The original idea for the SmartUV camera came up when we developed our stretch goals for our 2016 Kickstarter campaign on the Nurugo Micro product. We had the idea to develop a complete new UV Lamp concept as our final stretch goal that would allow you to use our smartphone to see into the UV spectrum. With the Nurugo Micro we gave your smartphone the ability to see really small things that were invisible to the naked eye, and now the SmartUV makes your smartphone able to see into the invisible UV spectrum too!

Medical research shows that early detection and prevention is the most effective ways to maintain great skin health - but because sun damage takes a long time to develop before it becomes visible very few of us realise that we may have a problem. This makes us think that we are somehow not affected by the sun, because the skin we see in the mirror everyday looks great! However, if you look at your skin in UV light, you can see past the outer layer and the skin irregularities that are hidden are suddenly revealed. Even if your skin looks perfect in normal light, UV light is able to reveal a surprising picture of what is actually happening. It’s really amazing how people react when they realise their own skin is actually being affected by the sun - and how they instantly want to do something about it! By regularly inspecting your skin in UV light with the SmartUV you are able to track skin irregularities and identify changes (from changes in shape, intensity and size) that could indicate skin health risks while it’s still invisible to the naked eye long before they develop to critical stages. This empowers you to take pro-active action by going to a qualified medical skin professional for a diagnosis and get the right treatment.

The SmartUV is intended for everyone that is concerned about the impact of sun damage on their skin - as long as they have a smartphone. Skin health professionals like dermatologists and clinicians will be able to use the SmartUV when diagnosing patients and teaching them about their skin health, parents can use it to teach their family about skin health and everyone can use it to monitor their skin for irregularities and the efficiency of your sunblock and how well it was applied.
We anticipate that the most frequent daily use of the SmartUV will be to measure protection against sun damage by showing you the answer to the following three questions:
1. Is your current skin care effectively protecting you by blocking the sun’s harmful UV rays?
2. Have you correctly applied or covered your skin with an effective sunblock product?
3. Is the product you’ve applied still blocking harmful UV rays a few hours AFTER it was applied?Last updated:
