In the beginning...
Hey there! Nice to meet you all. Our names are Jason Ballew, Nick Martin, and Price Garrison and we're the creators of Kingless Generation, the production company behind the development of the new work, Divine Spark, or Young Man Move Over Here: A Gnostic Odyssey through Time and Space. Or Divine Spark for short!
Over 2 years ago, we were hanging out playing some board games when we started talking about the Gnostic Gospels. As we talked about them more and more, we couldn't shake the feeling that there was so much to discover within them. So we set out to do what felt like an impossible task, we read every single one. THAT'S RIGHT. We read 52 gospels.
If you're unfamiliar with what the Gnostic Gospels are, they are a set of early 4th century Christian texts that were discovered in Egypt in 1945. What the texts contain is a completely different idea of what the Christian faith was meant to be. After attempts by the Church to discredit the Gnostics as heretical, the texts were eventually buried and lost to history.
The long and short of their message? The God portrayed in the Bible as we know it is actually the physical manifestation of fear and ignorance. Yeah, read that again.
If that sounds CRAZY and also SO INTERESTING, first, you're totally right. And second, follow us on Instagram @kinglessgeneration to hear more every day.
It IS pretty cool, but like, what exactly are you doing?
What a great question!
This Kickstarter is raising funds for a series of workshops that will allow us to hire a group of actors, designers, writers, movers and amazing artists of all types to help us untangle this crazy web of really amazing material. After reading all of the gospels, we've distilled everything we've read into three different categories that we want to explore:
1. Origin Stories
2. Wisdom vs Ignorance
3. Religion + Theology
Each thematic workshop will consist of two weekends where the artists will gather and begin to help us to get a better sense of what will thematically resonate in our piece, how we can activate and engage with the text through movement and voice, and most importantly, to bring some diverse new voices into the room.
This is just the beginning too! After these workshops, we plan to take everything we've learned and turn this into a full production. And it's going to be amazing! But we cannot start this process without each of you!
What is all of my money going towards?
Totally fair question and it just so happens that WE MADE A CHART FOR YOU!
So let's break this down shall we?
The largest cost we have is for Rehearsal Space. We want to make sure we have rehearsal space to do this in. Otherwise we'd be out on the street and I'm telling you that it would be VERY WEIRD to do this on the streets of New York y'all.
Following that we have Kickstarter Perks. We want to make you some sweet swag and this is just what it costs to do that! We have our vendors all selected and it's going to be great.
Next is Artist Stipends. We want to pay everyone for every workshop and we want to make sure that we treat them well! This lets us do that.
Lastly, we have Workshop Materials. We want to make sure that we have all the goods at the workshop such as costume pieces, props, paper to write on, water for everyone to drink, you name it.
We've also included Kickstarter related costs. This includes the 5% figure that they take.
WOW HOW EXCITING... what about them rewards though?
Yes, you're totally right. This is Kickstarter after all. WE HAVE SOME FUN REWARDS FOR YOU!
Want a good look at the designs we're turning into pins? YES OKAY! These amazing designs are going to be transformed into beautiful enamel pins. They will look a bit different when they're produced, but we'll keep you updated with designs as they're developed! We can't wait to see how these will look. We have a vendor all selected and once we get the funds, we'll start the process!
Such a cool design and it will OBVIOUSLY make a great pin. What about our logo design pin? ALSO VERY COOL.
We've also developed an amazing poster design that we cannot wait to send to print. Look at this!
If those designs aren't enticing enough and you just want more, then we have a tier for you. We will write you a personal parable AND you get everything else. If you want to really support this project in all the ways possible, you can even get a Workshop Producer credit.
These are just some fun perks, but remember all the money you give is going to the development and support of some amazing artists! If you have any questions about any of the reward tiers, please feel free to reach out!
One last thing: Who are you and What is Kingless Generation?
Great point. Kingless Generation is a new production company based out of New York dedicated to story-telling that sparks curiosity, compassion, and creativity. We believe that through myth-making we discover truth, through world building we understand our reality, through creating characters we identify with humanity, and through gathering audiences we build communities. Kingless Generation is dedicated to creating art that provokes questions rather than provides answers.
That's just a fancy way of saying, we're artists. We've all been involved in theater and film for quite some time and are combining our efforts under the guiding principals above. Divine Spark is Kingless Generation's first production as a company and we're so excited to start the development process.
Again, what we're hoping to do is raise money to allow us to do a series of workshops. After these workshops, we'll take what we've learned and start devising a show! Theater is one of those things that needs a lot of time to develop and see what works and what doesn't and in order to do that, we need a much larger group of artists than the three of us. Also a more diverse group of artists than just us. Having more voices in the room allows for more questions and in the end a better piece. And that's what we're hoping to do, with your help.
So what's next?
Well, first off thank you for deciding to join us on this odyssey! We cannot do any of this without you.
After this Kickstarter when we're fully funded, we're planning on spending the month of June working out all the details. Finding the right rehearsal spaces, reaching out and building our team and putting all of the pieces into place to make this all happen. We're planning on having our first workshop up and running by late summer or early fall (depending on our team and space's availability). We'll be keeping everyone up to date here as well as on our social channels as things develop, but you'll all be along for the ride!
Follow along with us over the next 30 days to learn more about what we're doing, get some insight into the workshops we're hoping to run and get to learn more about who Kingless Generation is and what we're all about!

Risks and challenges
Well, first we're looking at retelling the history of Christianity, so there's always the risk of eternal damnation and the wrath of the Church. That's our biggest watch out.
Beyond the state of our eternal souls, there's always a risk during the design and printing process of the pieces not developing how you hope, but we're working closely with a graphic designer to stay on top of any changes that need to be made in order to hold up the integrity of the pieces. The designs may alter slightly during production, but we will keep you 100% involved in the process as that happens.
For the workshop themselves, there is always a possibility that dates need to be shifted around due to space and talent availability. Our first priority is making sure that we produce the best workshop we can with the money that you've given us, so the calendar will develop as we pull our full team together.
If any other issues present themselves along the way, we will jump to inform you all first. Transparency is absolutely key and we don't want to break your trust! Always feel free to reach out and ask us questions, we'll respond as quickly as we can.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
