Hi, my name is Sienna Morris, and I am an artist inspired by science. My work is called Numberism, which is artwork drawn entirely with numbers and equations by hand, using data pulled from personal research. This helps me learn, and is my way of sharing the beauty of math and science with others.
I have been drawing using my Numberism technique since 2008 and have been creating work inspired by science since 2010. Over the years, Numberism has become an integral part of how I explore science, pushing me to delve deeper and improve my focus. This year, I am exploring the human body, with a focus on the Central Nervous System and Brain. To improve my education and the artistic result, I am building a lab in my studio for a more hands on approach.
Most of what I learn comes from books, open courseware and picking the brains of wayward scientists. I learn a lot this way, but science is meant to be played with. A lab would allow me to get a hands on learning experience of the central nervous system that I'll never forget, and will offer me daily inspiration and challenges.
The lab will also help me make more art! I will be drawing original Numberism drawings through every stage of the research process, using data I've pull from my reading, and reference images I've pulled from my stereo micrscope or other aspects of my lab. This is artwork and science I get to share with you. Many of the rewards are ways to preorder work from the lab and the finished series on the CNS, including original and limited edition works.

$2,000 GOAL - FUNDED!
Happiness; The Basic Science Lab
My basic lab consists of the bare essentials I need to start my hands-on learning experience in the CNS. This will allow me to get equipment such as a low end stereoscope, specimens for a few weeks of dissection, a dissection kit, staining sets, glassware, a Lab book, and safety equipment like ventilation, goggles, a portable sink, etc.
This will cover the cost for the basic essentials as well as most of the cost of printing and creating the rewards necessary to reach this goal.
First Stretch Goal UNLOCKED!
Bigger, Better, We have the Technology..
If we reach the this stretch goal, I can get better quality equipment, including a stereoscope that I can pull video and images from for reference, more specimens, and a web cam that I can use to live stream the experiments and Numberism drawings I do in the lab.
I will also be able to get specific equipment and software to perform CLARITY in my own lab. This would be amazing, and would allow me to process specimens to see and investigate specific systems like a neural network, or the cardiovascular system of a specimen. I am working with a scientist in Cambridge to design the lab specifically for such experiments.
$3,500 Stretch Goal Upgrade:
- Physical rewards from $25 and up will receive a 5" x 5" paper print from the Numberism Specimens series. These are prints of my 5" x 5" Numberism sketches from what I view under the stereo microscope. They are signed by me and come with a description of the numbers used.
- Access to web cam streaming of me working in the lab or drawing numberism pieces.
$5,000 Goal UNLOCKED!
Time is of the essence
Meeting this goal, will allow me to afford better equipment for the lab, more specimens, and allow me to devote all my time in the lab for 2 full weeks. I will be able to have my assistant handle all printing, shipping, orders and other bussinessy stuff that I usually do for these two weeks. This is great. It means I get to fully immerse myself in the research and lab experience to start this off right.
$5,000 Stretch Goal Upgrade:
- I will make time lapse videos of each Numberism drawing I make in the lab! Kickstarter supporters will have advanced access to these videos.
- Those coming to the Private Lab Art Show will now receive either two 8" x 10"s or one 11" x 14" paper print from the lab series.
$10,000 GOAL UNLOCKED!
One Month of Science!
Reaching this goal will give me one full month of dedicated scientific study in the lab! If we reach this level, I will be able to fully devote myself to studying the central nervous system for one full month, utilizing my shiny new lab to explore the physical nature of the eye, spine and brain, while improving my lab and dissection techniques. As I study, I will, of course draw what I learn in small Numberism Study notes. Amassing all these "Numberism Notes" will assist me in creating my final Numberism drawings of the Eye, Spine and Brain.
$10,000 Stretch Goal Upgrade:
- Each physical reward from $25 and up will receive TWO 5" x 5" paper prints from my Numberism Specimen Series. These are prints of my 5" x 5" Numberism sketches from what I view under the stereo microscope. They are signed by me and come with a description of the numbers used.
- The portfolio reviews can now be done over skype or google hang outs so we can talk face to face about your work.
- Those attending the Private Lab Art Show will now receive TWO 11" x 14" paper prints from the Lab Series!
- Backers with Original Art rewards will receive a shirt or either "Heart" or "Touch"
- All rewards that include the Desktop Wallpaper will receive the full package of desktop wallpapers.
New Stretch Goal! $15,000
If we reach this goal, I will produce a Numberism Tutorial Video! This will feature how I choose my data, laying out the drawing, and tips for creating a Numberisming drawing.
"Livin' the Dream"
This stretch goal would allow me to spend all of my time studying and drawing for 2 months. If we reach this goal, I will be able to hire others to handle more of my responsibilities of my arts business so I can devote my time to studying the CNS and creating original work. I will still attend my usual markets and conventions (like Portland Saturday Market and comic cons) but would devote the majority of my time otherwise in the lab.
$30,000 Stretch Goal Upgrade:
- Every physical reward from $25 and up will receive a full collection of 5" x 5" paper prints from my Numberism Specimen Series, which come signed by me and include a description of the numbers used to create the pieces.
- Those attending the Private Lab Art Show will now receive one 16" x 20" fine art paper print from the Lab series! (usually costing $80)
Limited Edition Canvas Prints:
I can't post images of what these will look like, because I haven't drawn them yet, but you can pre order original Numberism drawings that I either create in the lab (Numberism Art Specimens measuring 5" x 5"), or you can order a custom Numberism drawing that relates in some way to the CNS or human body. We will work one on one to plan the piece out and choose science that best suits your subject.
Newly ADDED From my Collection:
I'm offering a few of my smaller original Numberism drawings here, including "Observer", "Skull", "Flame" and "6pm". Flame is drawn with the speed of light in metric. All the others are drawn with the numbers of the clock, 1 - 12, to remind us to live in the present.
They are all framed, signed, and come with a certificate of authenticity and a magnifying glass. Plus the LAB ART REPRODUCTION package.
You can choose to have them shipped together in December, or have the original shipped in June and your 11"x14" lab art print shipped separately in December.
There are more rewards to the right. Thank you for looking through and for all your support!
Risks and challenges
Challenges to create my studio lab would relate to availability and delivery of items needed, such as ventilation equipment and specimens. I have a supplier for both ready to go, which will be able to fulfill the order in a reasonable amount of time.
I print my own canvas and paper prints in house, so I will not face any undue delays from outsourcing printing, though if we receive a high volume of orders, I may need to hire more help to process the orders and get them out in a timely manner. I ship from home as well, using USPS click n ship and UPS pick ups. I have been doing this for the past 4 years and do not expect any difficulties there.
The only real variable is the time it takes me to study and research the science needed to draw my pieces with. I cannot draw new artwork until my research is complete or I have made decent headway. The more funding the project gets, the more time I will have available to devote to studying and drawing. I expect to be able to produce new Lab Numberism Art more quickly if we reach the 3rd stretch goal. Otherwise, I expect to be able to share this new series by the end of 2015 or spring of 2016.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
