About this project
This game was formerly known as Battle of the Bands, but due to a naming conflict we have changed it to Band Manager: Backstage Clash. Please excuse any remaining references to the previous name!
Band Manager: Backstage Clash is a lively and ruthless game that uses band merchandise as the board and pieces.
Starting with nothing but pure passion, players go on tours to win career opportunities and fans. However, tours are expensive and risky. The risk may be shared by cooperating with others, but then players must split the spoils, so band members must earn their place or be left out.
Early in players’ career, tours are niche; poorly promoted with obscure genres & unusual instruments (bagpipe salsa?). As the game progresses, players gain success by selling out to more mainstream music and learning how to do effective marketing. As their careers take off, the incentive to cooperate with other players fades away, leaving nothing but a desperate race for fans.
The game is for three to five players and lasts around 45 minutes. It's suitable for families, quick to learn but complex enough for serious gamers, features over 100 unique 8bit pixel art illustrations...
... and yes, the game board is a t-shirt.
Why a t-shirt?
- T-shirts are the most iconic of all band merchandise.
- It makes the cards easier to pick up from the table.
- It's harder to damage than cardboard, and more resistant to spills.

- You can wear it if you really want to, but it only comes in large - the board won't fit on smaller sized ones.

In Band Manager: Backstage Clash, there are two types of cards:
- Career cards, which represent your current profile as a musician. They come in different values, and in four suits: "Hype, Chops, Riffs and Gear", that correspond to your fame, talent, taste, and wealth, respectively.
- Fan cards, which are worth various amounts of fans (victory points). The first player to get 27 fans wins the game.
To get fan cards, you make tours. Tours are sets of career cards, one of each suit. Bigger tours can be made of multiple sets - more expensive, but can produce more fans.
Tours produce "spoils", a mix of career cards and fan cards, depending on the value of the career cards used on the tour. Other players can help you complete sets, but then they also get a share of the spoils.
Putting together tours is a negotiation between players over what career cards they bring vs their picking order. Players take turns being tour manager, who always gets first pick and has the final word in negotiations.
Store up career cards for a big tour, or spend them quickly? Make a quick grab for fans, or build up a better career? Tag along on every tour to maximise your pickings, or be more selective? You decide!

I’ve been producing games and game-like things for many years now, though this is the first tabletop game I'm taking to market. Previous works include:
• The Betrayers’ Banquet, a 48 person, eight course live game banquet based around the prisoner’s dilemma.
• Home Turf, an interactive sculpture exhibited at the Wellcome Collection Play festival in 2015.
• Cryptofloricon, a system for sending encrypted messages with flowers.
• PaperJam, a long running series of tabletop game jams (at which Battle of the Bands was invented!)
Band Manager was originally inspired by my time spent in various weird bands, most “famously” The Clockwork Quartet. (hey, steampunk was almost cool once…)

Risks and challenges
We love making games and want to keep doing it, so we'll do whatever we can to make sure your game arrives and you're happy with it. While there's always the possibility of minor delays where manufacturing is involved, we're doing our best to follow industry best practice, so we don't expect any showstopping issues.
This game has been in development for several years now, and playtested hundreds of times, including with groups at London Playtest Meetup, at Loading Bar, and at the UK Games Expo, and hasn't changed sinced 2015, so we're confident that it's a solid game. We have several dozen reviews coming out in the next few weeks and hopefully those will speak for themselves!
All the artwork is complete, with the exception of additional artwork unlocked by stretch goals or premium tiers. These shouldn't add more than an additional week.
We are manufacturing with LudoFact, one of the most venerable boardgame manufacturers in Europe. Everything in the game - cards, tshirt, badges, box, etc - are common, commoditised components with low manufacturing risk. We are very excited to be travelling to the factory in November to personally inspect the final proofs!
Shipping & Distribution:
We're using a major distributor that carries many thousands of products and specialises in toys and games, who will handle all aspects of packing, shipping and customer service.
