A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

Firebiner: Your everyday-carry survival carabiner.
We all love a good carabiner. We use them to clip our keys, our camera, our water bottle, or a myriad of other products to our backpacks, to shelves, to fences, to belt loops or to whatever we need at the moment. You want your carabiner to be strong, lightweight and maybe have some other functionality like a bottle opener.
We agree. The Firebiner is all that PLUS it has the ability to make fire easily with our patent-pending EverSpark technology. It has a titanium-coated stainless steel body construction rated for up to 50 pounds of gear (not for climbing or hanging anything with a beating heart). And, don't forget the small utility blade. We even designed in a screwdriver tip for the next round of prototypes.
The right design and the right material
Very strong stainless steel construction with up to 50 lbs capacity (we will keep you updated with final testing)
Extremely durable titanium coating
Lightweight, only 1 oz
EverSpark spark wheel technology to help start fires easily
Replaceable ferro rod, with extra rods
Utility/safety blade to easily cut paracord, fishing line, string and much more - stainless steel, replaceable
Bottle opener, for refreshment time
Hang slots to connect keys or anything else with an appropriate ring or clasp
Strong, thin, stainless steel wire gate that stays closed but is easy to open when needed
Screw-driver tip to be added on next round of prototypes
3 colors: Black, Gold & Blue
The Firebiner is not a toy. Keep out of reach of small children.
The Firebiner isn't just for survival; It's for every day use. See 9 fires created in under 1 minute. We are Outdoor Element, but you have our permission to go indoors as well. The Firebiner helps create fire, so be careful and responsible (you can thank our lawyers for that one). Check it out:
Since many of you asked if this would cut through a seatbelt, Mike decided to have a little fun. Yes, it does. Check out this video:
The Firebiner in action, with our custom USA-made paracord that is included in the Triple Threat Gift Pack: The OE Lite Survival cord has 7 strands of nylon for 550 pounds of tensile strength, one strand of 10 pound monofilament fishing line, and one strand of jute for fire tinder.
Look for future reviews (as we get more samples) on these great sites and more:
Outdoor Retailer Show 2016
We were able to show the Firebiner to several people at the latest Outdoor Retailer Show in SLC, UT in August. We went straight to companies whose product we love. Here are some of the comments we heard, and pictures to boot.
Don't be fooled by cheap knock-off paracord bracelets. The Kodiak has the following features compared to other knock-off varieties:
Custom-made-in-USA survival paracord which contains braided fishing line, tinder and nylon strands inside the paracord.
#8 Bait fish hook braided in the bracelet
Much more durable buckle made from Delrin, a high-strength POM plastic.
Thicker, more durable ferro rod that will last a lot longer.
Shiny striker plate that doubles as a reflector.
If you don't have the yellow label at the center of the paracord, then it is not the real deal. Choose quality. Choose The Kodiak.
Accessory Kit ($100k Stretch Goal)
The Accessory Kit was unveiled the last day when we met our $100k stretch goal. It contains the Vial which was unlocked at our $74k stretch goal and will be added on free for anyone pledging for at least 3 Firebiners. So, here is what is included in the Accessory Kit:
1 Reflector/Screwdriver Tool
3 Tinder Quik fire-starters
The Vial color will be chosen by backers via a survey a little later. The Reflector has a small Screwdriver tip to make replacing the ferro rod easy and convenient. The Tinder Quiks are one of our favorite fire starters that we wanted to include and share. One Tinder Quik can fit inside the vial, along with two replacement ferro rods. Check out this picture to give you an idea of what we are talking about:
Bonus: Hand-made Custom Wood Pen
Mike, the inventor, likes to dabble. His latest hobby is turning beetle-kill pine on his lathe into wood pens. He uses high-quality genuine Parker inserts for the ink refill cartridges. Each pen is unique and made with love. We'll have your name etched into your custom OE pen as a thank you for supporting our Project and our Dream. Get one of these treasures along with your Firebiner. Help us recycle these beetle-kill pines into something eye-catching and functional. Here are some of his latest examples.
at $30,000 we will introduce a new color option (Silver)
at $45,000 we will introduce a new color option (Red/Blue Metallic)
at $75,000 we will introduce a vial which can hold wet or dry fire starter, or whatever else you decide to put in there. Anyone who has pledged for 3 or more Firebiners will automatically get a free vial.
at $100,000 we will introduce an Accessory Kit which includes a Vial, a Reflector/Screwdriver Tool, and 3 Tinder Quiks. These can be added on to your pledge. Due to us finding lower international shipping rates, all pledges with international shipping charges will get a free Accessory Kit

“Great product idea. I just upped my pledge so I get the paracord as well. :)” Steve
“no doubt this will get funded. Good luck.” S
“If this turns out to be half as awesome as the Kodiak, it'll be money well spent. I fly in the backseat of the FA-18F for the US Navy, and every time I do, I wear the Kodiak. I have full confidence that if something ever happened and I found myself in a survival scenario, I'd be well-prepared no matter the
environment I might find myself in. Thanks guys. Looking forward to the firebiner!” EH
“Thank you for this awesome piece for my EDC kit!” Tim
“Can't wait to get my hands on it.” Chris
“Looking forward to seeing the finished item. Still wearing my Kodiak daily so this will be a nice addition.” Stephen

“The thing looks awesome, such a simple concept and well executed.” Schaeffer
Risks and challenges
Our biggest risk is manufacturing delays. Development is just about done. We are waiting on next & final round of prototypes, but will authorize the purchase of steel for the molds as soon as we get fully funded to help reduce the time. We have a strong relationship with the factory and they are fantastic.
We will be transparent and communicate our progress, and our delays. In light of our experience, we lean towards under promising and over delivering, so our hope is to ship earlier in February rather than later. Either way, we will keep you in the loop and informed on a regular basis. With Mike's awesome design talent and Joe's extensive consumer product development experience, we are in good shape.
