Update #21 - 5 days left!

Everyone here at Obsidian is thrilled that the feedback to the first look at Project Eternity was so overwhelmingly positive. Thank you for all the encouragement - It really means a lot to our artists and the rest of the team. The outpouring of support and donations over the last day has been amazing. Thank you!

Over the next five days we have a lot of fun things planned to wrap up the Kickstarter campaign. First, crowdfunding and Kickstarter has allowed us to open up our doors to you, literally. Today you can spend a few hours with me at the Obsidian Office, and you will get an inside look into a development studio. Check out what an atypical day is for me at the office (running the Kickstarter is pretty atypical for a game developer). I promise to wear pants! We plan on doing more of these live events at the office during production.

Tomorrow I plan on playing Icewind Dale II by Interplay and Black Isle Studios. Icewind Dale II was the last Infinity Engine game to be released a decade ago in 2002. Before production starts on Project Eternity, I want to revisit some of the magic that Project Eternity aims to bring back. Join the stream and have some fun! Special Obsidian guest developers will join in on the fun, and you can heckle me while I try to make my way out of Targos and through the Dale to Kuldahar. How long will I play? 8 Hours? 12 Hours? 20 Hours? Longer? Watch and find out.

Be sure to check out tomorrow's update with Tim Cain. He is going to answer more of your questions in a special video update.

Here's the rest of the scheduled events for the next 5 days:

Friday, October 12

  • 11:00am PDT - Inside look at a not so typical day with Adam Brennecke - UStream.
  • 3:00pm PDT - PC Gamer Live Chat with the Project Eternity Team - PC Gamer.

Saturday, October 13

  • 10:00am PDT - Adam plays Icewind Dale II all day - UStream.

Monday, October 15

  • 10:00am PDT - Reddit AMA with the Project Eternity Team - Reddit.
  • 5:00pm PDT - Game night at Obsidian. Watch us play D&D at the studio! - UStream.

Tuesday, October 16

  • 12:00pm PDT - The final countdown starts at the Obsidian Office - UStream.
  • 6:00pm PDT - The Project Eternity Kickstarter ends!

Updates to the schedule will be sent via Twitter, Facebook, and posted to our forums.

New Novella Audio Book Reward and Add-on

We have a new digital add-on for everyone. For an add-on of $20 you will receive the digital Audio Book of the Project Eternity Novella by Chris Avellone narrated by a professional voice actor. If you already pledged at the $165 tier and above you will receive it for free!

Two Stretch Goals Hit and The Endless Paths is Larger

We've hit the $2.7M stretch goal, which means Paladins and Chanters are added to the game, and I'm happy to say we just hit the $2.8M stretch goal in record time! George Ziets will be joining the team! The team is very excited to have the opportunity to work with George again.

One more level has been added to The Endless Paths because of your help. The depths grow deeper by the day, and we are getting very close to 20,000 likes and 60,000 backers. 2 more levels incoming! Our next Facebook goal is to hit 40,000 likes - if we can reach that milestone it means we will add one more level to the dungeon! How low can we go?

And last but not least, I leave you with a new concept art piece of Forton the monk.

Thanks, and see you on the live stream!

Hey, that's Bill from Kill Bill !

    2. Creator Frogsbane on October 14, 2012

I think it would make sense to add the beta key to the $50 dollar tier. This is how much it cost for the Wasteland 2 Kickstarter and for Double Fine's it was included at the lowest tier.

    3. Creator Yosharian on October 14, 2012

THREE MILL OH YES STRONGHOLD BABY

    4. Creator Draffutt on October 14, 2012

I don’t know about that Justin; if you look at on main kickstarter page there is nearly 45K likes for Project Eternity (as of this writing) but when you scroll down to the Endless Paths section it only mentions the depth will grow for every 2,500 backers and they encourage everyone to spread the word about project eternity hence the 45k likes but no mention about liking Obsidian will grow the dungeon too. Yes I realize there is a 1 line blurb between Oct 10 and Past Updates but how many read will actual read through that or read the status updates (My 1st time here in the updates section in the 2 weeks I have known about this project)? So I feel I am potentially being robbed a chance at another level.

    5. Creator Nebojša on October 13, 2012

Will there be VoD's of the live stream game marathon thingy?

    6. Creator Tom D on October 13, 2012

I told myself only $25, tried to be strong. But omg so much stuff I'm up to $50 now

    7. Creator JadeL on October 13, 2012

I liked Obsidian on Facebook too, but not everyone uses Facebook.

    8. Creator gakmen, Low End of the Obsidian Order on October 13, 2012

Agreed with two previous posts completely! BTW, couldn`t stop myself from increasing my pledge after that update. ))

    9. Creator Fandil,Dawnbringer of the Obsidian Order on October 13, 2012

We have almost 60k backers but facebook "likes" only hit 20k? Seriously, every backer, go like Obsidian on facebook!!!

    10. Creator Richard Luijten on October 13, 2012

Ahh, with the help of my brother, in exchange for my digital copy, I can finally up my pledge to $140.

Aside from that, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD upload the videos somewhere after they were streamed!
Many people in Europe can't watch them because they have to work, or in my case because my girlfriend from Korea is finally here and I can hardly sit in front of the PC for 4 hours in a day.
      Please!

    11. Creator Gerardo Uribe on October 13, 2012

OMG, Watcher Keep was very long with just 6 levels, i cant imagine 10. That will be insane. That could be a "modern" game for itself.

    12. Creator David Ross Watson on October 13, 2012

      That's exactly right Dime.

    13. Creator Ash Meredith on October 13, 2012

Dungeon crawl ten levels would be awesome

    14. Creator Dime on October 13, 2012

Couldn't help noticing that Obsidian Facebook reached 20k likes. Doesn't that bump the Endless path down to 8 levels and make 60k supporters 9 levels?

    15. Creator Andrew Metcalf on October 13, 2012

Just spitballing, but I think it'd be a fresh take to add an insectoid race to the game. Just to shy away from the D&D style races. Maybe as a goal between 3 and 3.5?

    16. Creator Rince on October 13, 2012

I have to agree with John Berry - something between 140 and 250$ for the physical layer would be great!

    17. Creator Johnathan Tan on October 13, 2012

      More stretch goals please!

    18. Creator Ash Meredith on October 13, 2012

Dungeon crawl ten levels would be awesome

    19. Creator John Berry on October 12, 2012

A huge part of me wishes there was a physical tier somewhere in between 140 and 250. I want Wasteland and the first expansion, but I also want the collectors edition (Mainly for that cloth map... Oh that map...) I wish there was like a 200 tier or something.

    20. Creator Zombra on October 12, 2012

As long as the first level of the dungeon is pretty awesome, and each succeeding level is twice as awesome as the one before it, I'm looking forward to it.

    21. Creator Song Kim on October 12, 2012

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not really interested in level after level of a dungeon. I'd rather have deeper dialogue, more characters, more music/art, or non-combat stuff.

    22. Creator nin on October 12, 2012

Thank you to PanzerID and Foxfire for answering my question! :)

    23. Creator September Abraxas on October 12, 2012

The inclusion of Ziets as a stretch goal makes me want to reduce the amount I've donated. I do not admire his work. I do not think his writing is of compelling quality.

    24. Creator Rivfader on October 12, 2012

Man that old monk is nice!!!!

    25. Creator Gerardo Uribe on October 12, 2012

Yeah!, Forton looks great. I love everything they have done until now!

    26. Creator Massimo Cesario on October 12, 2012

Upped my pledge, but there is no italian support yet :-(

    27. Creator Foxfire on October 12, 2012

For anyone wanting to donate more for extra's, you up your pledge so it's the total of everything you want.

When the kickstarter ends you'll get an email that asks how you want to allocate your funds. So if you wanted a digital game and audio book, you'd pledge at $25, then update your pledge with an extra $20. At the end you'll get a survey and you say you want a copy of the game and the audio book. It's pretty straightforward.

Also who's going to be doing the reading of the book? If it was James Masters, or Christopher Ecclestein, maybe Stephen Fry or Seth Green!

Oh sweet jesus the fiancee` comes in with a winner. Can we get Duke Nukem to read it! Please pretty please. If you get him on board I'd buy two copies! (lit: I'd buy one, but I'd buy it so fast it felt like you'd sold two copies).

    28. Creator S.D. on October 12, 2012

@Gatt: Most of those non-competes don't really hold up in court in the state of California, though, and more so for employees in Bioware's office in Canada. Not that I'm explicitly endorsing such poaching, but it is done in the industry, and is almost entirely down to how much the company on the receiving end of the employee is willing (and able) to go to bat for you. A big company like EA can grab onto and rattle a small studio pretty hard, even if it's in the wrong.

    29. Creator Ryan Richey on October 12, 2012

Hit 20,000 likes! I'm excited for the endless dungeon!

    30. Creator Marceror on October 12, 2012

Darren from Obsidian apologized in the main comments section, and invited me back next week for a tour if I so desire. :)

    31. Creator Philipp Struchtrup on October 12, 2012

Ok, I just had to up my pledge. I trust in you guys. Really need that old school box edition!

    32. Creator Brian Schweizer on October 12, 2012

Question about the novella mentioned. Is it the same one that's depicted as a digital download in all the $50 and up tiers' picture, or is it a new/different one?

    33. Creator David on October 12, 2012

Upped my pledge by 20! Please, take good care of our money. Keep on pledging, people!

    34. Creator Kira on October 12, 2012

Does that symbol on the monk abs look like the Neverwinter Night symbol to anyone?

    35. Creator Galanthein on October 12, 2012

Ali, seems pretty clear to me, in the update, that they talk about real offices.

Maybe they meant something else, but if that so, they should have said something else :-)

However, Marceror, i would not have tried it even if i was a neighboor as it seems obvious that it was not serious ;)

    36. Creator H on October 12, 2012

Guys, they were talking about the LiveStream. http://www.ustream.tv/channel/project-eternity-live-stream
      Closes in 20 minutes.

    37. Creator Tom the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Launcelot on October 12, 2012

Marceror, are you literally implying that this literally happened to you today? :)

I was definitely wondering about that as well, since I live in the same town as their offices.

    38. Creator Marceror on October 12, 2012

DO NOT GO TO THE OBSIDIAN OFFICE!!

In spite of this statement: "First, crowdfunding and Kickstarter has allowed us to OPEN UP OUR DOORS our doors to you, LITERALLY. TODAY you can spend a few hours with me at the Obsidian Office, and you will get an inside look into a development studio."

The only things that will literally happen if you show up, is that the doors will literally be closed and they will literally turn you away. Leaving you not-literally feeling like an ass.

I guess this is my mistake for paying such close attention to their posts. Please, don't make the mistake of taking them up on this offer. They didn't mean it this time.

    39. Creator HunterQC on October 12, 2012

      OBSIDIAN ENTERTAINMENT IS AWESOME !
Make my dream come true .

    40. Creator Wojciech on October 12, 2012

IWD2 stream is great idea, I think I will also reinstall it since it's the only Infinity game I never finished.

    41. Creator PanzerID on October 12, 2012

@Tim Fitzpatrick & @John Simms and anyone else confused by the add-ons

"As a quick tutorial on how to add add-ons, goto the Project Eternity site on Kickstarter and then hit the Manage Your Pledge button. The reward tier you had already selected will still be selected and the amount will be in the big box at the top. All you need to do is add the dollar amount that covers the add-ons you would like to your pledge and enter the new total number. For instance, if you are at the $35 Pledge level and want to add one Digital Download, you would enter $60 as your total pledge.

After the Kickstarter campaign is over, we will send you a survey that will let you explain how you wanted to additional money pledged should be used."

    42. Creator Rukadono on October 12, 2012

      I hope so too!

    43. Creator Pierre, Endless Paths guide of the ∞ on October 12, 2012

I hope those streams will be save so that I can watch them later.

    44. Creator Rukadono on October 12, 2012

Oh great, deleted some words, I wasn pointing out at the perspective of the first bridge :P

    45. Creator Rukadono on October 12, 2012

Hello everyone! I've been following kickstarter for a while now but never backed a project before, this is my first.
I'm very excited about pretty much everything happening here. Obsidian guys, thank you, you're great!
The project is wonderful and looks epic too.

But (and i really say this because i like you and I really want you to do your best) while the background screenshot you show in the previous update is clearly breathtaking, it also has some little issues about Also, the two parts of the broken bridge feel...disconnected...like if the bridge could never have been complete.

Well maybe I'm just too excited and anxious hahaha Just keep up the great work! Looking forward to the stream!

PS: Sorry for the possible mistakes, english is not my mothertongue :P
PPS: Can't wait to play a title like this...i mean...can you believe it???

    46. Creator Randy Snow on October 12, 2012

Really digging the monk looks. Has a nice feel to it, not overly Asian like some monk styles.

Its sort of like a Friar who can kick some ass.

    47. Creator H on October 12, 2012

David Carradine is a perfect monk.

    48. Creator Tim Fitzpatrick on October 12, 2012

Like John, I want to add an extra, but there is nothing on the "Manage your pledge" page that lets me do that apart from the pledge amount box and, therefore, no way to state what extras I want. Am I missing something?

    49. Creator nin on October 12, 2012

(Apparently posted in the wrong update, sorry) Goofy question: If we want to pledge more for extra goodies, how do we denote what the funds go towards? Some of the add-ons are the same price. Thanks!

    50. Creator Alexandre on October 12, 2012

Hi guys, I've just joined up! I've been waiting for a new game of this type for such a long time!

I'm extremely excited by this project (and have certainly pledged much more than I should have, but I want to give this a real chance :D)!
