It’s time to go to school … for wizards! Can you charm your way to the top of the class, avoid the hexes of your rivals, and capture the First House Cup? 

House Rivalry is a competitive card game for 2-5 players that transports you to the start of the semester at New World Magischola, North America’s premier college of wizardry. Start your journey by selecting a unique character, and choose your House. Then set out to complete your studies by attending class, casting spells, fighting monsters, and competing against rival students for the glory of the First House Cup!

To win the game, finish your courses and clubs, use magic to your advantage, and avoid the hexes of your rivals to gain the most House Points and the glory of the Trophy!

In House Rivalry, you’ll navigate the challenges that await each turn of the card as well as the ambitions of your fellow students. After all, only one player can be crowned House Cup Champion. Will it be you?

 

House Rivalry is a turn-based, resource management, tableau-building game that uses simultaneous selection, variable player powers, and "take that" mechanics as you weave your strategy to advance your studies, and leap ahead of your rival Houses.

House Rivalry is played in a series of rounds. Each round you choose one of three actions to advance your studies and trip up your rivals:

  • Enroll: to take more courses or clubs 
  • Study: to advance your grade & time in your courses & clubs 
  • Conjure: use one of the spells or magical items in your hand to help yourself or thwart your rivals

A Wolf by Any Other Name is a collaborative improvisational party game about magic school students in detention on the night of the full moon.

Number of participants: 1 facilitator/detention monitor and 6-25 players
Time to Play: Approximately 2 hours.
Space Needed: Enough room for every player to have a place to sit and study, plus extra corners to meet, perform rituals, get mauled by werewolves, etc. A normal classroom or rec room is perfect.

Help us spread the word about House Rivalry! On your social media (Facebook, Twitter (@nwmagischola), Instagram (@newworldmagischola), or Tumblr (@magimundi), post a quick video of yourself (or your character) confessing what you did at Magischola to land yourself in detention!  

Post a link to the Kickstarter, too, then send an email with the link to your post with the video to contests@magischola.com. The winner of the most outrageous magical mishap will have their character name and dastardly deed immortalized on the "Detention" card in the game!  

Did you release a minotaur on campus? Turn your best friend into a squonk? Gasp ... cheat on your Magical Ethics exam? Confess and you could win (and you help us make the game a reality!)

So what motivated us to create this game? In 2013, lead designer Dylan Grey wanted to create a wizard school board game that had the feel of actually going to wizard school, not just being a wizard. In 2016, he attended New World Magischola, a real-life wizard school in the USA. People loved NWM, and wanted to take the fun experience of attending wizard school back to their homes. Dylan had a prototype of a wizard school game. We took them both to the alchemy lab and through careful spellcrafting, artificery, and more than a few rounds of cursebreaking, New World Magischola House Rivalry was born.

We tested it. And tested it. And tweaked it, and tested it. Hundreds of people (not just our friends!) played it and gave us the brutal truth. And now we've got a well-balanced, streamlined, whimsical, and fun game that appeals to both casual gamers and is a great lighter interlude for those who are more hard-core.

Besides being the neat and nerdy magical fiction featured in House Rivalry, NWM is an actual wizard school that you (yes, in this reality) can attend. Really, you can put on a robe, grab a wand, and go to wizard college, where you’ll be sorted into one of our five Houses, attend classes, and go on exciting magical adventures with your classmates. Over 1000 people have now attended New World Magischola, some of them graduating with their degree as Wizard! You might think that’s kinda crazy, but we thought it was crazier that North American *didn’t* have its own school of magic. One of our reward tiers gets you two tickets to a 2018 New World Magischola live wizard school event, along with the House Rivalry game, of course.


So put on your robe and prepare to enter a magical universe full of creatures, artifacts, spells, and secrets where you play to be recognized as the best wizard at school.

Risks and challenges

We have taken many steps to mitigate risks and ensure the success of this project. We have self-funded a prototype, paid the artists, and have been playtesting and working on the game development for over a year. All that's left is actually producing the final version of the game. Admittedly, this is a big step. The logistics of printing a board game can be expensive and complicated, and there are risks. However, we have extensive experience working with production vendors and we are committed to bringing the best possible game to you and your friends. We've also run 5 Kickstarter campaigns, each of which has been successful (and is fulfilled or in the process of being fulfilled), so that gives you some measure of trust in our ability to not only execute a campaign but fulfill it.

We also promise that if something should go awry in the production phase, we will communicate with you promptly! There's nothing worse than waiting and wondering with no information, and we guarantee that won't happen here. There will be Kickstarter Updates so you can share in the excitement as the game gets closer to being in your hands.

Please note that the final look, materials, and content of the rewards may differ from what was presented on the Kickstarter project.

Please be sure to log in and confirm your pledge after you receive our notification email. If you do not log in and confirm your pledge within 8 weeks of our notification via email to confirm your pledge, you agree that we have fulfilled our obligations to you in full for payment or donations received. However, we may, at our discretion, refund or ship your pledge if you contact us and confirm your pledge after the 8-week window has elapsed. Unconfirmed pledges make it difficult for us to plan production and logistics, and can lead to project delays, and we don't want to see that happen.

If you confirm your pledge within 8 weeks of our notification via email, you agree that our responsibility to you is to ship your order as entered into our pledge manager system, that title and risk passes to you upon delivery to a common carrier for such shipment, and that you are responsible for import or any other duties that may be payable to the relevant tax authorities, providing correct address information, and ensuring this address is deliverable by normal methods. We are unable to ship to PO Boxes. We are working with regional worldwide fulfillment centers, and we do not anticipate any customs or duty fees for our backers, but laws may change and individual circumstances may vary.
