About this project
Demo last updated September 10: Revision 8
Demo is available for Windows, but will be coming to Mac and PC as well.
Vagante is an adventure set in a dark fantasy world filled with monsters, demons, and crooks. Despite these dangers, adventurers commonly travel these unforgiving lands questing for fame, riches, and power.
A recent rumor has it that a certain cave at the edge of the woods guards an unfathomable treasure. While a handful of intrepid adventurers have ventured into the cave already, none have returned. You on the other hand, know you’re different, and something draws you to these caverns. Undeterred by the potential danger, you set out by caravan to investigate...
Classes Vagante features a character class selection before the game starts. You can choose to play as one of several classes, such as the knight, rogue, or mage. The class that you choose greatly affects the way the game is played. Knights are more geared to close-quarters-combat, while mages are purely offensive distance fighters. Rogues on the other hand can approach combat in a variety of methods.
Combat We believe that the combat in Vagante should be difficult, but fair. Enemies and traps won't hurt you unless they look like they should. Damage-on-contact, a very commonly implemented game mechanic, is not a universal rule in Vagante. Units have attack animations, and players who are skilled enough can evade attacks!
Magic The magic system of Vagante is directly inspired by games such as Diablo & Castlevania. Players will find scrolls, which produce a magical effect upon use before disintegrating. Reading books on the other hand, will teach players spells. The act of casting itself requires concentration and time. But if a mage has enough time and patience, spells are well worth the effort.
Power Affinities are an important mechanic in Vagante. Choosing certain affinities after leveling up will directly affect the way the game is played. Some affinities are reserved for specific character classes, while others are more general, and can be improved from any character class.
Items Since the game is procedurally generated, a major theme of the game is: “you never know what you’ll find next!” Consequently, you’ll find a wide variety of items and equipment throughout the game. Equipment in Vagante can often bestow drastically game-changing properties to the wielder. These properties include positive and negative effects, so choosing your equipment wisely is important.
Monsters Of course, there will be hordes of monsters throughout the game. Choose your battles, know your environment, and defeat the enemies that stand in your way. Or perhaps, simply ignore them and move on. But beware though, there are powerful creatures which may prove to be more than just a handful.
In late 2013, we quit our jobs to found Nuke Nine. Ever since then, we’ve been working on Vagante full-time.
Although we've managed to scrape by on our savings, we're now getting to the point where we need funding to continue development.
This is the game we’ve always wanted to make, and we’re super excited to realize its completion. We hope you share our vision.
Since the very first public alpha of Vagante, we’ve incorporated countless suggestions and fixed numerous bugs found by players. This will continue to be an important part of our development in the future. If you’d like to see something added or changed in Vagante, we read every piece of feedback we get.
The current public alpha of Vagante only scratches the surface of what we want to implement. We have more items, areas, classes, monsters, and more besides planned. Our goal is to make the game we want to play, and we’re some of the harshest critics when it comes to games.
Bonus Add-on: Add on $15 to any pledge level, and receive a Kickstarter exclusive travel companion in game! These companions will be purely cosmetic, so they wont be saving you from spikes or from a fight, but they'll keep you company on your adventures.
DRM Free Copies - We’ll be offering DRM-Free copies of Vagante to all backers that receive a copy, along with a key for Steam assuming we pass Steam Greenlight
Extra Game Copies - Vagante will eventually support online multiplayer! If you'd like to pick up an extra copy for a friend, just add $10 for each copy on top of your pledge. Limit of three extra copies per backer.
International Shipping - We’re now offering international shipping for all physical rewards! Just add $15 extra dollars on top of your pledge, and we’ll handle the rest.
Here's a sample of what you can hear from the game and can expect on the Full OST by Sam.
Eugene, Kyle and Keo have been working together for close to three years, on various game projects. We're ecstatic to be working with Sam English on this project.
Eugene Paik (ekun), Programmer
I've been making games for half my life, and playing games for longer. Caffeine is my lifeblood.
Kyle Tenan (K6L2), Programmer
Mountain Dew Distortion is the best carbonated beverage, and Super Metroid is the best video game ever made. I'm here to deliver a quality video game experience.
Keo Bun, Artist
I'm an undergrad in fine arts. I've been working on games for 4+ years. I'm interested in storytelling, building worlds and characters.
Sam English, Composer
I absolutely love it when music perfectly matches an environment, moment or feeling, particularly in video games. My dream is to be able to compose songs that do just that.
Risks and challenges
We've been working together full-time on Vagante for over 8-months. We believe in this game, and we're committed to making it happen.
Like with all projects though, there's a chance that development will take longer than expected. If this happens though, rest assured that Vagante will be released when it meets our expectations as a finished game.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
