OF TWO MINDS is a feature documentary that reveals the extraordinary lives, struggles and successes of a few of the over 5 million Americans living with bipolar disorder. The film explores what it really feels like to be bipolar - from the raging highs of mania to the depths of despair and depression. Far from a clinical study of mental health issues, this film is a vibrant canvas of emotions ranging from painful to painfully funny, as we experience three years in the lives of our unique characters from across America.
We’ve found while making the film that just about everyone has a connection to this issue - whether it’s our parents, brothers and sisters, children, lovers, friends...or ourselves. With this film, we are reaching out with intimate stories of people who live with bipolar every day. We strongly believe that by putting a human face on this issue we can work toward reducing the stigma that has plagued the understanding of mental illness for so long.
WHY WE’RE DOING THIS
Our passion to make this film traces back to co-director Lisa Klein’s sister Tina, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in the late 1980s. She struggled with the shame and discrimination that accompanied her diagnosis and ultimately felt both defined by, and erased by, her illness. Tina died in 1994, and although her suffering was as real as that of any patient fighting a chronic illness, the understanding and compassion for this condition remain an uphill battle. We are making this film in her honor, in the hope that many will feel both empowered and less alone in dealing with bipolar after watching.
OF TWO MINDS also honors the memory of our dedicated producer and friend Kristin Chambers, who lost her long battle with cancer this past summer as we were working on the film. Her warmth, humor and passion continues to inspire us, and your donation will honor her memory as well. If you would like to honor someone you know who has lived with bipolar, all donations above $200 will include a "in support of" credit in the film's titles.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
JOIN US! We started work on OF TWO MINDS in 2008, and have met so many amazing, courageous and creative people in the process...now we are nearly finished, and we need your help. The film has been entirely a labor of love, and we are faced with the major costs of finalizing the film...music, post production, finishing costs and much more...to prepare it for upcoming festivals and eventual nationwide venues including theatrical and television. We are incredibly proud of this film, and so excited for its potential to reach everyone, especially those who need to know that they are not alone. Please join us with a donation today to make this dream possible!
ABOUT THE KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN
This is a grassroots campaign using the Kickstarter model...where everyone can be a part of the film! PLEASE tell your friends, family, co-workers and anyone you think would be interested in the subject, and in helping reach out with the film - put a link to this page on Facebook, Tweet to your followers, send an email. ALL DONATIONS HELP, and remember, if we don't make our goal...we don't get ANYTHING!
We've previously been involved in hit theatrical documentaries including WORDPLAY, IOUSA, FREAKONOMICS, THESE AMAZING SHADOWS, SUPERHEROES, and now, co-director Doug Blush has just had a new premiere at Sundance 2012 with THE INVISIBLE WAR, which he edited and associated produced with legendary documentary director Kirby Dick. UPDATE: We won the Audience Award for Best Documentary there!
