Death Godlike and Expected Ship Date

Update by Rose Gomez, Jr. Producer

Hello everyone! My name is Rose Gomez - I'm the newest Producer on Pillars of Eternity. I'll be handling a lot of the Kickstarter related duties for the game from here on out. I've been working at Obsidian Entertainment for a little over three years now. My previous titles include South Park: The Stick of Truth and the Fallout: New Vegas DLCs. I'm thrilled to be able to work on Pillars of Eternity and can't wait to interact more with all of you in the coming months.

For this update, we've got some awesome new character, area, and concept art that we're excited to show. However, before we get to the art, we wanted to officially update everyone that we are looking good to release Eternity by Winter 2014. So, look forward to getting your hands on Pillars of Eternity later this year.

Our next update will be all about Pillars of Eternity lore by Eric Fenstermaker.

Stretch Goals

After much discussion and consideration of the poll on our forums we have decided not to pursue any additional stretch goals. Rest assured that the team is working hard on completing the game and including our current stretch goals.

Our designers are working hard to implement the designs that our higher tiered backers have come up with. If you have a survey that needs to be filled out, please do so by March 31st. It's important that you get your surveys completed by the deadline because we are closing in on Alpha quickly. The team needs ample time to get your content into the game. We can't guarantee your in-game contribution will make it into the game if you are late. This includes inn/tavern designs, adventurer party designs, portraits, NPCs, and items/weapons, so make sure you get your idea in before the deadline! You can fill out your surveys on our Backer Portal after you've finished managing your pledge. They can be found on your account page under the Surveys tab.

Worried that your design won't fit into Pillars of Eternity lore? Not sure if you want that innkeeper to be an Orlan or an Aumaua? Take a peek at the Pillars of Eternity Wiki to get some inspiration or clarification on the world.

With all that news out of the way, let's get to the art. To kick things off this week, we'd like to show you all some of the awesome new Godlike variants Dimitri has finished up - the Death Godlike. As we've mentioned before in previous updates, the Godlike are people that were "blessed" before birth by one or more of the deities of the world. Godlike manifest their divine heritage in a variety of ways, and in the case of the Death Godlike that heritage can be seen through their wicked looking horns and the misting darkness that shrouds their visage.

Another type, the Earth Godlike, can be seen below in some new portrait variants that Polina whipped up. These are just a few of the combinations that will be available to use for your character during the game.

The environment artists are flying through their various scenes and churning out awesome looking pieces week by week. Below you can see a cool new interior from a Blacksmith's shop by Holly Prado.

Up next we have a really awesome piece by April Giron from an area called Ondra's Gift. This area is still a work in progress but we thought you all would enjoy taking a look at what we've got so far.

Both of these areas have a lot of cool detail in them so make sure you view them at full resolution.

In Pillars of Eternity, Druid characters will be able to shift into a few different spirit forms. Druids start with specific spirit forms and can find additional spirit forms in the world. One of these forms is the Cat, shown here in a concept drawing by Polina.

Below you can see what the Cat form looks like when modeled and textured, rendered out of our engine.

That's all for this week. Don't forget! If you need to fill out a survey for any Pillars of Eternity pledges please do so on our Backer Portal by the March 31st deadline. In the meantime, keep managing those pledges and commenting on our forums.

@Micael: You mean like an on all fours model? (re druid cat form) Sort of like the Wow druid playstyle, if you've been there.

    2. mike smith on February 17, 2014

Isn't it winter in the northern hemisphere now though? And its 2014? Effectively, there's 2 winter in a year. (and 2 summers downUnder), so its a kind of vague delivery description. But if you mean November/December, fair enough.

    3. manio on February 16, 2014

Great pieces of art guys. And yea take your time, no rush, make it perfect.

I think I made my point fairly clear. Where the developer resides is irrelevant when talking about releases to customers all over the world.

      Very nice update, thanks!

    7. McDrake on February 12, 2014

The cat looks like a animal of the game Black&White

    8. Micael on February 12, 2014

In my opinion: there is way to much were(-wolf) form in that supposed Druid Cat form. If I'm to game a Druid in cat form, then I want to have that instant feeling that I am exactly that, but I don't wanna get the instant association of a Werewolf. As it is now, I associate that form as a Werewolf. Maybe it is the fur, or maybe it is the facial form or maybe it is them both together.
I'd rather have a much more and distinct Feline (Cat, Felidae or Felinae) form.

    9. Jon C - OOoE's Lurking Writer on February 12, 2014

Ship the game only when everyone involved in making it at Obsidian is 99% happy with it, and you feel we've tested it every which way but loose. There are bound to be things that crop up later on because nothing can ever be reliably 100% accounted for (that's the nature of this weird and wonderful universe of ours) but more time is spent on carefully crafting this gem of a beast the better.

The 'cat' looks like the person doing the render thought it was supposed to be a werewolf with that lengthened muzzle and mouth compared to the concept.

    11. Trister - OO's Tormented Master Wetboy on February 12, 2014

      @justin sher

i'd imagine that since they're a north american company, you can fairly safely assume that it's in the norther hemisphere. just think about if for a minute and it's kind of obvious.

Dear everybody, I am not complaining. Just asking what Winter 2014 means to the person stating it. From posts that follow I see I am not the only one confused. As for statements about stretch goals adding to time, nowhere has a new estimated delivery date been given. If it has, I have not seen it.

    13. Mebahell on February 12, 2014

I think the cat is low poly because his dimension on the screen wil be pretty small, so if they make it at higther resolution it will not be much better to look and will use many more resources.

Oliver Uvman on February 12, 2014

The Druid Cat render really butchered all the nice dark/light contrasts from the concept art. Does not look at all as magical or visually appealing as the concept! What kind of decisions led to that, if I may ask? Does it look better in-game with lower contrasts, easier to see what is what, or was it just accidental?

    15. Missing avatar

Jon Austenaa on February 12, 2014

The areas however look very nice and good contrast and dynamics.

Jon Austenaa on February 12, 2014

The Druid cat in game render looks a bit low poly, low res and dry textured. A bit like how games looked before DX9. I think even fur can be a bit shiny, but maybe at least create higher poly and higher res characters? Many people will play at 1440p or 4k.

    17. Justin Sher on February 12, 2014

So are you talking about a Winter 2014 release in the Northern or Southern hemispheres? Or do the people in the Southern hemisphere get it 6 months before those up North?

It always amazes me that people forget that the internet (and their customers) are from all over the world and that there is another half a world out there...

    18. Willem on February 12, 2014

Incredible! Looks amazing. Everything you showed just floored me with its awesomeness. I love the Death godlike look as well the earth one. The w.r.t. the detail. Just perfect; that's how I want it to look. Almost "painted" with awesome attention to detail. From a visual perspective, you nailed it. Now you guys just need to deliver an awesome story and characters with deep RPG choice and consequence (world reaction) and this will be a legendary video game...

And yeah, take your time. DON'T rush it. If it needs to be delayed to 2015, so be it.

    19. Stephen Bachinski on February 12, 2014

Now I want my heroine to be an Earth Godlike druid... can't wait until Winter!

Yep, devs do have internal QA teams, but the big final attack on finding those pesky bugs is the publisher's responsibility. And naturally they never grant it the attention it deserves when they're already rushing the respective game out the door to meet some self-imposed (fiscal quarter) deadline.

    23. Mich-666 on February 12, 2014

I know you can't use name Tiefling but can you consider some different name for Godlike? (it sounds really bad for a race, very imaginative, not to mention they are destined to be outcasts of the society as all those who are different)

"Marked" maybe? "Remnants"? "Hallowed"? "Forlorn"? Or even some other name in language of one of older races? And I think community can think of even better names.
Please think more about those names.

    24. Paul Andersen on February 12, 2014

Take your time. Nothing would make me happier than a well polished project, not a rushed one.

    25. Tomimt on February 12, 2014

A lovely update. Even lovelier was the estimated release schedule.

    26. Shiroco-Librarian of Unwritten Tales 542 on February 12, 2014

Holy crap! Nice update ;D I really love the art style and I almost can't wait for it to come out. Despite my cravings for the game, I still hope you'll take as much time as you need to finish it.

PS: The Godlike look phenomenal ;D

    27. Theobeau:OOoE\Mad man with a box/Exiled on February 12, 2014

Interesting update; the images were impressive with the druid shape shifting forms particularly unique.

However best news was the release date. If PoE comes out as planned, I think it will be the first major KS gaming project that hasn't been afflicted by a significant shifting of release dates.

Fingers crossed OBS can make it happen!

    28. Michaeljack on February 12, 2014

Wouldnt suprise me one bit to learn that. I cant see Obsidian ever willingly releasing a game in a bug-ridden state

    29. Tobi (Crusader Kickstarter pls!!) on February 12, 2014

@Michaeljack - also I have read somewhere that in those classical publisher-developer deals the QA is the responsibility of the publisher, not the developer. so basically the publisher forces you to release early and then doesn't do a decent job on QA and voila, the reputation of the developer suffers.

By all means, take as much time as it takes to make the game we all want! It would make no sense to spoil the game and the whole crowdfunding things just because of a few impatient kids who don´t get it!

Speaking of impatient kids... When will we get the next peace of the Arcanum playthrough? Last one is quiet some time ago...

    31. Michaeljack on February 12, 2014

Im totally fine with the delay. Whenever anyone complains about Obsidian games its generally because the publishers forced them to bring the game out before it was ready. Anyone who wants to whine about this delay should think hard about that...

    32. Kahuna Kevin on February 12, 2014

Please ship when it's done, thoroughly tested and when the box sets don't contain useless coaster DVDs that have buggy games on them.

Great to hear, I like the timeline.

To be honest, I was and always am: rather ship later than ship something buggy. If it were for me and you've enough funds you could go well into 2015 too ...

    34. Tobi (Crusader Kickstarter pls!!) on February 12, 2014

So with the usual delays Q1 2015... Looking forward to it! Nice update, I love the enviroment art!

Nice work, take your time, christmas 2014 would be nice, but i will wait for quality. It is a huge project and with the stretch goals a lot more.

    36. dungeoncrawl on February 12, 2014

They mean winter 2014....on Mars. Southern Hemisphere (someone will ask).

    37. dungeoncrawl on February 12, 2014

@Mick - my 'pretty sure' was sarcasm. It's safe to say that anybody who has been following this even passively knows 100% they mean Dec 2014. So closed.

    38. Bryy Miller on February 12, 2014

I dunno, I just think it's a general thing and not any one specific reason for a delay. As in, even without Oda Nubanu and all the backer customs, it would still be delayed.

Hate to be nit picky but your Blacksmith seen is missing a very important element. A large water bucket or water trough. Outside of that they look awesome.

    41. twincast ~ Mangy WoOS-DOoD Mage
      on February 11, 2014

Not to mention the confusion of whether they mean the end or the beginning of the year when saying winter (N)/summer (S).

But if they'd follow your suggestion, then one wouldn't know if they meant calendar quarter (which they usually don't) or fiscal quarter (which they'd then need to make clear which particular definition they mean).

There is no perfectly clear solution without adding a modifier or two, no matter if they go by seasons or quarters.

    42. twincast ~ Mangy WoOS-DOoD Mage
      on February 11, 2014

Well, it's still a huge, giant, humongous shame that not every class is getting represented by a fleshed out companion character, but like I said when you asked us, the time to carry over the hype à la Star Citizen passed by long ago, so it'd probably be doomed to fail to begin with - unless you were raising funds through Early Access, but at that point (i.e. being as far into development as D:OS and WS2 were, preferably even farther) creating new companions (and integrating them design-wise) would seem already too late, even if you tackle them as late as you said you do.

      *sigh* /wistful

And the reaction to a release date is why we can't have nice things. :( People tend to talk in their own vernacular, so if they say winter 2014, it's pretty safe to assume winter in North America 2014, and move on.

    45. The Evolutionary on February 11, 2014

Winter 2014 means 8 months after original release date. (With luck...) hope it works out. ;-)

Just gave me the biggest feeling of Nostalgia for the Baldur's Gate Trilogy, while at the same time looking very nice and fitting in with being a modern game.

It's also not hard to figure out what they mean by "winter 2014".

    50. Céline .S. Sauvé on February 11, 2014

I'm confused by the mention of "additional stretch goals"... That was a thing? Ever?

The Druid Cat reminds me of my kitties in the Black & White series. I wonder if they'll be half as impressive in action than my giant, stomping beasties...
