There are now 6 different Pen Friends to choose from. You can choose from the following:
- Maple mixed with Baltic Birch.
- Walnut mixed with Baltic Birch.
- Yew mixed with Baltic Birch.
The Baltic Birch is a high quality plywood which is a popular choice for contemporary furniture design. The Baltic Birch range has been added to this Kickstarter project half way through the campaign. (I wanted to give all backers this extra choice).
The Pen Friend's simple, elegant design suits all types of settings. They are held firmly in place with 2 strong magnets and they fit all pens up to 12mm in diameter.
The photo below shows a chunkier pen in the Walnut Pen Friend. The hole diameter and depth allows for both slim and chunky pens. The slim pens don't rattle around and the bigger pens still fit in. Pens up to 12mm in diameter slide in and out easily. I found that this covers almost all pens.
The Pen Friend weighs roughly 25 grams. Its dimensions are approximately 70mm x 34mm x 20mm.
The Design Process
When I first thought about the possibility of designing a wooden, magnetic pen holder, I thought it was too obvious. But the more I thought about it, the more I liked it. It ticked all the relevant boxes. It is:
- A product that would last for years and years.
- Aesthetically pleasing.
- Has real purpose, real value; a real use.
Like many products, the design possibilities seemed endless. I started sketching possible shapes and playing in the workshop to try and get a feel for what I felt would work and look nice.
The following image shows some sketches of possible designs. Whilst they certainly aren't going to win any illustration prizes, I find this kind of wild doodling really helpful in figuring out the design on which to spend more time.
I then needed to test a few things such as the hole diameter and depth. I also tried various shapes to help me hone in on a chosen design.
Once I had an idea of the chosen design I then made a 3D model. Designing in 3D forces me to decide actual dimensions and gives me a good understanding of the product layout.
The Oak Tree Workshop
The Oak Tree Workshop is a new business that I founded in 2013. I am hoping to use Kickstarter to raise funding to help progress The Oak Tree Workshop to be the company I envisage.
The ethos of my company is to design quality products that people truly value. I also plan to design products that I personally like. I think designing products that I myself would like to own leads to a better design. A better product.
I've chosen to start The Oak Tree Workshop with relatively small products, such as Pen Friend. Because starting a business has many challenges, I wanted to start off by keeping things simple. Another reason I wanted to have a range of small products is to make full use of my stock. Having smaller products allows me to make good use of off-cuts when making larger products in the future. Waste is obviously economically and environmentally bad.
The Oak Tree Workshop is a new business. The workshop is already up and running but the business needs to be developed in all areas. With successful Kickstarter funding for my first products, I'll be able to continue upgrading the workshop.
Your support in backing this project will help me create a business that I am truly passionate about and of which I am proud. I have chosen a low funding amount as it all helps, but hopefully it will be enough to give it that Kickstart!
Late July 2014 / Early August 2014 - Kickstarter campaign.
Late August - Hopefully receive funding!
Early September - 1st batch of 100 Pen Friends dispatched.
Late September - 2nd batch of 100 Pen Friends dispatched.
October onwards - This depends on the success of the Kickstarter campaign. Approximately another 100 Pen Friends dispatched per week.
Social Media Help!
The Oak Tree Workshop needs your support. If you like the sound of my business and its products, please help with spreading the word through Facebook, Google+ and Twitter etc.
Thank you for taking the time to check out my Kickstarter campaign. One of my favourite things about a Kickstarter campaign is engaging with the Kickstarter community. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the project and I hope you think it's a project worth backing!
Thank you again
Risks and challenges
I am not relying on any other organisations in order to complete this project. I have all the necessary equipment and experience to manufacture and deliver this product. As with all new products, production time is a questionable factor but I can promise that quality for this product is the priority and this will not be compromised. My production timeline projections have been calculated with all relevant factors considered and I am happy with the estimated delivery date offered to all backers of this project. I have already had 2 successful Kickstarter campaigns with very positive feedback from backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
