About

Clothing is essential. Without it, you're seen as mad (Who knew it was non-optional.) Yet it seems like everything we buy damages the planet. That it’s a luxury both on time and money to find an eco-friendly alternative.

We set out to change that. We believe it should be easy, convenient and wallet-friendly to do so, that every purchase should take away plastic instead of adding. Imagine if all Clothing took away ocean plastic and weaved it into the very fabric of our clothes, introducing the OceanApparel T.

The technology is available for all clothes, accessories and apparel to be made from recycled plastic so why the 'shell' don't we use it? ('Sea' what we did there)

Here at OceanApparel, when we finally stopped googling 'ocean-related puns,' we had the same thought. Worldwide we produce millions of tons of clothes, accessories and textiles. What if we could use old plastic as a raw material. If it was valuable and useful would we be less likely to be dumping millions of tons of it into the oceans and would there be more incentive to pick up what we have already dumped there. Could we finally turn the tide as it were on plastic pollution? (Okay, okay we'll stop with the puns.)

We thought we'd start with the hardest item first. For a T-shirt to work, it has to be breathable, light and most important so soft it could possibly be your pyjama top. How can you get all of this from recycled plastic? After months of tinkering, we finally...(If we can blow our own trumpet for a second.) Nailed the heck out of it.

Continued by Liam - Founder and that guy that did the interview thing.

100% Comfortable. Like most people, I like to wear T-shirts (what a weirdo),  and sometimes if they're comfortable enough I'll wear it to bed. I call it the 'bed test.' I wanted our T-shirts to pass the 'I'm too lazy to change into pyjamas so I'll just sleep in what I'm wearing' test. Because as amazing as T-shirts are that prevent ocean plastic, if it's not comfortable we can't wear them (And I'm running low on PJ's)

Breathable. It's rumoured that occasionally in my home country of England it stops raining.  And sometimes when it stops raining we see the sun. It's all true... We call it 'Summer' and it lasts for about a week. But in those glorious few weeks or even when the heating is on high we are reduced to T-shirt's, shorts and lots of ummm, sweating. So next on our list was the T-shirt had to be breathable. Something that 'just in case' I'm running late I can jump out of bed (well roll out of bed and crawl toward the coffee machine) and use the same comfortable T-shirt at the gym, or when playing football or whatever sport you want to do.

Recycled Packaging

Our packaging is 100% biodegradable. Made from recycled cardboard and plant-based materials.

Longer Lasting. I'm coming up to my character limit so I'll keep it short and sweet. The added benefit of using plastic is that it makes it more durable. Plastic takes a long time to break down, it's why there is so much plastic pollution.

Machine Washable & Recyclable. Because it's plastic we want to make sure we can keep recycling it and close that loop. We also want to make sure that we can throw it in the wash and come out as fresh as a daisy. In our next phase, we will be working on solutions to micro-plastics. (See FAQ's)

Fair Living Wage.  We have partnered with the fairwear foundation. Like their counterpart fairtrade, they make sure that not only is there no exploitation, but that employees thrive. That means a wage far above the minimum wage, an actual living wage as well as no pay discrepancy because of gender so we can help bridge the gender pay gap.

Why Reuse Plastic?

First, 91% of plastic is never recycled. So what happens to it! It ends up in landfills, fields, rivers, our oceans and more. But what if plastic waste had value. Think about it, how often do you throw away your money? If your a relatively sane person your not throwing your money on the floor or in the trash because it took you too darn long to get it in the first place and well for the average Joe, life is too expensive.

So what if plastic waste had value? Not brand new plastic, but old used, discarded plastic. Would you throw it away, or if someone did, wouldn’t a whole industry be born out of collecting it!

Second, so how can we create value for old plastic? Picture this, every minute a garbage truck worth of plastic is dumped into our oceans. In that same time, we produce 60 garbage trucks worth off clothes. We produce 60 times more clothes per minute than we dump into the ocean. So what if we could recycle this plastic into our clothes to make it useful and valuable because we produce so so many clothes...

In most western countries we recycle our plastic. It means we have to put our plastic in very particular coloured boxes, but where does most of it go? Did you know we export it! We send it out to other countries to deal with. 'Ludicrous' we hear you say, we leave it to other countries to clean our mess up? So is it any surprise when you hear that 'up to 95 per cent of river-borne plastic polluting the world's oceans pours in from just ten rivers, according to new research, eight of which are in Asia.

So we take our plastic from the source, mostly from recycling plants in India.

Why is it important to target the source?

While we are incredibly proud of the efforts people have gone to, in order to clean our oceans, it is not the solution to our plastic problem. Have we gone crazy, should we not concentrate our efforts on cleaning the oceans? Let us explain. Imagine that you walk into your kitchen and a pipe has burst and there is water leaking everywhere. What do you need to do first? You need to turn the water off. How do you know that? You know that no matter how fast you mop that floor, or how many towels you put down it won't prevent the water coming out that pipe.

That’s our philosophy at Ocean Apparel.

We need to stop plastic leaking into our oceans and earth otherwise our cleanups will be as relentless as that burst pipe you haven’t turned off yet.

We will contact you later about the size and colour choice. We currently have these 7 colours, however, we will be able to add some more colour's to this before we contact you.

Sizes range from XS-XXL in both women's and men's

Risks and challenges

At the moment we are a very small team, so scaling up the number of T-shirts will be challenging.
However, we have a plan... Family. We have a big family and if needs be, we will hire more people to help us fulfil orders on time (or hopefully earlier). If you're passionate about saving our oceans drop us an email.
