Update #10 – Game Over. Continue?
To our friends and backers,
Josh at Off Base here with our final update on our campaign.
The clock has struck the five o’clock hour here on the west coast, and so our Kickstarter campaign to launch the Mercenary Kings Master Codex has ended. We may not have reached our goal this time, but I know I speak for all of us when I say we’ve learned a lot along the way and we’re immensely grateful to so many people for their help and support.
First, I’d like to send out some love to a few of the OBP staff members that worked tirelessly to make get this Kickstarter together. Big thanks to our CEO and CFO, Greg and Sam, for giving the green light to this idea to begin with and helping with everything from finance to legal to logistics along the way. Thank you, Tim Lindquist, for your sage-like advice during the start-up phase. A generous shout out goes to Alberto Penalva for tracking down new print quotes that enabled us to upgrade everyone to hardcover. Thank you, Stacy, for editing my sample chapters. And finally, massive thanks to Brady Hartel for knocking it out of the park with his interior layouts, cover designs, reward mock-ups, and even the cool headers for the Kickstarter page.
Thanks to our contributing artists, Corey Lewis and Kinuko, for creating some truly awesome thumbnail illustrations for our Kickstarter rewards. Coming from a comic book background, I always love seeing other artist’s take on a character and both of these creators really ran with it on the Mercenary Kings Master Codex. I only hope we can work with them again in the near future.
A tip of the hat also goes to the folks at Polygon, Joystiq, Tiny Cartridge, GamesBeat, Strategy Guide Reviews, Nerdophiles, and Cheap Ass Gamers who wrote about our project and helped spread the word.
None of this would have been possible without the consent and unwavering support of the Tribute Games team, and we are humbled and honored by being able to work with such a talented team of creators. Despite being located on opposite ends of a continent each with our own piles of outside responsibilities, cofounders Jean-François Major and Jonathan Lavigne always made themselves available to talk things out, offer thoughtful ideas, approve designs, or provide us art assets. It’s difficult to put into words just how much we appreciate Tribute allowing us the opportunity to play in their world and create something really special for their fans.
Be sure to keep in touch with them by following @TributeGames on Twitter, and pick up Mercenary Kings on Steam if you’ve been waiting. It’s well worth your time; I’ve personally logged over 30 hours in the game since the Kickstarter began and still can’t wait for the final version.
And finally, from the bottom of my heart, thank you to all 298 of our backers. From $1 to $10,000, each one of our contributors was an inspiration that maybe we were not so crazy to try this idea of creating a physical book for a digital-only game. Your kind comments, messages, retweets, Facebook likes, and forum posts put a smile on everyone’s face here at the office and we can’t thank you enough for your support.
So what’s next?
With the initial Kickstarter at an end, we’re going to take some time to let the dust settle and do an internal post-mortem on the project as a whole. As I mentioned, we learned a lot of valuable lessons over the last month and, if we do try again, we want to be sure we’re fully prepared to meet the challenge. Off Base as a whole has plenty on our plates to keep us busy and we’re not going away anytime soon.
As fans of the video game medium, our primary goals for the Mercenary Kings Master Codex were: A) to create a book fans of Tribute Games would love to have on our shelves, and B) hopefully start a line of similar publications for other creative independent titles. The rise of the independent studio has given us a feast of amazing games with passionate fans (including our staff), and we’re really hoping to use our talents to skills to honor these creative studios.
Once we’ve had some time to reflect, Off Base and Tribute will take a hard look at what our options are and best believe if there’s a way to make this happen, we’ll find it. When that time comes I’ll post another update to this Kickstarter before anywhere else so that you, our backers, will be the first to know.
Thank you so much again, and I hope we’ll be in touch soon!
