Meet the Developers - Mark Bremerkamp

In today's update we ask the Lead Animator on Project Eternity, Mark Bremerkamp a few questions about being a game developer. Mark hails from Detroit, Michigan, and he has been with Obsidian for eight years. He is a man of few words - everyone give a warm hello to Mark.

Q: Hello, Mr. Bremerkamp! What is your job on the Project Eternity team?

Lead Animator

Q: What are you working on this week?

Initial attacks for the light spear (1h thrust) and the pike (2h thrust)

Q: What is your typical work day like on Project Eternity?

First drink coffee then check my e-mail and look to see if there are any meetings that I need to prepare for. Then I usually look over the work from the day before. I like to always go back with a fresh set of eyes to see what worked and then I'll make some notes/changes. After all that I get to animating the fixes or I'll move onto a new animation.

Q: What are you most looking forward to on Project Eternity? What are you looking forward to animating?

That’s an easy one...Creatures. It's always fun to animate strange and creepy critters.

Q: What other games have you worked on?

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, Alpha Protocol, Fallout New Vegas, and New Vegas DLCs.

Q: What do you like to eat for lunch?

Well I usually brown bag because I head over to the gym at lunch. When I do go to a restaurant my first choice is Yard House at the Irvine Spectrum.

Q: OK. So, what is your favorite beer?

On a special occasion I like to drink Gulden Drook.

Q: What do you like to do when you aren't animating?

When I'm not animating I love to spend time with my wife and two children.

Q: Do you have a favorite animator or artist?

Chuck Jones is an animator that I really looked up to when I was younger. Richard Williams and the "Nine Old Men" are also high on my list. Some contemporary animators that I really enjoy are Carlos Baena (Pixar) Victor Navone and Keith Lango

Q: And where do you draw your inspiration from?

Movies, music, games and other animators are all part of it. But really life in general. All the world's a stage...

Q: Are you excited that the NHL is coming back?

Yes. It about damn time. Go Red Wings!

Q: What's your favorite game?

OK well...that's a really big question because like many different games for different reasons. Old school games are really near and dear to my heart. When I say old school I'm talking about Intellivison Games like the Treasure of Tarmin.

As for the newer games.... God of War, Batman, and Uncharted Series. I'm also playing a lot of games with my kids. A recent game that my 4 year old son and I both enjoy is LEGO Star Wars Battle Orders.

Q: Anything else you would like to share?

Thanks Mark!

Next week Josh is planning to have another game mechanics update for you. Steve, Tim, and Josh have been working on attack mechanics over the last week and are currently planning abilities for classes. I don't know what Josh has planned to write about, but I'm sure it will be interesting! Until next time.

what is the requeriments for mac version? Do you think this game will run in a Macbook Air 2010 (C2D 1,86, 4 GB RAM, nVidia 320m).

    4. Johan Palmcrantz on

No disrespect to Mark, but that was an utterly useless update... Come on guys! Hire some journalist or something! We don't need much, but at least try to make a serious and in some sense interesting info each time... Well, points for trying I guess.

      @Richard Luijten

Gulden Draak is a Belgian beer, not a Dutch beer ;-) I know this because I can see the dragon after which it was named from my bedroom window. You're right about Verboden Vrucht though, great beer. I'd also recommend Rochefort 10...

    6. Astrid (PolloDiablo) on

The beer is called Gulden Draak with two a's, not o's. Means Golden Dragon (but I guess that wasn't hard to figure out).

You are correct about them misspelling the name, but this wasn't a problem for me, I instantly knew what they meant.

For those interested in Belgian beers, another good one is "Duvel".

    8. theAnton on

All those beer connoisseurs and none of you mentioned that they misspelled the name of the beer?

      Tsk tsk :P

    9. Silver on

Short answers and right to the point. I like that. It leaves more time for work.

    10. Richard Luijten on

      >Drinking Gulden Draak
Yup, definitely the Dutchest. I salute you sir!
(And if I may, I recommend trying 'Verboden Vrucht' beer if you can)

    11. Richard Luijten on

      Mark Bremerkamp?
That must be the Dutchest guy at Obsidian!

My hat off to you, sir.
VTMB had the best facial animation I've seen in any video game.

    13. Jeff on

Have you tried La Chouffe and McChouffe? Mmmmm, lovely beers.

The pics aren't working for me - am I the only one? Could be something to do with the work browser...

If you like Gulden Draak, then (In my opinion, and as a matter of personal taste) you'll love Kasteel Bruin. The same strength, but generally richer in flavour across the board. Sadly though, I only know of exactly one pub that sells it outside of Belgium).

    15. Johannes 'Waldgeist' Rebhan on

@Scotty If an animator doesn't admire a game like Uncharted, what should he admire? Not only is a great game on many accounts, but the animation, the blending etc. is absolutely top notch on par with many movies. The same goes for Batman (which was also released for the PC and looks a lot better on it). Also God of War is brilliantly animated.

All of those three are third person action games. How many are there on the PC exclusively that could compete with those? Maybe he likes that exact category of games, so he choses the best of that category and they happen to be released on console.

A: I said too much already.

    17. T.J. Brumfield on

Bloodlines was a game that was really good and almost truly great. It turned into a hack-fest in the end and was extremely buggy. And the end of the story didn't deliver as much as I would have liked, though I really enjoyed the variety in endings and the choice afforded to the players.

There is a fan-made "unofficial patch" that adds tons of the game.

    18. Justin Roberts on

      Yes! Red Wings ftw!!!

    19. Wan Kit Fong on

      nice beer choice :)
