About

The ocean's pH is changing because of human interaction. Insite International is creating "Ocean pH Report", a pH monitoring software designed to track the ocean's acidity levels in a comprehensive and simple format. Ocean pH Report will leverage the advent of new technologies and increased global data feeds to create the next generation, dynamic online ocean monitoring and alert system. One that empowers people everywhere to better manage our most abundant natural resource.

The ocean contains 97% of the water on Earth. As of now, very little is known about the quality of water and how it is changing as a result of carbon dioxide emissions created by human activity.

As a team of software engineers, NASA trained technologists, SCUBA professionals and researchers, Insite International is embarking on the first phase of an X-PRIZE competition to monitor the ocean's acidity levels. As a result, we plan to present this data to researchers, technologists, activists and a non-technical concerned audience so we can all better understand the effects of acidity and help predict and protect the future of our oceans.

Insite International is seeking funding for the development of pH monitoring software OceanPHReport.com which includes costs associated with having our team attend the Wendy Schmidt Ocean Health XPRIZE Forum, held in conjunction with Oceanology International 2014 in London, England. One of the primary goals of the forum is to help attendees identify potential collaborators, partners, additional funding sources and other valuable resources in the development of ocean pH sensor technology.

Through scheduled events and activities, we will have the opportunity to explore how working together with other teams might help enhance our system and better understand potential markets for pH sensor technologies. In addition, XPRIZE will coordinate press, media and marketing initiatives to attract valuable attention by participating in the Forum. The Forum will also include one or more events that will showcase our Team and Team Members, as well as allow us to demonstrate and discuss our technology and otherwise engage with the press, media and the public.

With your support, you will directly fund the development of Ocean pH Report software designed to put decision-relevant information in the hands of governments, companies, non-governmental organizations, and the public. We will deliver the software necessary to track and rate pH changes of the ocean at various locations, depths and temperatures using sensor technology and data feeds from a global network. This type of data exchange is made possible by organizations like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Much like keeping a golf score, Ocean pH Report software will be easy to read and understand at a glance. Furthermore, it will allow the user to drill-down for much more detail.

Our team has more than 50 years of combined experience in the software development industry. We have worked in a variety of fields ranging from finance, aerospace and Oil & Gas exploration. It is our plan to use every bit of our experience combined with your contribution to address and surmount this problem.

Ocean pH Report will be commercially and publicly available during the course of the XPRIZE competition, which runs until June 2015. The result of which will lead to a commercially available sensor that significantly outperforms current sensor technology available today. At that point, Ocean pH Report will have matured and evolved to become a much needed asset in lifting public awareness into this ever-growing problem.

It is expected that the field of Ocean Acidification research will grow significantly within the next few years and Insite International aims to have this software become a standard for reporting pH levels. We plan to stay at the forefront of this technology and constantly evolve based on scientific innovation.

Your support will directly fund the development of Ocean pH Report software, bringing forth new ideas, promoting human awareness and offering solutions through technology for a rapidly growing problem facing our planet.

-One third of all carbon dioxide emitted by humanity has been absorbed by the world’s oceans.

-  Current business activity causing CO2 emissions could make the ocean up to 150% more acidic by 2100.

- Ocean acidification may render most regions of the ocean inhospitable to coral reefs. This will affect tourism, food security, shoreline protection, and biodiversity.

- The concentration of atmospheric CO2 continues to increase. At the current rate, the ocean will become corrosive to the shells of many marine organisms by the end of this century.

-  The ocean’s capacity to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere is being degraded by ocean acidification. This could worsen its impact on climate change.

-The ocean absorbs CO2 from human activities at a rate of 22 million tons per day.

- Further research and collective action is needed to fully understand and mitigate the impacts of ocean acidification.

Risks and challenges

Software Architecture, Management & Life-Span
-Inherent to software development are risks and challenges associated with project coordination, technological complexities and application longevity. We address this challenge through knowledge, experience, first class development environments and online tracking tools. Our team practices agile methodologies and we take pride in our excellent success rate.

Adaptation and Evolvement
-Ocean pH Report has the distinction of being one of the first applications to be developed alongside a breakthrough measurement technique. Our agile development approach goes hand in hand with this type of project. This growth makes the software more relevant over time.

Quality of pH Measurements
-Ocean pH Report will acquire a variety of data feeds. Our standard buoy feeds adhere to the CLIVAR data policy and principles. Learn more about this at:
http://www.clivar.org/resources/data/clivar-data-policy.
In addition, our data specifications will be derived from our work with the Ocean Health X-Prize Competition. Development of a novel pH sensor will introduce new and innovative technology. With this, a panel of judges will ensure that the course of development follows strict guidelines for precision and accuracy.

Software Glitches
-Insite International uses the skill sets of programmers who have developed commercial software applications for over 30 years. Our method dictates that we follow a flexible, holistic product development strategy where we work as a unit to reach a common goal. This expertise allows us to have in our arsenal, the resources to not only fix any problems that may come our way, but also ensure these problems are avoided in the first place.

Access to pH Measurements
-Global Data Assembly Centers (GDACs) are the primary portal for Ocean pH report. Insite international’s engineers and scientists have also worked extensively with the University of California and NASA. We have access to the latest studies, technologies and other resources that allows us to effectively share this data with the public. We are dedicated to providing the most accurate measurements using Ocean pH Report.

User Support
-Having user support is the most important part of any project. We wholeheartedly believe in the necessity of understanding climate change and ocean acidification-- and expect our users will also! Being global participants in preserving our planet’s resources is important to us and we need like-minded individuals involved.

That said, we will do everything we can to make Ocean pH Report interactive, informative, understandable and fun. We are relying on our creativity and insight to engage users throughout its development and production!
