Where Truth is Hid - Odd's Bodkins 2018-2019
Odd's Bodkins Shakespeare Ensemble is an emerging Shakespeare company based in Chicago, IL. We are about to embark on our third season, containing productions of Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Love's Labors Lost, Twelfth Night, and a Renaissance-Style production of The Comedy of Errors.
Our theme for the 2018-2019 season, "Where Truth is Hid," highlights how quickly and profoundly truth and reality can get skewed, buried, or confused. It also reminds us of the fact that, even if the truth does become hidden, it can always be found again if you're willing to look for it.
Through these performances, Odd's Bodkins aims to take familiar plays and present them in ways that are unexpected and impactful. Imagine a Macbeth set in our modern political climate, or a Julius Caesar that confronts the problems and power struggles that accompany nationalism. Or imagine a romantic comedy where the women call all the shots (that's Love's Labors Lost for you). Every show in this upcoming season has a statement to make, ranging from unabashed social commentary, to reminders that the antidote to darkness is often as simple as love and joy in the face of adversity.
Odd's Bodkins is also committed to unconventional casting, and often features women playing roles originally intended for men, and vice-versa. Attention is also paid to marginalized groups, with a focus on inclusion for actors of color and members of the LGBT+ community. We also encourage the development and careers of female directors, (still a surprising rarity in the world of classical theatre,) with four out of our five upcoming productions placing a woman at the helm.
Your support of this project will help these productions reach their full potential. The funds raised here will purchase quality performance spaces, intricate props, period costumes, and realistic stage weaponry, among other needs. Your help will ensure top-notch performances of classic stories presented in new ways.
Odd's Bodkins Shakespeare Ensemble is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

Risks and challenges
The risks of this project are twofold: the first is simply budgeting. As a young, not-for-profit company, making ends meet while still producing quality work is a delicate balancing act. Outside funding or no outside funding, this season will go forward, but in order to truly present these plays in the way they deserve to be presented, we need your help.
The second risk is the boldness of the statements we intend to make with the productions in the coming season. Our directors are taking bold stances that comment on our lives, our society, and humanity as a whole. Art that has something to say invariably draws criticism, but art that refuses to say anything at all has forgotten its purpose. At Odd's Bodkins, we believe in the power of art to affect real change by affecting people, and we will not back away from truths that deserve to be expressed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
