SHE: A VISUAL ODE TO VISIONARY WOMEN
100 beautiful ways to share the brilliant words of visionary women writers, from Sappho to Sylvia Plath.
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Thu, March 7 2019 5:00 PM UTC +00:00.
WHAT IS SHE?
SHE is a beautiful boxed set of 100 art postcards featuring illustrations inspired by women writers. From Sappho’s ancient call-to-action, "become a voice," to Virginia Woolf’s call for intellectual freedom in A Room of One's Own, these foundational writers had a remarkable impact on future generations, and made us question, think, rebel, and laugh.
Our illustrations are a visual ode to these visionary women, and our way of drawing attention to the immense contribution women writers have made.
The collection includes two each of 50 postcards--one to keep, one to send. They are printed on print quality lush paper and encased in a keepsake box that will look beautiful on your bookshelf or coffee table.
Whether you cherish them as a collection, surprise loved ones with snail mail, frame them as art, use them as gift cards, or tack them to your inspiration board, we hope that you and your friends will enjoy the artwork for years to come.

PREMIUM POSTCARDS IN A KEEPSAKE BOX
When designing our women writers boxed set, two things were very important to us: The quality of the paper and the keepsake, giftable nature of the box.
Each postcard is printed on lush, print quality paper for rich, lasting saturated color. The postcards will look as lovely in a frame as they will in a mailbox.
The gift box opens like a book and is finished with elegant, uncoated textured paper that has a wonderful tactility. We are currently awaiting our final sample and will photograph it and share it with our backers as soon as we can.
WHY ARE WE MAKING IT?
Fans want more. We have more ideas.
In 2017, we released our women writers collection. The initial collection was comprised of 24 illustrations and is our studio’s most popular project to date. Almost immediately our fans inquired about additional illustrations, and it was due to their enthusiasm for the artwork--and our long list of beloved writers!--that we decided to expand the collection.
HOW YOUR SUPPORT WILL HELP
In order to use elegant papers and finishes and also keep the collection affordable, we need to do a large initial print run. By backing the project ahead of production, you're not only making it possible, but you're also integral to the fine quality of the finished box.
26 NEW WRITERS & ILLUSTRATIONS
Our current illustrations are inspired by classics authors such as Emily Dickinson, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, Zora Neale Hurston, Mary Shelley, Charlotte Brontë, Virginia Woolf, Edith Wharton, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Murasaki Shikibu, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
For the expanded collection we're adding 26 additional women (for a total of 50) and are currently seeking permissions to include more modern-classic voices such as Sylvia Plath, Joan Didion, Toni Morrison, and Harper Lee. We are also adding some lesser known female voices to round out the collection.
Throughout the campaign and in the coming weeks, we'll be unveiling a new illustration each week as part of Project 52, which you can follow along with here.
There’s just something about 100 of something.
First: We’re big fans of the postcard box set. There’s something about a beautiful box filled with 100 beautiful things. It makes a great gift and it's the most convenient and affordable way to share an entire collection with you.
But because we’re unapologetic paper snobs (aren't most book lovers?), we’re kicking up the quality on both the postcard paper and the box. We want the gift box to be an exquisite art object itself and as delightful as the illustrated postcards inside. In other words: These aren't your average flimsy tourist shop postcards.
We're also fans of snail mail and handwritten notes.
We can't think of anything we'd like to receive more than a delightful mailbox surprise from someone we care about. We hope other people will enjoy receiving an unsuspected piece of art among the bills and flyers as well.
We hope to inspire the next generation of female voices.
100 postcards means 100 opportunities to teach young women about the female writers that forged the way. We hope the cards arouse curiosity about the works from which the quotations are derived, foster a love of handwriting notes, and inspire them to think as big as these remarkable women did.

Hi! We're Nichole and Evan Robertson. We're a husband and wife team and we co-run Obvious State--a creative studio and indie publisher.
Obvious State began simply as a means to solve our bare wall problems. We're both lifelong book lovers, and years ago after a failed search for literary art, we decided to make our own. We shared the first three illustrations online and were overwhelmed by requests to make them available as prints. That initial enthusiasm combined with the continued support has allowed us do what we love, and for that were are so grateful.
Today our illustrated goods are sold in over 1000 bookshops and boutiques worldwide, largely thanks to our engaged community and retail partners who have been with us along the way, and have been eager to share our work.
We can't thank you enough for reading our campaign details and hope you'll support our project and help us make this boxed set a reality.

Risks and challenges
We have been manufacturing and fulfilling our studio's literary goods since 2011, therefore the risks of complications with this campaign are quite low. We have trusted partners and processes in place that will ensure a smooth production schedule. We have also already run a successful Kickstarter campaign in the past. If any major challenges were to arise that affected the delivery schedule, we would of course keep everyone informed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
