One Polaroid a day, for 365 days
The first time I visited Japan I made a diary named “15 Days in Japan”. To date, it has been visited 90,000 times. A lot of people reached out to ask questions and to say how much they loved seeing the real, unfiltered, side of a first-time traveller in Japan.
Now, two years later, I am moving permanently to Tokyo and I want to document every single day of my first year living in Japan. For each of the first 365 days I plan to take a single Polaroid photo, describe the events of that day and the story behind that photo, and post it online for everyone to see. The posts on this online diary will be about the places I go, the people I meet, the things I do or the things that happen to me.
See some of my previous photos below.
Camera and film to be used
For this project I will use a Fujifilm Instax 300 Wide. I picked this camera for its good reviews, reasonable price and because I'm a long time Fujifilm user. I also wanted to choose a camera that uses wide polaroid film and the Instax 300 wide uses film that is 86 by 108mm—a very large film size.
Stretch Goal: £1,600
If we reach £1,600 in funding I will send every single one of you an unpublished polaroid for each one you’re already entitled to. These polaroids will be shots that did not make it to the website. See them as the B-sides of my polaroid diary. I will be the one choosing which unpublished polaroid shot you receive and I will write the whole story behind it just for you to read.
Pledgers of £12 or more will receive one unpublished surprise polaroid. Pledgers of £48 or more will receive four unpublished surprise polaroids, one for each season. Pledgers of £120 or more will receive four unpublished surprise polaroids, one for each season, and two unpublished polaroids taken during our time out. Pledgers of £145 or more will receive four unpublished surprise polaroids, one for each season. These rewards are on top of the already existing rewards.
How you can choose your Polaroid
I will build a web page for backers of this kickstarter to pick the photo they want. The first person to pick a photo gets it. You just need to go to the web page, see the available photos, pick your favourite, enter your email and I will match that email with your Kickstarter profile email in order to arrange the delivery.
Why this project costs £600
At the time I am writing this, the Fujifilm Instax Wide 300 costs £99.88 on Amazon and comes with 10 films. In order to take 365 photos I will need buy 18 packs of 20 polaroid films that in total cost £250.20. I will also probably need a scanner to scan the photos as I won't have one with me when I move to Japan. Scanners cost between £40 and £50. On top of this, I will spend about £2 on each photo with shipping and packaging, as well as a few hours building the website for people to see the diary as well as the web page for backers of this Kickstarter to pick their photos.
Risks and challenges
In case I become ill or leave Japan, the project will resume once I return. This is about the first 365 days living in Japan. There is a chance of a flood, fire or natural disaster destroying some the Polaroids. I will be diligent to post them online as quickly as possible and mail them to the backers as soon as requested.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
