NRaged Artemis: Design Simplicity Meets Quality Shoes
Striving to create a new brand that offers high quality and great designs.
About NRaged Artemis:
NRaged Artemis is a U.S. Navy veteran owned company. Our goal is to produce a shoe that is versatile and stylish. We want to ensure that our customers receive a quality product that is worth every penny they spend on the shoe. I can remember many times where I had bought shoes at payless and I would have to buy a new pair almost every other week. My kids were rough on their shoes. I want to make sure that my product stands up to the test of time, which is why we have partnered up with a shoe manufacturer that uses Italian leathers and suede. This manufacturer does not use an assembly line to product the shoe. They build each pair one by one and ensure that it meets the quality guidelines that we agreed upon. You should be happy with your shoes from design to quality to comfort. Your shoes should meet all the demands that you put on it without a price tag that will hurt your pocketbook.
My name is David Young. I am the owner of NRaged Artemis. I currently work at a Title I school, which just means that the overall income of each of the families for these children are at poverty levels. I started my company to not only bring a little extra income to my family, but to also give me the ability to help others through campaigns such as providing clothing and shoes to underprivileged families.
When I was in the Navy, I was very fortunate and was able to serve my country to the fullest. On one occasion, I volunteered at a school event where we gave shoes to children of military families so that they had a fresh pair to wear. These families did not have a ton of money to work with and usually lived a paycheck to paycheck life. It was hard to see families grow up in this environment and the environment that I currently work in.
All that said, I hope to one day have the ability to help families that live in these conditions so that they do not have to buy cheap shoes that don't work longer than a week.
It is heartbreaking to see a kid ask for duct tape so that he can keep his shoes together because his parents do not have the money to buy him another pair.
My goal is to be a helpful hand during these dark times. With the help of Kickstarter backers, I can get one step closer to that dream.
The story behind our name came from one of my drives to work. I would listen to books while I drive an hour to my workplace. The particular book that I was listening to talked of a hunter that left his homeland because of the unfair treatment that he witnessed there. As he traveled away, he had to learn to live in seclusion with no contact from others. Soon, his isolation got the better of him and he would often hunt and travel throughout the night, oblivious to what he was doing or the lengths that he would go. The story spoke to me and it lit that light bulb in my head and sparked an idea. The hunter had a goal of survival. When he felt overwhelmed by the challenges that he faced, he would go into a certain state of fury. This state of fury reminded me of an enraged state that a person might find themselves when they were backed in a corner. That is how I was feeling at the time. I felt like the world was coming down on me and trapping me. As a hunter, I couldn't cower in the corner.....I had to fight. And, fight is what I did.
But, this was only half of the name. I liked the prospect of it, but I thought the company name needed more. So, I thought back to the hunter and a high school lesson. In high school, we studied Greek and Roman mythology. This is actually one of my favorite lessons. There is so much to learn from the Greeks and Romans. High school was a trying time for me. With the onslaught of hormones and the ever increasing challenges of girlfriends, I was a troubled young man. I wasn't horrible, but I wasn't the best son I could be or the best student I could be. I guess you could say that I felt backed in a corner and had to fight for freedom at this point of my life, too. That is when I decided to change my situation and join the military.
Anyhow, one of the Greek Gods that we learned about is Artemis. Artemis is the Greek Goddess of the Hunt. The combination of these two parts of my life culminated into the company's name: NRaged Artemis. For the powers that be has oversight over the hunter and helps to bring forth the enraged state needed to face the onslaught of the world and provide that extra help to reach his goal. Whatever your goal is start your hunt and get enraged so that you can overcome all the challenges in your path.
The company logo comes from Artemis. Artemis is usually represented with a bow and arrow. The logo that makes up the N is a combination of two arrowheads - one in red and the other in black. The difference in color is a representation of the Yin and Yang philosophy - for every good there is a bad and for every bad there is a good. If you look at both arrows, you will see 5 lines that represent that little bit of good or bad in each part of our life. We need to always remember that no matter how bad things are, there will always be a part of our lives that have some good in it. And, vice versa, no matter how good things are, we must prepare ourselves to fight off the impending bad that is always trying to creep in. The five lines in each of these arrows represent the 5 values of the company that I hold dear to my heart: Family, Faith, Honor, Courage, and Commitment.
Family - I believe this is the foundation that holds us all together. Whether your family is relatives, friends, or colleagues, our lives revolve around these individuals. They represent the reason we fight so hard to win our everyday battles.
Faith - I am a Christian man and I hold faith close to my heart. Everyone has something that guides them in their life. Something that tells them what is right or wrong and usually checks us on our ability to do the right thing. In my heart, it is Jesus Christ that talks to me and carries me through my hard times. Without his guidance, I don't believe that I could have walked through my tough times.
Honor - Many may know what honor means. However, to plainly state it, honor is high respect. I am Korean and in my heritage, honor is a strong part of the culture. If a person disrespects their family name, they are often disowned and made to leave the family. I know this may sound cruel, but I believe that a person should represent their family to the best of their ability. They should not bring any trouble to the family.
Courage - This is a strong part of each of us. Courage is what gives each of us the fight to go on even in the face of danger. No matter how hard things get, a person of courage can rise up to the challenge.
Commitment - A person should always stick to their commitments, their promises, and their word. These things should not be given lightly for a person is bonded to them. If you do not uphold to your commitments, you will soon lose respect and trust. Once you lose that, it will be many years before you can earn them back.
That is NRaged Artemis and what we stand for.
NRaged Artemis Campaign for Shoes:
I am an avid collector of shoes. I pride myself in buying unique designs that have impeccable quality. I recently opened my company, NRaged Artemis, on 15 May 2019. I offer many things on my website, but my ultimate goal is to one day design my own brand of shoes that I can offer to the world like Nike, Adidas, Under Armour, and many others have done. I am not doing this to get famous or even to get rich. Although that would be a tremendous side effect to my goals, my real goal is to offer a great shoe at a great price that have a great design. I can remember as a child having to settle for cheaply made shoes because we didn't have the kind of money to buy the more popular name brands. I want people to be able to have those popular name brands and at a more attractive price.
The following are NRaged Artemis's first set of shoe designs that we are trying to get produced through this kickstarter event:
I realize that there are many manufacturers to work with some in the U.S., China, Italy and many more locations. NRaged Artemis chose to go with a shoe manufacturer that takes pride in their work and provides us with a platform to help us launch our first line of shoes.
The best part of using this particular manufacturer is that each shoe is made by hand and not run through an assembly line of machines. The human interaction is an essential part to keeping quality so high and only using materials that meet the standards of quality.
So, why use Italian leather?
Before we explain why Italian leather is so important to our shoes, we have to understand all facets of leather. Real leather is not synthetically made meaning it is not fake leather as you may commonly hear terms like faux leather, leatherette or pleather, which are not real leather. Real leather is actually made from the hide of an animal like cow, buffalo, sheep, pig, crocodile and snake.
The most commonly used is cowhide in the leather-making process. Since this leather is the by-product of the meat and dairy industry, it is the most readily available leather around the world. Additionally, cowhide is durable meaning it is very tough, which make it ideal for shoe making.
Bonded leather is partially real leather but also incorporates recycled material making it very inexpensive. Since it is made of recycled materials, it must be bonded together using various chemicals. The inexpensive cost of this leather comes at a price of quality since these materials are not know to last very long.
Genuine leather is a step up from the low-quality bonded leather. This leather is what remains after the top layers have been split off for other uses. This leather is a better quality than the bonded or faux leathers, but it is still glued together with other left over layers. Genuine leather does last longer than bonded or faux leathers, but does not last as long as you may like.
Top grain leather is a good quality leather. It is second best of all leather products. This leather is used to produce suede and nubuck - the type of leather that feels velvety to the touch.
Full grain leather is by far the best and highest quality leather. This leather consists of the entire top layer without any shaving or buffed methods used. This leather retains its full thickness and make incredibly durable.
It is clear that top and full grain are the two best quality leathers. Both are primarily used in Italy, where artisan leather crafting begins not once the cowhide is prepared and treated for use, but much before that. Leather coming from Italian cattle is not only excellent in quality because of the way it is made, but because of how the cattle is raised. Italy’s moderate climate allows for cattle to freely roam outdoors without concern for harsh weather conditions that may cause injury. Barbed wire, fences, branding, and electric cattle prods are not used, as these will scar the cowhides. Diet is adjusted and insects are moderated to ensure that the cows, and their hides, remain healthy at all times.
NRaged Artemis shoes are made of 100% Italian leather. Some of the designs require the leather to be nap brushed to form suede. However, all designs are original ideas that are brought to life by a small factory in Italy.
How are handmade shoes produced?
In an age where machines do much of the work that people used to do, there are still places where artisans and machines meet to create exceptional and high-quality shoes.
Research and design
The first step to this process is the research and design. This particular part of the process is done in-house at NRaged Artemis where we take the latest trends and start our sketchwork of our upcoming products.
Modeling and cutting
Once we have completed our design work, we send the template to the manufacturer. The manufacturer molds the design and creates an upper template. This template is then cut from the materials manually using the template.
Assembly and sewing
At this point all patterns are cut and sewn together through a process called hemming. This makes the skeleton of the shoe. The assembly is where artisan work and machines come together.
Prototyping and sampling
During this stage, a final or finished product is produced for approval. All pieces are treated with various creams and natural waxes to restore the original softness and gloss to the leather.
NRaged Artemis Planned Next Steps:
This particular Kickstarter is our pathway to the future of NRaged Artemis Shoes. We currently have 11 designs that are viewable above and will be produced through our Italian manufacturer. We do plan to make a few more designs with this manufacturer while we search for a U.S. manufacturer that we can use for all our future designs. We currently have 12 other sketchworks in process and we continually increase that number every week.
In order for us to relocate our manufacturing help to the U.S., we must take steps to ensure that our product becomes visible to the public market. This increase in production and sales will allow us to compete with the larger organizations that have been in this market for decades. We hope to accomplish this same feat within the next 5 years.
Through your backing, we will be able to accomplish our dreams of one day producing a high-quality product at a competitive price.
Risks and challenges
If NRaged Artemis is unable to reach our goal, we will have to wait on production of all of our designs until we are able to come up with the prepaid amount for production. This will delay our current plans for a minimum of 5 to 10 years.
The biggest challenge that we face is convincing the generous backers in kickstarter to donate to our cause. We have so many ideas and thoughts on how we can help the community once our designs and our line of shoes are finally produced. However, being a small startup organization, it is difficult to find manufacturers that are willing to work with you. Since we were able to find the Italian manufacturer, we became very excited and hopeful of how we can reach our end goal. However, at this time, we can not go into production without a little help. Once this kickstarter is fulfilled, we will be able to come out with more exciting designs and more competitive pricing. Additionally, we will be able to help those less fortunate.
Our other challenge is that we must meet minimum production amounts of 7 orders per shoe for that specific shoe to go into production. If we do make it to the amount needed in this kickstarter, we will need to make sure that we supply the backers with the shoe they chose. The biggest issue is if we don't get enough orders for one shoe to go into production. In this case, we may have to ask backers to choose a different shoe for their reward.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
