The White March - Part I

Posted by Obsidian Entertainment (Creator)

Update by Brandon Adler, Lead Producer

Hey, everyone. I have some exciting news for you today. The White March, the expansion for Pillars of Eternity, has released its first part and you can find it on Steam, GOG, and Origin. In this update we will explain how to redeem your rewards from the Backer Portal and show you some of the cool companions, areas, and features from the expansion.

Let's not waste any time.

The White March - Part I

Obsidian has released the first half of the Pillars of Eternity expansion, The White March! It is now available on Steam, GOG, and Origin.

For those of you that may not know a lot about our expansion, let me talk about some of the details and highlights:

  • The White March - Part I takes place in the harsh, frozen frontiers north of the Dyrwood. Word of Durgan's Battery and its buried treasures (including Durgan's Steel) has made its way back to the Watcher of Caed Nua.
  • We have two new companions in the expansion:
    • Zahua, a scarred, drug-addicted monk who thinks pain is the true path to enlightenment.
    • The Devil of Caroc, a construct with the soul of a murderer infused inside.
  • The expansion adds in a special class of items called soulbound weapons. These weapons have powerful (and unique) enchantments that become more powerful as their wielder levels up.
  • You can now set your companions to use AI so you don't have to spend as much time managing their actions. Each class has special AI packages that are unique to those classes and we will be added in additional AI packages in the future. The AI for enemies has also been improved.
  • Party members can now go into individual stealth. This allows some part members to be stealthed while other members are not. This is particularly useful in positioning party members for upcoming battles or sneaking by small groups of enemies.
  • You may now retrain your party members to modify their attributes, skills, and abilities. Now you can try out new builds quickly and easily.

Redeeming the Expansion

Note: The expansion is not part of the Hero, Champion, or Royal bundles. The expansion was part of Kickstarter tiers at $165 and above. If you are a backer, but did not get the expansion bundled in your tier you will have to purchase it from Steam or GOG seperately.

We have now released Steam and GOG keys to all qualifying backers on the Backer Portal.

If the expansion was a part of your Kickstarter tier or if you purchased it as a separate add-on, you can redeem your game and get your key just like any other reward on our Backer Portal.

You can find the specific redemption instructions here under the "Steps to Redeem Your Items" section.

DRKN Clothing

Over the past few months Obsidian has been working with DRKN, a premiere clothing manufacturer, to come up with some cool pieces of clothing that takes inspiration from Pillars of Eternity. We are happy to announce that they have finished their first few pieces and you'll get the first crack at them.

In addition to high-quality clothing, you also get a digital copy of the Campaign Almanac with your purchase.

What are you waiting for? You can get your Pillars-inspired clothing here.

PAX Panel

If any of you are headed to PAX Prime this weekend, you should stop by the Hydra Theater at 3:00 PM on Saturday to catch our Pillars of Eternity retrospective panel. It's going to be filled with stories about our successes, our failures, and how it is shaping our future development. Also, we will give a sneak peek into our thoughts for future Pillars of Eternity products.

That's it for now. Have fun exploring the harsh wilderness of The White March!

Yeah, would be great to know how it's been handled with the DVD version

Just a word of warning. If you're like me and you only play a game like this once. Don't buy the DLC if you don't have a save game before the last ACT of the game then realize that you will have to start over to access the White March. Instead of just letting you import your characters from the start or have the DLC begin after the boss fight its done in such a way that punishes everyone who already played the game in full. The fact that there's a play setting that allows only one save. Isn't this a middle finger to everyone who was hardcore enough to do that. I just understand... It's craziness: Human sacrifice! Dogs and cats living together! Mass hysteria! but seriously its a real dick move by the devs.

... Uhm what exactly does that mean?
"The expansion was part of Kickstarter tiers at $165 and above."

I've the Signed collectors Edition(250)$ and didn't have seen anything.
Am I just blind/have to update to newest (gog) version? ^^

      Now to the relevant part:
Expansion yess can't wait till I've some more free time to play further than the ~50% I'm now.
Soulbound-weapons and retrain your party members (by alcohol?^^) seems pretty interesting.

Will there be a patch 2.0 for the dvd version? Or I guess the question is more when?
And will it be possible to get the expansion for the dvd version?

    5. Greg "Scorpio" Myers

Please tell me that there will be another lovely hardback strategy guide made for this expansion. I bought the first one and absolutely love it! It would look great on the shelf too!

@Stephen yeah, as I paid 160 usd to get stuff which weren't delivered in the end, and as I watch a video where the CEO said it would be availlable to all backer, I hoped we would ALL get the first part, and the other would get the 2nd for free (or already paid)

    7. Logan on

Sweet! I am still wrapping up a few other games and then off to start PoE, so I'll be eyeing that White Marsh soon

Oooh, nice! I still haven't gotten very far in the game, admittedly (it really chugs on my out of date system), but I've loved what I could play and I'm already tempted to grab the expansion!

    9. Céline .S. Sauvé on

What items were patched onto the base game?

    10. Stephen "Stoibs" D

This was a paid add-on during the campaign, it's not going to be given for free - or if it was I would expect a refund on the extra I backed at..

Anyway, yeah. Between Shadowrun Hong Kong that I'm still working through and Phantom pain coming out next week it probably wasn't the best release time for me, eh. I'll get around to it at some point I guess.

These shirts are pretty sick. Stoked about all of this.

    12. Kennyrules on

Just threw down $25 on steam for the expansion subscription. Because really, let's face it - I was gonna get the next one too. Keep up the great work, Obsidian. Can't wait to play the expansion!

    13. Jeremie Lariviere

Very cool, looking forward to buying and playing this too!

    14. Saber-Scorpion on

Looking forward to playing it! Also, I really like that artwork of the party around the campfire! Is there a wallpaper size version of that image available somewhere?

    15. Dominique LeStrange on

Wow, half of the comments are complaints. Obsidian, on behalf of all of the (usually) quiet gamers who are thrilled with your current work, you all rock! Thank you for having the passion to make this whole project a reality.

    16. Sir Chaox on

I agree with Michaeljack. Hopefully, madGamer is correct, but this update lumped the information under what you get with the expansion, so that wasn't very clear. Any game expansion for any game should really only contain new content; that includes areas, characters, new skills, new classes, etc. and whatever mechanics derive from them. Things like companion AI, separate stealth, and retraining should be part of a general patch.

Anyway, thanks for working hard on this game still, these additions sound great! When are we gonna see a new Obsidian KS already? :) Would love to see Tim Cain head a project...

    17. madGamer on

@Michaeljack the ai and individual stealth releases with the patch 2.0 so its free for everyone. the expansion is only for the people that bought in Kickstarter campaign or site.

    18. Michaeljack on

Are you guys serious? Companion AI and Individual Stealth are part of the expansion? They are game mechanics and should be part of a Patch!

    19. Grinsevent Wheresluggage of Sin on

Hi there ... You said in one interview that the expension would go to all the backers ... And, I hoped it were true. (I mean, some stuff weren't delivered etc etc... )
I hope we will be kept informed.

    20. Ryan Gadsby

What the hell guys? A week before Metal Gear? You're killin' me.
