The CliffNotes of Our Book [Festival]
The Plot and Theme:
The Irving Public Library and its partners, Half Price Books, the Friends of the Irving Public Library, local school districts, museums, other local libraries, and the DFW chapter of the Forever YA book club, will host the first annual North Texas Teen Book Festival (NTTBF) on March 7, 2015 at the Irving Convention Center. This free, one-day festival will highlight Middle Grade (MG) and Young Adult (YA) literature by connecting our large reading community to more than 25 authors and their stories. This festival will be built around one central theme- celebrating our love of teen literature. All we need is a little help from our friends!
The Setting and Characters:
In the summer of 2011, Irving Public Library began hosting YA author visits. As we’ve expanded our author events and panels through the past 3 years, the support and praise for our programs, from both teens and adults, has also grown exponentially. Last year alone, from June to August, we hosted 19 YA authors in 4 author events bringing in over 800 avid YA fans. And, it’s not just Irving that is doing well. YA author programs in all of North Texas are very well attended and received, showing that there is a definite thirst in North Texas for connecting with authors. As we talked with people in other cities, it became obvious… we need a really big, really great teen book festival in the Metroplex! Irving is uniquely situated in the heart of the Metroplex with convenient access to both airports and easy access to the DART light rail, so it's only natural that the idea of a teen book festival would take root and grow here in Irving.
The Irving Public Library, with great help from the steering committee consisting of representatives of Irving ISD, Coppell ISD, Half Price Books, and the Dallas Chapter of the Forever YA book club, has already been working hard to plan this amazing festival. But, more impressive than that, the teens themselves are getting involved even at this early stage. (Thank you Jack E. Singley’s book club members for the great video above!)
So here’s the plan for the festival: The NTTBF will feature more than 25 MG and YA authors split into 5 panels from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A keynote speaker will open the festival and it will conclude with a book signing party that will include giveaways, a dance floor, and DJ. On breaks between panel sessions you can participate in activities like the 'Speed Date with a Book' event- travel throughout a specified number of stations in traditional speed dating formula and, when the time limit for the event is reached, you may select one of the books you “dated” to take home.
What’s left to plan?
- June 2014: Fundraising (where we’re at now!)
- September 2014: Authors confirmed (shhh!! But we’ve already got some confirmed- John Corey Whaley and Julie Murphy, just to name two)
- September 2014: We go book shopping- Thanks to Half Price Books for being our sole book provider!
- October-March: Lots of little details and prep work that we still need to iron out
All the while, we’ll be talking up the festival non-stop!
What we need now is your help! If you’d like to see 25+ authors then pledge what you can! Every little bit helps. If you can’t pledge anything right now then please pass this information on to your book-loving friends. After all, why should Houston and Austin get all the fun?! Come on North Texas! Let's make this the best teen book festival our state has ever seen!
We raise the money needed to host a great festival that you will love. And, then we start planning the festival for 2016!
Risks and challenges
Fortunately we have recently thrown a number of similar events and have established good following in the community. This is just taking it to the next level. However, as is with any artistic event, there are always risks and challenges that are unpredictable. We are confident and 100% committed that we will be able to overcome any unforeseen road blocks so that we can throw the best teen book festival ever! All we need is your support and we'll see you March 7, 2015 at the Irving Convention Center.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
