The Shared Dream is a 1-4 player cooperative board game set in the world of ODAM Publishing's tabletop RPG Of Dreams And Magic. It sees a group of characters wake up from the exact same terrible dream, only to discover it's coming to life in the real world.
Each time the game is played, a Shared Dream scenario is chosen, with each one providing a different set of objectives, enemy mechanics, and unique Nemesis. Each scenario also contains its own set of Personal Reflections, mini-stories each character must progress through in order to contribute to a victory.
With 5 scenarios to choose from, 10 unique playable characters, and a modular city that changes with every playthrough, The Shared Dream combines the strategy and replayability of a board game with the mood, theme, and storyline of a RPG.
Combining the storytelling of an RPG with the strategy of a board game, The Shared Dream contains 2 main mechanics that push the game forward.
First is the Personal Reflection deck. At the beginning of each game, every player randomly chooses a Personal Reflection deck that is tied to the specific scenario they have chosen to play. This Personal Reflection deck tells the story of that individual's part of the Shared Dream, and their efforts to combat it in the Waking World. Each Personal Reflection deck sees players travel throughout the city, speak with its denizens, and face challenges and obstacles as they work towards completing their part of The Shared Dream.
The second is personal resource management. Every player can only take 3 actions per turn, so they must carefully consider how they are going to best spend their time. Do they rush through their Personal Reflection, helping to reach the final conflict as soon as possible? Do they carefully manage their resources to help slow the tide of enemies? Or do they go all out and defeat everything they can, despite the risks?
In addition to their actions, the main resource players use is Conviction. Conviction is used to channel their dream identities, helping them grow temporarily stronger, gain access to special powers, and defeat their enemies. Unfortunately, every time Conviction is spent, a character's Nightmare track is increased. At the end of every turn, players must roll a Nightmare check that grows harder the more Nightmare they have.
Once this Nightmare check is failed, that player spawns a new enemy whose strength is dictated by the amount of Nightmare the player has. In this way, players must always consider when and how to use their Conviction. While spending 3 Conviction to channel at full power may be helpful now, it will inevitably have consequences down the line.
Do I stand and fight, or do I cut and run? If I spend 2 Conviction now, will that just mean a Reaver will be breathing down our necks next turn? But if I don't, will we even survive the night?
These tough decisions, combined with the specific challenges scenarios bring, are the core of The Shared Dream's play experience.

Covens, The Shared Dream’s first big-box expansion, allows players to experience the world of The Shared Dream in new ways, providing both backwards compatible and new standalone content. Covens will contain:
- 2 brand-new interconnected cooperative scenarios
- 2 New, Backwards-Compatible Mechanics: The Phantom House and Covens
- Solo Campaign Mode
- 4 New Playable Characters
- Kickstarter Exclusive Achievement Sticker Sheet!
New Cooperative Scenarios
Scenario 1: Human Sacrifice
Rumors are swirling through the city of a mysterious house appearing at a new location every night. Full of wonder and terror, the house has attracted the attention of local Anima, who are banding together to find and clear it of whatever evil lurks inside, claiming it and its magical properties for themselves. To succeed, players will have to learn new ways to work together and create magic beyond the capability of any individual Anima.
Scenario 2: Late Arrival
Although the Phantom House is now under the Animas’ control, there’s no time to rest! No sooner has the house been claimed by the forces of good than an Anima arrives at its doorstep, claiming to be the house’s original owner. But is this strange visitor a victim of the Phantom’s haunting, or the perpetrator? In Late Arrival, players will learn that not all Anima have the same goals, or even fight for the same side.
New Backwards-Compatible Mechanics
The Phantom House
The Phantom House is a new piece that is randomly placed and moved in the city throughout play. Players may visit the Phantom House to receive its benefits, and enemies may attack the Phantom House to indirectly hinder the players in return.
The namesake of the big-box expansion, Covens are groups of Anima who come together for a shared purpose. Each Coven has its own passive benefit and drawback, allowing players to further customize their gameplay experience.
Players can choose to spend Conviction and place it on the Coven Card, allowing other players to take this Conviction for themselves when necessary, offering new strategic options.
Allowing a Coven to stockpile enough Conviction will also give players access to powerful Rituals, magical abilities that have board-wide and potentially game-changing effects.
New Solo Campaign
In the Crux Collection, you learned more about the characters of The Shared Dream by living their stories. Now it’s your turn to tell your own. What would you do if you woke up and discovered you could make your dreams real? Would you use your new-found powers for good, or personal gain? And perhaps most importantly, will you live or die when plunged into a world of dreams and magic?
Covens’ solo campaign features a custom “You” character built by the player’s choices. Mix and match multiple Waking World statistics, Animus passive abilities, and Animus active abilities to create a character all your own. This character customization, combined with multiple story choices and endings, grants the solo campaign great replayability paired with our deepest storytelling yet!

Kickstarter Exclusive Phantom House Achievement Sticker Sheet
Celebrate your victories and mark your achievements using this sticker sheet! Complete previous Shared Dream scenarios with specific results to adorn your base of operations with trophies to commemorate your success. This achievement sheet offers a fun way to track your adventures in The Shared Dream, while providing new goals to strive for when replaying scenarios.
While stretch goals can be fun for backers and often add value to a project, we don't feel that they're appropriate for this campaign.
In our first campaign, we were able to add 4 playable characters and an additional scenario to The Shared Dream as stretch goals. Those stretch goals are included in the reprint, and we felt that 10 playable characters with 5 different scenarios is a good place for the base game to be and trying to add anything else would be, well, a stretch. (Excuse the pun.)
As far as component upgrades, when we planned this reprint Kickstarter, we already knew what components we wanted to change or upgrade. We want this reprint to be the best version of The Shared Dream there can be, which means we are going to ensure all of the components are of top quality rather than spreading incremental upgrades across multiple stretch goals.

Risks and challenges
Since this is a reprint, many of the usual risks of a board game project have been somewhat mitigated. We will be using the same manufacturer and many of the same shipping partners, allowing us to repeat the success of The Shared Dream's previous campaign.
Adding new material to an existing game does create a unique challenge, which is why we decided to set a later estimated ship date than we would for a strict reprint. This additional time will ensure that all of the new content is fully integrated with the reprint.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
