About this project
The SmartUV lets you discover a whole new world by capturing it in the invisible UV spectrum. With this innovative UV smartphone technology, you can instantly share your discoveries, and use it to test product claims and make better decisions about your, and your family’s, skin. We call this, seeing smart to be smart.
What exactly is the SmartUV?
The SmartUV is a connectable UV camera for smartphones that captures the world in UV light and displays it as a video or picture on your phone screen via the SmartUV App. UV light doesn’t have color as it sits outside the visible light spectrum, which explains why the images are in black and white. White shows where UV light is reflected, and black shows where it is absorbed or blocked.
The SmartUV is very easy to use. It simply requires you to download the correct app for your smartphone before plugging the device in by using the connector.
Once the campaign closes, backers will be sent an email survey asking them to select your variant and color preferences to work with your phone.
We are excited to announce our stretch goals for the campaign. Goals include smartphone stands, app updates and a portable UV lamp, all of which allow you to better explore the world in UV.
Goal #1 @ $ 100,000:
A smartphone stand that enables you to use your SmartUV as a desktop UV mirror.
Goal #2 @ $ 150,000:
An exciting update to the SmartUV app that will include a Sun Safety Diary to evaluate risk profiles, provide notifications of high UV exposure days and reminders to regularly check your skin to track sun damage.
Goal #3 @ $ 180,000:
A handy UV lamp, so you can literally use it anywhere.
What does the SmartUV do?
The SmartUV lets you see into the UV light spectrum – which is completely invisible to the naked eye. By seeing into the UV spectrum, you are able to discover a whole new, previously unexplored world. The SmartUV has many uses that let you test product claims with accuracy and allow you to see yourself and your skin in a whole new light.
Are your UV protection products actually working?
With the SmartUV you can put spectacles, window tints, and UV skin products – such as sunblock and SPF skincare – to the test to see if they actually do what they claim.
In UV light, UV blocking materials show up black, so it's easy to spot when something is protecting you from harmful rays or not. One of the amazing things you will discover is that even when old and new paint has been matched perfectly and looks identical in visible light, they actually have different densities that is easily revealed with the SmartUV under UV light! That means you can spot where a car panel has been resprayed (indicating accident repairs on a second hand vehicle) or if a room has recently been painted – compared to the rest of the building.
Unlike other UV imaging solutions, the SmartUV’s small size attaches to your smartphone for display–making it much more affordable, easy to use and extremely portable. It lets you go out into the world and explore it in UV any time because it's easy to keep with you and it doesn't require charging.
But the SmartUV isn’t just any gadget, it also supports a cause we feel passionate about – helping you detect and prevent further sun damage to your skin.
Overexposure to the sun's UV light causes sunburn and 90% of skin cancers; damages the immune system and eyes, ages skin prematurely and fades color in fabrics and furnishings.
UV light is invisible and most of its harmful effects only show up over time, with sun damage lying beneath the skin, unknown for years. Most of us see our skin in the mirror and can't help but think, "I don't really have too much to worry about". But under UV light, your skin looks quite different.
Firstly, UV light penetrates the outer layer of your skin, showing you what it looks like below the surface. Secondly, pigmentation (melanin) build-up shows up as dark spots, so you can spot invisible sun damage. This helps you take better precaution and protect against later problems – before it becomes visible.
It’s not just for adults!
Teaching kids about sun safety is hard when they can't see what you are talking about, but the SmartUV makes this fun for everyone. Sunblock looks black in UV light, showing up uncovered spots when applying it, and when it fades or wears off during the day! Most products wear off in just 2 hours, even without the effects of water or rubbing off on towels which speeds up the process.
Seeing your skin with the SmartUV makes sun safety real and practical. The SmartUV assists in uncovering developing sunspots, monitoring skin damage due to aging, and even getting advance warning of skin health risks that cause melanoma, so you can take proactive measures to make the best decisions for your skin.
The final SmartUV design
We revealed our final design at CES 2017 in January, and while the selfie mode makes it great to see your face in UV, many backers asked for a way to explore the UV world with more freedom. Our answer is a 50cm (19.685”) extention cable for every SmartUV.
Projected retail pricing once the Kickstarter campaign closes will be around $195 per unit, but as a thank you for helping us to make this amazing project possible, we are offering the following discounted reward prices to backers for both individual and bulk pledges:
In the press
Our teams have been working very hard for months to create the SmartUV, and we are incredibly proud to have been honored by the largest electronics show awards in the world – the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Here is an excerpt of some media coverage we received at the CES Awards:
Thanks to the media who have picked up on the SmartUV.
Our prototype in action
All UV footage in our videos was shot with our actual working SmartUV prototype, using the exact same UV lens technology that will be in the production of the final SmartUV.

Follow us on Facebook for updates during the campaign and other news about the Nurugo product line. Please also take a moment to share this campaign, as we need everyone's help to make the SmartUV a reality.
NURUGO was designed and manufactured in South Korea by UNIONCOMMUNITY Co Ltd. The brand name NURUGO combines the Korean meaning of "finger-pushing", "enjoying" various aspects of life, and furthermore "going" forward to a better place in the world.
NURUGO refuses to settle for the status quo and will continuously focus on the future of smartphones. It is believed that NURUGO can unleash the potential of smartphones especially with today’s generation, where people use their smartphones daily from morning ’til night.
We are very thankful to our previous Kickstarter backers that made the Nurugo Micro possible in 2016. You can see the Nurugo Micro project and its results here:
Risks and challenges
The Nurugo SmartUV team has over 15 years of product engineering experience. With our passion for this project and our previous succesful Nurugo Micro Kickstarter project in 2016, we continuously research ways to apply technology in real-life situations and like to explore applications in health and beauty and the micro-world.
We've already completed and tested our SmartUV prototype, so the smartphone software and camera technology has been proven. All that remains now is to create the moulds and the manufacturing process to mass produce our final designs to create the production SmartUV, and then to deliver it to people around the world!
We learned a lot from our previous crowdfunding project when we launched the Nurugo Micro - especially about production and shipping management - and we've planned and prepared even more for the SmartUV to ensure a smooth experience for everyone.
However, there are still aspects of this process that may fall outside of our control, such as:
- Unexpected long component leading times
- Unexpected shortages
- Any shipping delays outside our control
Nevertheless, we have strong partnerships with every level of our supply chain and every member of the team is dedicated to delivering the best product on time to all of our incredible backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
