Update by Rose Gomez, Associate Producer

Greetings backers! In today's update, we've got some great new character and area art for you to check out. Our artists have been hard at work creating beautiful new areas and lots of new armor for the game. Our next update will be the next chapter in the class series, all about chanters and priests, by Josh Sawyer.

Characters

Recently our character artists have been hard at work crafting as many armor types as possible. All of our armor types have a variety of quality levels: normal, fine, and exquisite. JD Cerince recently finished up the plate armor designs for the game, which you can see here.

Some pieces of plate armor.

James Chea worked on the scale armor for the game. Below you can see a few varieties for female player characters. Cloth pieces for our armor sets can be tinted as in Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale.

Areas

It's not all dungeons and darkness in Pillars of Eternity. Sean Dunny finished up the beautiful beachy area of Anslog's Compass. Wave effects and details are courtesy of John Lewis. Named for a rocky stretch of land which theoretically resembles a sundial, this lagoon provides decent fishing for both brave Dyrwoodans and a local contingent of xaurips. More than one ship has met its end upon the nearby reef, and debris occasionally washes ashore from the wreckage.

Here you can see the Hall of Warriors done by April Giron. This large wooden structure is used as a meeting place for visiting warriors within Twin Elms. It is here that the Glanfathan hunters gather and tell stories of past deeds, discuss upcoming events and hunts, and conduct friendly contests of physical prowess (arm wrestling, tests of endurance, etc.). Sometimes, a visiting anamfath will take residence in the hall when visiting the city.

Here we have a section of a much larger dungeon by Sean Dunny. This is from Clîaban Rilag, an Engwithan ruin.

That's it for this week. We hope you enjoyed this quick art update! Come back next week for a thorough update on chanters and priests by Josh Sawyer.

      @ Bryy Miller:
On the contrary, they weren't "just asking a question".

"So with Art in Alpha and the estimated deliver being April 2014 - when can we expect to get the game? Is it a matter of months or years? Liking the updates, but would be liking a product more."
      See those last two lines?
They're complaining about developing a good game taking time.
They also say they like the updates but would like a finished product.
It's disgustingly impatient and shows complete disregard for the process and disrespect for the people working on it, not to mention for the game itself.

So no, I refuse. Your attempt to police my tone when quite clearly I just happen to give a damn about Project Eternity & respecting good content-creators is not appreciated.
Passion and emotion are not negatives.

      @Scottish Dragon,
"As for zegerman1942, why the HELL would you want them to rush the game out without as much content as they can cram into it and as much polish as it rightfully deserves?? Do you WANT a buggy mess of a product that ruins Obsidian's reputation & leaves you dissatisfied? I would damn well hope not. I say give them as much time as they need. If they need to push it beyond Winter 2014 then so be it. I just want them to be happy they've done the best they possibly could & provided the best product for all of us."
Dude, they were just asking a question. Calm down.

      So excited for this game!

So we have confirmation that surfing wizards are in?

@ancient_scars - do you mean this video?
      https://www.youtube.com/watch…

    6. Creator ancient_scars on May 2, 2014

@Willie - It's not a 3D engine. It's sort of 2.5D. The backgrounds are all on one plane while the effects are in 3D(ish). There was a video some time ago that explains it.

    7. Creator Anthony Gosselin on May 1, 2014

      I love that lagoon !

    8. Creator Arvid Granat on May 1, 2014

The shack to the right in Anslog's Compass seems like it would have it's foundation eroded rather quickly by water (which looks like it's reaching the walls already) and fall over. I don't think that is a reasonable placement.
Exquisite plate armor looks badass, though! Is that inlaid with gold? :D
      The rest looks really good!

      Oh my god

I'd like to add my voice to those saying THANK YOU for the female armour that looks like real armour that would actually protect someone in combat. I'm strongly hoping what little we've seen is representative. (I would also like to thank you for letting us customise with tinting. Anything that adds customisation gets major bonus points from me.)

    12. Creator Tsutako on April 30, 2014

The scenery and armour look so pretty! I love the female armour, thanks for ensuring I don't have to run around with nothing but a metal tassel for cover or armour that is bizarrely sculpted to each individual boob.

    13. Creator Randy Snow on April 30, 2014

Also the shacks seem a little too close to the water in the Anslog's Compass picture. What with tides, and storms that happen.

    14. Creator Randy Snow on April 30, 2014

While it might be out of reach... if this game had fishing that would be awesome.

    15. Creator kabaliero on April 30, 2014

      friggin' YES!
the big rpg happiness is moving in the murky depths of promising future :)

    16. Creator bl0m5t3r on April 30, 2014

looks soo good, can't wait to get my hands on it!

    17. Creator Ross Whalen on April 30, 2014

Is anyone else absurdly pleased about the tinted cloth? My favorite part of Mass Effect was running around in bright purple armor. Really hope this becomes a thing (again).

    18. Creator Windemere on April 30, 2014

Loving the art direction for the game so far. Keep up the great work.

    19. Creator Willie on April 30, 2014

That Hall of Warriors! Man...that is amazing. The visuals of this game...bloody amazing. It is EXACTLY like I want it; these truly look like HD versions of IE, even if it is a 3D engine in isometric perspective. It’s colourful, detailed, vibrant and just plain artistic in the same manner as the IE games were. It immediately captures my imagination and with the scenes populated with characters it will be even more awesome. Cannot wait for this. Again, the visuals are amazing, let's all just hope that the other three crucial factors are equally amazing: story (which includes for me the world lore and character personalities, i.e. essentially all the writing in the game), gameplay and music. Thank you for the update Obsidian.

But, when should the beta take place ? They thought "now" at the beginning ... And said so in update N (I forgot which one)

Both armors and places are looking great

This game is shaping up to be quite amazing. Looks great and the mythos seems quite grand in nature. Can't wait but I am a very patient person, especially when it comes to quality.

@zegerman1942 The estimated date is set by winter 2014, take a look at the update #72.

However those arts look awesome, I love your work! :)

*Zegerman, sorry for the typo =)

Zeferman, they've stated in several updates and in the latest trailer they did that they're aiming for Winter 2014 release.

    37. Creator Zombra on April 29, 2014

Love the work on that armor. Looks great.

If I were that kind of person, this is the part where I would say that all those extra engravings etc. would make plate armor *less* effective due to weapons tending to "catch" on them. But I'm not that kind of person. Nope. :P

    38. Creator Matt Huston on April 29, 2014
