About this project
The Rambler is our flagship sport touring bicycle model, coming in three colors, with a special 4th color 'Founders Orange' for this program- all made in the USA. A true sport touring bicycle rooted in traditional French style, with modern design and hand-made in Portland, OR. A road bike by definition, but not a “racing” bike. The lightweight steel frame is responsive yet provides the stability and handling that delivers comfort mile after mile, whether you are on a cruise to the post office or back to back weekend century rides, the Rambler can be your go-fast bike and still carry home the groceries.
Is the Rambler the right bike for you?
Have you been looking to get a bike that bridges transportation and sport? Transportation does not have to be a mini van, you can still have a sporty ride with clean styling, great handling and a carry modest load. You like bikes that have a traditional look and styling, possibly a preference for traditional french styling from the 40′s and 50′s, with your daily load up front on a rack where you can keep an eye on it and easily get to it without climbing off the bike. Then the Rambler is the right bike for you.
With years of personal research and design study I have addressed these issues with the Rambler, a bike steeped in the lineage of the traditional French touring bikes. Using modern production techniques and partnering with a U.S. fabrication team to deliver the look and function you want, with a few bells and whistles thrown in.
The ride will be light and sporty, yet stable with loads for your commute, day rides or the occasional quick load of groceries up front. It goes without saying there will be provisions for full coverage fenders to keep you and the bike clean for year round riding. This is the bike you will want for rambles through the countryside, distance rides and randonees, and still be your daily steed.
The basic Rambler package consists of the hand made 4130 steel frame and fork with Paul Racer Brakes mounted on brazed on bosses. You have choice of color: Sunflower, U.S. Blue, Rexford Red, and a limited run of Founder's Orange for this Kickstarter Program.

Sizing and Fit
The Rambler is a based on a traditional bicycle frame design with horizontal top tube. In general this combined with the lower bottom bracket result in having a frame that may be one size larger than your current road bike. Likewise there will be less exposed seat post than you may have seen on a bike in decades, but I assure you that there is plenty of stand over clearance. If your donation is such that you will be receiving a frame set or complete bike as a reward we will work with you on an individual basis to assure that you are getting the correct size. Further sizing and fitting info will be in the upcoming FAQ.

$15 - A hand written note of appreciation, custom printed Ocean Air Cycles postcard from the selection above and three stickers screen printed on vinyl backing.
$25 – An Organic cotton musette bag custom printed with Rambler art, made in San Francisco, CA. The bag is made with US grown 10 oz. organic cotton duck and measures 13” wide x 12” high with a 41” fixed length strap. These make a great grab and go bag for a few small items, tablet, lunch etc..
The art concept for the shirts and bags is a line drawing/silhouette of the two Rambler builds, porteur and randonneur, with choice of one image for the reward.
$35 – Custom printed American Apparel T-Shirt with Rambler art in both men’s and women’s cuts in the fine cotton jersey. The art will be similar to the Musette bags above. There will be a few color choices, so stay tuned to the updates and Facebook page as the project moves along. The square logo will be on the back of the shirt, approximately 3 inches wide, the bicycle image on the front
$55 – Both the musette bag and American Apparel T-shirt printed with Rambler art, and hand written thank you note.
$75 – Fall Limited edition 13 x 19 photo print, signed and numbered, printed on archival grade matte photo paper. Long time readers of our blog know that I love to combine my passions for cycling and photography. Once the project has gotten under way I will be putting in some miles on our local back roads to capture this year’s fall image. The example below is from last winter, and I will update the image for this reward as soon as I have it captured.

Due to the nature of the work delivery on complete bike will take approximately one month longer than the delivery of the framesets alone. This reward will also include your choice of a musette bag or t-shirt as well as a few stickers. The donation includes Shipping in the U.S.A. Sorry but no international orders on these yet.

To my patient wife, while I follow my dream. My family both mine and in-laws for their love, support, babysitting. etc.. To all the friends and neighbors who have helped with art, video shoot, bikes to restore and honest feedback. To the six of you who had the faith in my abilities to deliver a run of bikes while pursuing funding for a full sized order. All of the vendors and contractors who have helped with knowledge, skills material and services. Without all of you I would not have made it this far.
Now moving to the next level, Thank You all of you backing the project, spreading the word and changing the world by choosing to get around town self propelled, we are the change.
Now lets get this ride going!

Risks and challenges
My biggest challenge has been bringing together all of the vendors and contractors to keep this as much of a "Made in the USA" project as possible. At this point in the timeline of bicycle production offshoring many of the vendors that used to exist are not what they used to be. A few of my vendors are sole source in the U.S. at this point. I know that Ocean Air Cycles is at the front of a wave of change in the industry, and that efforts like ours will not only revive the existing vendors, but create new jobs and opportunities for here at home, all the while providing products that meet a genuine need and consumer demand. With the supply chain currently secured, Ramblers are ready to go. All we need now is riders.
My secondary challenge has been getting everything done, particularly the art for the rewards. In my focus on the frame sets I let it slip. Stickers and post cards are done, but the new art for the shirts and bags is a bit behind. It is my goal to have it in place early in the second week of November. With a super tight timeline, if we are able to achieve early funding I will be pulling the trigger early on the shirt and musette orders, and doing everything I can to get them out in time for the holidays.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Many cyclists at the enthusiast levell are also home mechanics. It can be very rewarding to assemble a frame up from a pile of components. If that is not your thing, there are a couple of options. I would be more than happy to build you a bike within either of the two reward budget options for a complete build. Outside of that I can ship the frame set to you or the local bike shop of your choice to have them build it up. I am more than willing to work with you and them to develop a bill of materials that will get you the bike you have been wanting.
Yes! Just pledge the combined amount of the rewards you'd like. Here are some examples:
+ If you'd like (3) Musettes, pledge $75
+ If you'd like (2) t-shirts, pledge $70
+ If you'd like (2) Rambler Frame sets (you wife will want one too), pledge $3400
You can choose any reward tier. After the campaign ends, I'll get in touch so that you can let me know which combination you had in mind, and where to ship each reward.
