About

Do you remember the glory days of arcades; walking into that dimly lit building, the buzzing lights and distractingly repetitive tunes fighting one another, vying for your attention?  I recall fondly how my shoes fought for every step as the floor clung stickily to them and feeding my quarter into the arcade machine only to watch it disappear and the machine not reading it.  Do you recall the days of getting really good at your favorite game and taking on any challenger; and then getting destroyed by that one person who didn’t know what they were doing, and kept hitting the same button over and over again?  Well ... welcome to Button Mashers!

Button Mashers is a 2-4 player dice game where players take turns rolling dice, and match the results to their character's special moves to deal damage to their opponent.

Button Mashers contains the following components:

  • 15 custom dice (10 Button and 5 Joystick)
(Design not finalized)
(Design not finalized)
  • 10 Character Cards
10 Character Cards (Front and Back)
10 Character Cards (Front and Back)
  • 10 punch out "Study Tokens" in First Edition Color (Limited to only games produced by this Kickstarter)
Study Token (One of each of the ten base characters in Kickstarter exclusive gold!)
Study Token (One of each of the ten base characters in Kickstarter exclusive gold!)
  • 4 Health Tracker with sliders

  • Rulebook

All images are of the prototype version of Button Mashers and subject to change in final version.

Button Mashers can be played either as a classic 1 vs. 1 game or tag team style 2 vs. 2.

The 1 vs. 1 game is played in a series of turns in which one player is on the offensive and the other is on the defensive. To determine who will get to select their character and be on the offensive first, players each roll 5 Button Dice and check to see who rolled the most stars.  Once the first player is determined, the first player takes 5 Button Dice and the 5 Joystick dice.  Second player takes the other 5 Button Dice and receives one "Study Token" (we will cover what these do later).  First player then selects his character followed by the second player.

Let’s take a look at what is on the character card.  Below you can see the  back of  “White Belt Nerd” 's character card.  The card has his name, attacks, and his special ability printed on it.  Each character has a set of attacks that they may be able to perform if they roll the correct dice combination on their turn.  The red arrows listed below each attack is the joystick inputs, while the blue letters and symbols are the button inputs.  When the attack is successfully performed it has a chance to do the damage printed to the right of the input commands.  A character's special ability is a character specific bonus or action that the character can perform.  In “White Belt Nerd” 's case it can make his Flaming Punch truly devastating.

Now that characters have been chosen the round can start.  First player rolls the 5 Joystick Dice and his 5 Button Dice and compares the results with his character card to create his attacks for the turn.  Any Button dice not used in a character’s specific attack can still be used as a regular attack if the results were a punch, kick, or strong attack.  Let’s look at an example:

White Belt Nerd is attacking White Belt Nerd’s Evil Clone’s Twin Brother.  He rolls the 5 Button and 5 Joystick dice and the results are as show below.  He then assigns the dice to create his Flaming Punch.  He also rolled a punch and strong attack.  The other directional dice and button dice not shown are not used (he rolled a block and stars fyi).

Oh boy!  It looks like White Belt Nerd’s Evil Clone’s Twin Brother is in trouble.  He has a total of 14 damage coming his way (9 from "Flaming Punch", 2 from the punch, and 3 from the strong attack).  Let’s hope he can defend well.

On defense, the player being attacked gets to roll 3 of the 5 unused Button Dice.  It’s a lot harder to block than attack when you are just mashing buttons after all.  If any of those dice land on the block symbol he may assign it against any attack to block all the damage it would cause.  Back to our example.

White Belt Nerd’s Evil Clone’s Twin Brother rolls three Button Dice and gets one block.  He decides to assign it against White Belt Nerd’s Flaming Punch. The punch and strong attack are unblocked causing 5 damage ( 2 for the punch and 3 for the strong attack).  White Belt Nerd’s Evil Clone’s Twin reduces his health from 50 to 45.  It hurts but could have been far worse!

Now it is time for White Belt Nerd’s Evil Clone’s Twin Brother’s to get some payback.  He rolls the 5 Joystick Dice and his 5 Button Dice.  He rolls two misses, two stars, and a strong attack for his Button Dice and two diagonals, a horizontal and two verticals.  He assigns his dice to perform his Flaming Kick and with is two stars rolled he can use his special ability to double the damage!  Since he rolled two misses he also receives a study token.

With his roll, White Belt Nerd's Evil Clone's Twin Brother was able to perform his Flaming Kick with his special ability.  His ability allows him to double his damage on the Flaming Kick attack and it take two blocks to fully block the attack.  If only one block is rolled it will only be able to block half the damage.  He was also lucky enough to roll two misses and receive a "study token".  Study tokens allow a player to re-roll any two dice on any future roll.  This functions as if the player was looking at the arcade machine's marquee and was studying how to perform moves.  "Study Tokens" can be obtained by rolling two misses or by not rolling two Button Dice when on the offensive.  A player may have up to 5 of these tokens saved up at a time. Back to the action!

It is White Belt Nerd's turn to block.  He rolls his Button Dice and rolls a block and two misses.  He receives a study token and can only block half the damage from the Flaming Kick.  His health drops from 50 to 41.

Play continues as such until one player is reduced to 0 health and is KO-ed.  The player left standing wins the round.  A game can either be played as a single round or in the classic fighting game style of best two out of 3 rounds.

Play before you pledge!

If you would like to play the game before you pledge or even after you pledge, we have a sample of the game.  Just below this paragraph will have a Dropbox link with a small sample to download.  The link offers two different characters, images of the dice that you can print out and glue or tape to dice and the rules to the game.  After you play, please feel free to leave a comment in the comment section!

4 Player, 2 vs. 2

Button Masher's can also be played as a 4 player 2 vs 2 style game.  In the traditional 4 player game the players split into teams of two and decide one player on each team to be their "on screen" fighter.  Those player's characters are considered to be fighting on the screen while the other players are waiting to be tagged in.  The two teams each roll their 5 button dice and determine who goes first by who rolls the most stars.  The team who goes first has their first fighter pick their character, then the other team picks their two characters, and finally the first team picks their last character.  Players who are not considered on screen at the beginning of the game receive one study token. Remember as well the "on screen" player who is on the defensive first also receives a token.

The players on the screen fight as normal as if it was a 1 vs. 1 but the teammate of the player on the offensive will roll  2 button dice before the attacker rolls.  If the dice come up as the same face they have accidentally hit a button on the machine and tagged in.  This causes the team to lose their attack and it is now the other team's turn to attack.  A player may switch out on purpose when they roll two stars while on the offensive.  They may not spend these stars on any attacks or abilities if they wish to switch out.  At the end of any turn where a team is on the offensive, the "off screen" teammate heals 1 health.  A team may only have 5 study tokens total saved up between their two players.  The game is played until both players on a team are KO-ed.

The 2 vs 2 game may also be played alternatively in which all players are considered on screen at once.  Character selection and who will go first is determined the same was as the regular 2 vs 2 game, but players take turns attacking any player on the other team.  In this game type, the first player on team 1 decides who on team two they wish to attack.  After they attack and that player defends the first player on team two does the same with attacking a player on team one.  Then the second player on team one attacks a player who defends and finally the second player on team 2 does the same.

From Left to RIght: Nicholas, Christopher, and Jacob

Nicholas Sawyer - The "elder" of the group.  Nick has a MBA in strategic management and a love for all things game.  His true interest in gaming didn't reach its full heights until 3rd Edition D&D and his first magical visit to Gen-Con.  Nick's favorite games to play are Button Mashers (of course), Sentinels of the Multiverse, Love Letter, Last Night on Earth, and Shadow Hunters.

Jacob DeSmidt – The friend of the group of five years. Jake obtained his bachelor’s degree in International Business Administration. He has played games his entire life. His passion for gaming began during his NES years and continues today through tabletop gaming. Jake is a rotational DM and player in a weekly Pathfinder session. His favorite games are, (Button Mashers goes unsaid) Pathfinder, Sentinels of the Multiverse, Star Realms ( A new favorite ) and Sheriff of Nottingham to name a few.

Christopher "The Face" Sawyer - Nick's younger brother by 4 years is a Civil Engineer by trade and is "The Face" of Dusty D12 Gaming due to his ability to not be socially awkward (or at least as awkward as Nick and Jake).  He has had a love of board games from a young age, but did not really get into table top games until he played 3rd edition D&D in middle school.  This quickly led him down the rabbit hole of gaming with other role playing games and eventually board games.  His favorite games to player currently are Sentinels of the Multiverse, Krosmaster, Epic Spell Wars, Star Realms, and Button Mashers.

We want to give out our most sincere thanks to the people that are not part of Dusty D12 Gaming, but assisted in the development of Button Mashers and the Kickstarter.

Risks and challenges

To reduce the risk of delays all components of the base game are designed and ready to be sent to the manufacturer. Any stretch goal characters as well as backer designed characters will need their artwork completed and attacks balanced before they can be sent to the manufacturer. Our artist has been able to handle multiple character designs at once, therefore this should only take a few weeks.

This, being our first project, we have estimated a conservative time line of when we will be able to provide the finished copy to you, our backers.
