How did NuBike happen? Well, when I saw riders struggling with greasy chains fixing a flat, I thought there HAS to be a better way. When I saw riders walking out of the hills with broken chains and chains destroying clothing, again I thought, there HAS to be a better way. When my wife ended up with a knee problem likely caused from years of extensive riding, I knew there HAD to be a better way. It’s hard to believe, in the 150 year history of the bicycle, no one has addressed these problems. So, with that said, I accepted the challenge.

The ideas began with drawings on napkins, then progressed to wood and plastic mock-ups. When I thought my design might work, I hired a machinist to fabricate my designs out of aircraft grade aluminum. Along the way, there were ideas that just didn’t work and, fortunately, many that did. Getting something to work mechanically is doable, but pairing a mechanical device to fit the human anatomy, not that easy. Then, there were the delays. Hi-speed computers run the machines, but making one part at a time still requires the same lengthly set-up time it takes to replicate thousands. Small orders produce small profits, so small orders are put on the back burner.

In designing the carbon-fiber frame, weight is always a consideration, but the greater concern is catastrophic failure. Composite frames manufactured in the past literally split apart under stress. To eliminate that problem, NuBike has an internal carbon-fiber “I-Beam” molded inside the shape as a secondary structure with the frame still weighing less than 3 pounds. A new computer optimized frame will weigh even less and it will accommodate most off-the-shelf components; wheels, saddles, handlebars, etc. 

With the project on track, I applied for a Patent. But then…another challenge. There was so much power and torque going to the rear wheel to gain speed, the steel drive axles were literally twisting into pretzels. At the time, I used the strongest metal and hardening processes known to man but the axles kept failing. Discouraged, to say the least, I shelved the project and cancelled my Patent application. About a year later, my engineer discovered an exotic new metal being used in military applications. We tried it and the axles performed perfectly, and have ever since. 

Persistence paid off. NuBike is capable of going faster with less effort using the mechanical advantages of leverage and gravity. Longer pedal cranks deliver more power to the rear wheel. Gravity and near vertical pedaling, combined with the rider’s weight, produces continuous force throughout the entire stroke. Simply put, NuBike is more efficient. And the concept will work on all bikes; Beach Cruisers, Mountain Bikes, Kids Bikes, even Rickshaws.  THE WORLD WILL LOVE NUBIKE !!!

Efforts to improve NuBike will continue, but the original objectives were accomplished; Eliminate the greasy chain, Go faster with less effort, Pedal with less stress on the knees, hips and ankles, Remove the rear wheel easily to fix a flat or store securely--and most importantly, NuBike is fun to ride. 

It’s been a long road but most of the heavy lifting is over. Once the tooling and molds are completed, we move on to manufacturing.  With your support, the goal is to make affordable bikes the entire world can enjoy.

Risks and challenges

Design and engineering is 90% complete. Tasks remaining: Create tooling and molds required to manufacture. Test the final product, i.e. gear ratios to be confirmed by "pro-cyclists", laboratory testing for strength, contracts established for assembly, hardware sources, paint schemes, packaging and distribution. Building devices at scale requires a significant capital investment. Estimated time to ship, 6-9 months from date of funding. We're looking for companies willing to work 24/7. NuBike was created around materials and processes used in the aerospace industry. Manufacturing will be in the Los Angeles area, where the project is located and resources are readily available. An anticipated delay will be finalizing gear ratios of the 4-speed transmission -- ratios must be perfect. Fortunately, 3D printing will allow us to make changes quickly to re-test and evaluate, we're estimating 3 to 5 weeks. We will keep our Backers updated with photos and videos as we move forward.
