Hey everyone, there's exactly one more week left in the Kickstarter, and we are going to be kicking it up with bigger and better updates every day!

New Add-ons and Rewards

We were looking at the $140 tier and thought it needed something more, so we decided to throw a Project Eternity Mouse Pad into the Collector's Edition. The mouse pad features the painting from Kiernan Yanner. You can also add-on additional mouse pads at any physical tier for $15.

$140 Reward Tier and Above (excludes the digital only $165 tier) - Now includes a Project Eternity Mouse Pad.
Project Eternity Mouse Pad Add-On - $15 each*

Also we've been asked if we are going to have more physical rewards and add-ons, and we are listening. Today, we are announcing new t-shirt add-ons for you:

Obsidian T-Shirt Add-On - $25 each*
Project Eternity T-Shirt Add-On - $25 each*

For more information on how to add-on rewards, please see Update #4. Sizes will be asked during the survey that will be sent to you after the end of the Kickstarter.

*You must be at a physical goods reward tier to add on any additional physical add-ons.

New Stretch Goals for $2.7m and $2.8m

We are happy to announce two more classes for the 2.7m stretch goal. With your pledges we now have Barbarians and Ciphers as playable classes, and now we would like to add Paladins and Chanters to round out our class selection for Project Eternity, bringing the class total to 11.

Paladins are extremely devoted, often fanatical, soldiers who have pledged themselves to a chosen cause, combining the zeal of a priest with the ascetic discipline of a monk. They have founded many elite fighting forces, from the original Darcozzi Paladini, a two thousand year-old order of palace guards, to the fledgling Fellows of St. Waidwen Martyr, zealous defenders of the Godhammer pilgrim trail. Often found at the vanguard of many conflicts, paladins are natural leaders and have the ability to quickly assist their allies with targeted commands. A paladin's commands can stave off impending death, overcome fatigue, or hasten the charge to close breached defenses. And though they are not always pledged to the service of a god or gods, paladins are so singularly focused on their chosen cause that their souls are continually creating a wellspring of spiritual energy from which they can blast groups of foes in their immediate vicinity. Despite their often stoic presence and explosive combat style, paladins work best alongside allies. When isolated, they can be vulnerable, especially against singular powerful foes.

Chanters can be found in almost any culture, but are most often seen in communities with a strong oral tradition. They are repositories of folk knowledge and common wisdom, tellers of tall tales and hallowed legends. Though chanters have a bit of minor talent in traditional arts of combat and soul-based magic, their true power lies in their chants. Chanters construct chants from individual iconic phrases and rhyming couplets they have memorized from hundreds of stories and poems, creating a chain of magical effects that plays out over time. While chanters do use the power of their souls to work their magic, chants are exhortations to the unconscious memory of wayward souls and the diffused spiritual energy of the world. That is, ambient spirits respond to the evocation of ancient, common story elements and play their part in reconstructing the chanter's tales. While a chanter's magic may seem modest compared to that of a wizard or a priest, chanters are able to recite their chants while occupied with other activities, making them extremely versatile.

It’s our pleasure to introduce our next stretch goal of George Ziets at $2.8m – with your help, we’ll be able to enlist the skills of George Ziets in shaping Project Eternity. For those not familiar with George’s work, he was the creative lead and core writer behind the acclaimed Mask of the Betrayer - the first expansion pack for Neverwinter Nights 2. George leant his talents to many of Obsidian’s other games including Fallout: New Vegas.

George is gifted in designing lore, levels, and companions for role-playing games, and Baldur’s Gate 2 is one of his favorite titles. His impact can be felt in Mask of the Betrayer, and the character concepts, story, and his narrative decisions to take a disused section of the Forgotten Realms and use it as a backdrop to weave a fascinating story is testament to his design skills. We’ve given him the rundown of Project Eternity, and he’s eager to help shape the lore, design areas, and bring the characters in the world to life.

More DUNGEON!

Yesterday Project Eternity hit 55,000 backers! Everyone loves bigger dungeons, and The Endless Paths Mega Dungeon is now 5 levels deep. We will add another level at 57,500 backers and another level if we get to 20,000 Likes on Facebook.

Don't miss the update on Thursday - Josh will be talking lore, and our first screenshot will be revealed. Everyone at the studio is really excited to show you what we've been working on.

Lastly, if you haven't checked out the Wasteland 2 Store that opened yesterday - head on over here. You are still able to donate money towards Wasteland 2 to make it bigger and better!

FORUMS: Discuss Paladins, Chanters, George, and the rest of Update #18 in our Forums.

$60k a year is what most Bachelor's degree holders look for in a job when they first get out of college. Ziets has a Master's and he's had it for a while and he's been in the industry for a over a decade. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Ziets) For him, $100k for 18 months is a pay cut more than likely. Talented writers are paided a premium.

Creator dynamomark on October 10, 2012

@sedrefungeras, assuming George Ziet's compensation is really going to be $100K for 18 months, you have to take into account all the costs involved of having an additional person working with/for you.

      @sedrefungeras
Let's say for arguements sake that the $100,000 WAS to pay for 1 person's salary for 18 months of work.
That comes to around a $67k salary. Here's some reference for what game developers are paid on average.

      http://gamasutra.com/view/news/167355/Game_Developer_reveals_2011_Game_Industry_Salary_Survey_results.php

Gamasutra puts out a yearly Game Industry Salary Survey, and even by the standards of several years ago, $67k is less than the average starting programmer's or designer's salary. I can tell you from personal experience, game developers are underpaid for the level of work and effort we put in. Marriages suffer, social lives fall to the way side, some put their own health at risk with the hours put in.

I didn't mean to sound hostile, but the "How much money do you guys need to live your life anyway????!!!" line got to me. Feeding families and paying bills/mortgages is no small feet these days.

@Dormin The money raised for the stretch goals doesn't all go to the development of that stretch goal. Any additional funds that we raise will be used to have additional people work on the project, such as area designers, programmers, and artists. All of these fine people will make the game's story larger and improves the quality of the game.

(Though the answer to your question was pretty evident)

Creator meganothing dread hamster of torment on October 10, 2012

@Alex As far as I have heard the expansion is not for kickstarter, but should be financed by the normal sales they get for PE. And as for the budget of PE, that is practically determined by now. Sure, another $100k will always provide for another writer or graphics guy to add a few more quests and another small area, but you can be sure that the main game+main quest would have been financed by the 1,1M of the first goal, otherwise Obsidian would have been dishonest with us.

Independent game makers start sometimes with no budget at all, take their time and keep the tech behind the game simple, that's why you get so many 2D side scrollers there. So how much money you need depends very much on how much effort you put in expensive features like graphics and voice-acting. Keep it simple and you also keep it inexpensive

I was impressed when I heard that the original Fallout was made for just 3 Mio. With programming of an engine and all I think. So with a relatively cheap engine already in hand, 15 people planned to work on it, no voice acting and other expensive stuff planned it sounds doable. Especially since inXile with their wasteland2 found very much the same numbers.

    15. Missing_small

Creator Marcin Baran on October 10, 2012

@Alex: from what they clearly said none of the gathered money will go to the expansion and it will be solely funded with other incomes (including the games sale). They also said that the expansion will be released 6 months after the game? That doesn'e sound at least to me as if they were planning to properly start working on it (maybe except some rough idea) before the game is fully made and released. And with the whole base and programming for the game at hand creating the new content for the proper full scale expansion (not a crappy DLC that we're being served everywhere now) won't take as much time as making the game itself. I agree that talking about the expansion before the game is made and seeing how it worked out might be a bit premature, but I'm glad to know that it is planned and if I'll like the game I will be able to continue the story later on. Anyway we'll see how it'll work out. Personally I'm not planniing to jump for the 160$ tier as it's way too much for my taste but if the expansion was offered as an add-on for about 10-15$ just to gather more money to make the basic Kickstarter funded game bigger and better I wouldn't mind to chip in.

    16. Missing_small

Creator Alex Cooksey on October 10, 2012

@meganothing No I'm sure there'll be expansions, as I'm equally sure there'll be a great game. I just think it's rather presumptuous to start making expansions before you know what the budget is for the game you're trying to get started. The only way they would start talking about expansions is if they have the full budget for this game sewn up. $2.5m (less 10%) doesn't seem all that much for a game of the scale they're trying to make.

Concentrate on making a game first, and if it's as good as we're all hoping, I'll back the kickstarter for the expansion (I which I hope they won't need) or just buy it.

    17. Img_0633.small

Creator meganothing dread hamster of torment on October 10, 2012

@Alex Did you really think they wouldn't do an expansion after the game? Look at the precedence. Each and every one of the old RPGs did get an expansion. If your fear is they could do less in the main game and put it into the expansion, that is something they could do without an expansion as well. Just drop a few areas, nobody will ever know.

    18. Missing_small

Creator Alex Cooksey on October 10, 2012

No official word / retraction on the expansion then?
How I read it is that they are saying they have enough money for the game now, and despite their history with fairly buggy games, they've opted for creating an expansion rather than getting a full game together that works as intended. Fair enough, thinks I - I didn't really want any of the other content above the game - just more stuff to own and clutter the place up. I had wanted a T-shirt but with less than a week to go there aren't any designs to look at, so I won't take the risk thanks.

I've reduced from $120 (inc international shipping) back to $25 for the bit I actually want (and if seeing the numbers move yesterday is anything to judge on I'm a long way from being the only one). I may well re-instate or choose a bigger tier, but only if this expansion nonsense is shelved for the moment in favour of creating the game under discussion, and creating it with a strong QA approach.

It's a pity really - I don't particularly want the stuff that gets me to the $100 tier - I just wanted to help some great game designers, who I genuinely believe will make a very good game. I just found the $165 tier an insult to my intelligence and my wallet. and have retracted accordingly.

Europeans atleast do have a good understanding of English and should be able to play in that language. Also a lot of the more subtle jokes/meanings etc gets 'Lost in translation'
Consentrate on Content, could maby have a separate funding for translation, so people pay for it if they want/need it. And we other can get more game for our bucks.

They already said that they are not financing their expansion through KS. So basically it will be funded through post-release sales and the expansion's profits will gointo Obsidian's coffers which will allow them to grow even more. All the money they get here - are going towards the original game. Asking for a near-free giveaway of the expansion for everyone on KS is just plain stupid. You really don't think that you will accumulate 20-25 $ before 2014 to support a good game?

And about the classes - now we have all core ones. Would be rad to see some prestige classes in the expansion.

Good to hear that Obsidian. The stretch goal structure of these game Kickstarters just doesn't seem to be transparent on exactly how the additional money makes the game better. I guess that's why your awesome credentials pulled in so much - trust!

From an article on Rock Paper Shotgun:
      http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/10/08/12-people-havent-backed-project-eternity-yet/

"PE sounds ace, and I’m glad for Obisidan. But I kind of wish we could just get earnest, simple promises to make Kickstarter games better, longer or hire more staff as the money rolls in rather than this stretch goals and partitioning of features culture. There’s something unnatural about it, maybe even a bit cynical, though I do appreciate the need for self-promotion when ostensibly going it alone."

Good to hear that additional money goes to everything, and not just one specific stretch goal though.

Yeah I agree, enough with the classes already. Thanks for all of them but lets spend some attention on fleshing out the story, the lore and the setting. Could we have a stretch goal of adding more writers for witty dialogue. Both for quest or just for NPCs.

    42. 1.small

Creator Dormin on October 9, 2012

      @Obsidian
Personally I feel that you should switch around these two goals, I'd rather have the money go into getting Ziets in on the game than oversaturateing the game with more classes, I mean for heavens sake we already have 9 and that already feels like too many. In my opinion having a stretch goal to get Ziets on this is a good start but at this point I want to see stretch goals where if you get another $100,000 you hire more voice actors, artists, programmers, ect to work on Project Eternity, or even other things that will improve the game on a broad scale, like hiring more writers to flesh out your lore, adding more regions, dimensions (like the elemental chaos in DnD), and quests to the game.

The main point I'm trying to make is that having a stretch goal to add more classes seems like a very poor use of money when you could instead use it to add more polish to the main game. I would like to end this saying that I have the utmost respect for Obsidian Entertainment and that this comment is just expressing my opinions and concerns. I in no way claim to have experience in designing video games or programming in general. I very much still look forward to this game that I know you all are putting your hearts and souls into.
