Update #25: The final hours. One end, and to new beginnings

Posted by Obsidian Entertainment (Creator)

The past month has been absolutely incredible. You have blown away our wildest expectations and we are so excited about starting the journey of creating this game for you. The Kickstarter site will be closing down here in the next few hours – 6 PM PDT to be exact. I would like to remind you that you can watch us at the studio for the final countdown beginning at 12 PM (Noon!) PDT. We will be streaming live on UStream and

Final Fun and Silly Reward Tier - Obsidian Loot Bag

Our final fun reward for you is what we are calling the Obsidian Loot Bag at a $350 tier with a limit of 30. The Loot Bag contains an AMD Processor donated by our incredible friends over at AMD (you rock Steve Bell!), a signed Obsidian game (not Project Eternity), and a random assortment of Obsidian loot such as pens, coasters, t-shirts, game patches, doodles, etc. The AMD Processor is an A10, does not have a heat sink attached, and will be shipped OEM style. The Loot Bag includes everything in the $250 tier level too. Since we are shipping computer parts, we can't ship outside the USA with this one.

Big Big City #2, What Now?

We dreamed the impossible dream, and hit our stretch goal of the $3.5m mark with Big Big City #2. Because we have another big city in the game, and by popular demand we are adding two additional slots at the $5000 tier for two more taverns.

As a recap of our stretch goals, here is what you have added to make Project Eternity bigger and better:

  • 11 classes
  • 6 races
  • 8 companions
  • A huge mega dungeon of at least 10 levels (and possibly 11 or 12 by the time this is done!)
  • Player house
  • A stronghold
  • Two big cities
  • And much more.

This will definitely keep us busy over the next 18 months working to bring you Project Eternity.

Early this morning, we took a poll on what you would like to see via Twitter, Facebook, and on our Kickstarter Comments page for remaining stretch goals. Our first reaction is that we want to make the game better instead of just bigger; however we are currently discussing it at the studio right now.

Thank you again from everyone at Obsidian Entertainment. We will see you on the live stream for the final hours of this crazy adventure. The art team put this together to show you a behind the scenes look on how the amazing screenshot was constructed.

Not sure that 6 races is enough. Just saying...

    2. Dracuella, Warden of the Obsidian Order on

@DaFriggenJedMan oh no, with that many base classes, I'd never get out of the character creation phase >_<

    3. DaFriggenJedMan on

I hope those are 11 BASE classes... not 4 base +7 Prestige.

    4. Wayne Reid on

Is that 11 classes and 6 races in total, or have we ADDED, this number to the game?

    5. Christian on

Could you show a making-of video of that last step, the paint over? It looks like a miracle and I'm not sure why the whole complicated 3D rendering makes it any easier for artists who can work miracles anyway.

      Looks great! I'm so happy!
Please focus on quality, you're right, that would the best! the bridge asymmetrical on purpose or is just me?

You know, I think there should be a rivalry between the two cities, maybe even a civil war, but it should only occur as a result of the player's actions. Have them start as being peaceful towards each other.

    8. Malte Mb on

WoW over 70k backpackers now! 20 000/ 2500 =8+ 1 by facebook + 3 already given at the beginning makes a total of 12 levels fore the mega dungeon!

    9. Gerardo Uribe on

Well, I would prefer tested, good quality game over a Big game, but there is something I would like to add: More companions. 2 more at least.

    10. Aoyagi Aichou on

I can't imagine how could you make such a (hopefully) complex and huge game in such short time. Please take at least twice that time :)

    11. Ankroth on

Awesome work from art team, keep it up! I'm glad that one of my favorite studio (yeah you Obsidian) have work to do, I'm proud that I pledged this project.

Seeing you guys achieving your goal and taking small part in making this possible is one of few birthday gifts I made for myself. Good luck with developement and keep us posted :)

    13. Ash Meredith on

Great job look forward to the progress reports as things start rolling full steam ahead.

    14. Mike Metzler

Wow, it certainly didn't take long for the loot bags to sell out.

    15. Paul Dunnells on

There are special US import/Export laws regarding certain technology, but there are also special customs procedures, depending on which country you ship to. It would turn the $350 price-tag into potentially thousands once all the customs and sponsorship was taken care of. I work a lot with import/export of tech as part of RMAs, and that's hard enough when what you are dealing with has already been declared. Obsidian is not trying to exclude anyone. I'm sure if they didn't have to deal with that, they would have made this open to everyone.

    16. T.J. Brumfield on

Obsidian did not make the conscience decision to exclude people outside the US. AMD made a gift to Obsidian, and Obsidian could only legally offer than inside of the US.

    17. Assaf Ronen on

well done guys, thumbs up for a great campaign!

    18. Sempavor - Bandit of the Obsidian Order on

That's incredible! I admit that I did not believe it would have reached the last, big goal...and it was even exceeded. Complimenti!

    19. Mike Petrillo on

      This game needs more companions.

    20. Kristian Pesti on

Even though I agree that you should spend the extra funds on making the game bigger I think that the stretch goals are one of the keys for "the last minute race". Make them something small for every extra 100 or 50k achieved. For example some unique stuff ingame for the Kickstarter/Paypal people. This will make people raise their pledges in the last minutes to achieve just one more stretch goal to get something more!

      Mike on

To all the people complaining about the US only tier - The US has special regulations regarding the exportation of certain computer components (the AMD chip in this case) which I assume Obsidian doesn't want to hassle with, it's not that they don't like you guys :P

    22. Spencer Penaloza on

that A10 man just saw the e-mail ran for the nearest internet devices, missed it sadly D: lol same as raccoon though, I am sure at the end of the month I would be better for it but man D: . grats obsidian on the kickstarter, definely can't wait for the game =)

    23. RaccoonTOF -Enigma of the Obsidian Order on

Missed out on the loot bag as, my wallet will probably thank me for getting wrapped up over at the forums in anticipation of the live stream...

    24. Paul Dunnells on

      This looks awesome! Thanks Obsidian!
You have your work cut out for you with all the stretch goals. I, for one, would like to see perhaps some more classes, a good selection of companions, and cool dialog. I agree that the time for more content is over. Please focus on the quality of dialog, companion interaction, cool quests, and lots of polish! The things that stand for me, personally, in these types of games are the companions and quests. BG, BG2, and Dragon Age had awesome companion interaction and things that really allowed you flexibility in the shaping of your primary character. If you wanted to be evil, you could be. If you wanted to be altruistic and knightly, you could be. And most everything in between.

Cheers and well done!! Now I sit back and wait, gnawing on something while I wait eagerly to see how your creation turns out! I'm happy that I was able to be a part of this in my own little way and I know how to step out of the kitchen and let the chefs do their thing! Some yummy appetizers would be great while we wait at the table though....

      Cheers again!
      -Paul D.

      Munin on

Frankly, I'm fine with you not adding another major stretch goal. Further fleshing out and polish all the way.

What you're aiming for is already far more than I ever expected when I pledged towards the start of all this. At this point I care more about you being in the best possible situation to deliver what is on the board now than to commit to anything further.

    26. Roflmaou on

people are never satisfied...You're getting a ton of content from stretch goals and I'm sure the extra money will go into more polish/quality for the current content.

    27. Justin Schardin on

I like the idea of improving the game rather than making it bigger. RPGs have always been my top genre, and I love the ones with a compelling and unexpected plot, depth of characters (particularly NPCs and the complexity of relationships with them), and a sense of how much my decisions impact how the game and those relationships play out. Planescape in particular is an all-time favorite for those reasons. If you can add some more nuance and "oh, wow" moments and details in that vein, I'll be thrilled.

    28. Anders Mellon Skov Hermansen on

Incredibly dissapointed by the last minute "US only" goodie bag - If you're already shipping stuff globally, you might as well bite the bullet and allow international pledgers. It's not like we're not already paying for shipping.

And really - a goodie bag? No "Since we went above expected - again, we're adding _____ to the game" announcement? Tsk tsk tsk

    29. Roflmaou on

@Tedd actually "The Loot Bag includes everything in the $250 tier level too. "

also i'm sure it was US only due to restrictions out of their control! Moot point anyway since all are taken.

This update is a huge disappointment.
First no new stretch goal with 6h left ?
And a US only tier, seriously ?

RE: stretch goals, to represent and celebrate how this campaign has gone beyond the impossible and right into the stratosphere in funding, I think you guys should have a final stretch goal, nothing particularly big or time demanding, but something which says 'you guys raised us £3.8m+, holy fuck!'

    33. Rafał Gąsiorowski on

      No additional stretch goal? :(

    34. Jan 'Deme' Porema on

Many of us is not living in US indeed.... :(

    35. tedd on

Paulo the loot bag does not contain any previous tiers so it would actaully cost more to give out a loot bag for $350 or above

you can get most of the stuff in the bag by adding rewards to your tier like playing cards, shirts and etc

    36. Merin

Better instead of bigger. Absolutely agree.

The world sounds big enough (and there always expansions) . How about investing something extra in quality voice acting. Wouldn't mind hearing another character voiced by David Warner.
      Also maybe some extra companions?

    38. David on

It won't be translated into Italian nor Portuguese?? :O

    39. Alessandro Kellis - Obsidian Order on

no shipping outside of u.s. makes me sad :( nvm, I'm glad we met all of the stretch goals!

    41. Trevor Lewis on

28 minutes from the email about the AMD reward tier and all 30 are *already* gone! I was going to use this as an excuse to upgrade my PC dagnabbit! Damn you Adam this is your fault. Somehow. I just know it is.

I vote for more dialog options that lead to different results. More instances where a guard can be persuaded to leave his post, the high priestess lets slip the location of the big gem, that sort of thing. In BG2, there were two very different ways into the Underdark. More like that would be amazing.

Seem logic to go with Better instead of bigger, but, why wouldn't they add more level into the mega donjon for each 50k or 100k after the 3.5m ? Everyone should be happy and it will give them even more $$

    49. Shervyn von Hoerl

      More polish please.
