still be a comic and not a game. But it will allow me to add more features. For example, I could add more camera control, so you could look around while the camera is traveling along it's set track, and other extra features like special effects--- maybe smoke, fog, or fluids. But never losing focus on keeping what made comics so great for me. I want to sit down and enjoy the story and read it at my own pace. And if I could stop in the middle of it and just look around the scene that would be pretty awesome too!
And lastly, after I consult with you guys, the backers, I would like to create a Virtual Reality version of the book. With today's advancements, VR is literally right around the corner and I think it would be really cool if we made a VR version of this. This would require a little more resources and would be a stretch goal but it could definitely be done.
Let's create one together!
So, as I am working on my project, I would love to see you guys create one as well! Although I have been working with 3D software for several years, that doesn't mean a hobbyist could not produce one of these on their own. There are free programs out there that will allow you to build 3D environments and characters. Not the best at sculpting? Or anatomy? Well, there are free programs out there that can help you with that. The OF OUR OWN DEVICE Art Book will also have a section where I will explain the whole process of making the app. I will list the software that I used and also alternative free software which is available to everyone. I'll walk you through each step and set up a reference guide of sorts. So, if you were interested in doing one yourself, you will already have the whole process laid out for you. The OF OUR OWN DEVICE Art Book will also come with a DVD full of extras like time-lapsed videos demonstrating digital sculpting and 3D modeling, with useful tips and tricks. I'll also add sample files of some of the models that I have created for the book/app. Hopefully, stuff that might make you want to jump in and give it a try.
As a kid, I used to love having sleepovers, where me and my friends would stay up all night drawing characters from our favorite comics or coming up with our own. It was fun just drawing together, creating cool stuff, and seeing what we'd come up with!
This could be kinda like that! Well kinda... It's in the same ballpark. ...But seriously, I'll have a blog setup as well. So, if you decide to start one you'll have a place to get feedback. I would love to see what you guys come up with.
Risks and challenges
What's really cool about this project is that aside from the printing of the books, there really are no other risk factors beside me having time to complete the project. Once the project is funded and if it exceeds the goal, anything over that goal will allow me to bring on more help to create additional content.
The plan for this whole project is to also be as transparent as possible. There will be weekly updates on how the project is going, so you know exactly when to expect your rewards and see some of the process that goes on to create them as well. I would like this to feel like a journey we take together, both me and everyone that supports this project.
