About this project
Under My Bed is a bluffing and deduction microgame in which most of the players at the table will take on the roles of monsters. One player is secretly a kid in a monster costume however, and they are trying to figure out which monster is hiding underneath their bed.
Players will take turns asking one another questions until either the monsters figure out which player is the kid, or the kid can determine which monster is under their bed. The same question cannot be asked twice in the same game, and while the kid can lie as much as they like, the monsters are forced to tell some version of the truth.
Under My Bed takes less than 10 minutes to play, and is suitable for 3-8 players ages 8 and up.
At the beginning of the game, deal one monster card per player face up in the center of the table. Players will have the chance to take pictures of the monster line-up, and then the monsters will get shuffled and one will be placed randomly face down in the middle of the table. This monster is now “under the bed.”
Shuffle the kid card in with the remaining monsters and then deal one card to each player. Players will then take turns asking each other questions to try and figure out who the monsters are and who the kid is. While the monsters must answer with some version of the truth, the kid is free to lie as much as they like. Example questions might be:
“How many eyes do you have?”
“Is it day or night?”
“Are you furry?”
Once a monster is pretty sure they know who the kid is, they can make an accusation and the other players will vote. If they are correct, the monsters win. If they are wrong, the monsters lose. Alternatively, the kid can stop the game at any time and announce which monster they believe is hiding underneath their bed. If they’re right, then they win.
Under My Bed is a complete game which can easily fit in your pocket or bag. It features awesomely adorable hand-painted artwork from Beth Hawley, and comes with the following:
- 3 Rules Cards - including a “bed” card which you can place a monster under.
- 1 Kid Card
- 8 Monster Cards
- 3 Monster Reference Cards
- 1 Hard Plastic Carrying Case
If you pledge at least $5 you’ll receive a deluxe version of Under My Bed, which includes all of the above, plus 3 additional Monster Cards:
*To offset the cost of shipping to International backers, all International orders will receive the deluxe version of Under My Bed regardless of the amount pledged.
First off, the game was never really intended to be sold. I designed Under My Bed to be something I could personally print and always have with me to play at places like restaurants, parties, or in lines at conventions. Once I contacted Beth about doing some artwork and began to share her illustrations with my friends however, everyone really wanted to have a copy of their own. I want to make the game available to as many people as possible, and so I’m really just trying to cover the costs of printing. This is one of the main reasons I decided to try out a "pay what you want" model. That said, if everybody paid $1 I would actually lose a few cents per game, so I am hoping that some folks will believe the game is worth a few bucks. (This is also why I have the deluxe “bonus monster” edition)
The second reason I am bringing this game to Kickstarter is because I have another larger game that I will be launching in early 2017 called The Last Garden. While I have backed over 60 projects and done exhaustive research about running a Kickstarter campaign, I wanted my first project to be something small that I knew I could deliver without any issues. (Barring something catastrophic like real monsters underneath my real bed) I want to be able to go through the campaign from creation to fulfillment, in order to give myself the best chance of succeeding on the more ambitious projects I have coming up in the future.
I think Kickstarter is an incredible platform for creators to bring their projects to life, and I love that there are still ways we can experiment with the platform. Who knows, if this campaign goes well perhaps it could open up an opportunity to design more small games in the future, and those could also be released as pay what you want games.
That’s me! I’ve been around games my whole life. I work for a pair of game stores (Card Kingdom and Mox Boarding House, both near Seattle, WA) and I host a tabletop games podcast called NPC Cast. Basically, my personal and professional life both revolve around the gaming community and I’m lucky to have the opportunity to champion tabletop games as an inclusive hobby that embraces players of all experience levels. I really feel that gaming can be a force for good, and I try to portray my hobby as positively as possible.
I also co-founded a company called One Thousand XP. Our mission is to make tabletop content and games that inspire imagination and encourage creativity. We want more people to make neat things.
My Name is Beth Hawley, I am an 'Illustrator in the making' from England (Manchester). I've recently graduated from Salford University with a degree in illustration. My work is primarily watercolour and ink designs of a range of subject matters, but my specialty over the years has developed into monster and fantasy designs. I design my own children's books, book covers and all things book and story related, so the opportunity to illustrate a card game was an exciting project for me. You can find more of my work here:

Risks and challenges
This is my first time ever running a Kickstarter campaign, and I thank you for putting your trust in my ability to deliver Under My Bed in a reasonable time frame. The reason I have chosen this project as my first is because I am able to address the three largest issues which tend to derail successful campaigns:
1) The art and the design of the game is fully completed. Under My Bed is a light social game with beautiful artwork by Beth Hawley...and it is completely done. All the art has been paid for, and the printing files for the game have been compiled and are ready to submit as soon as the campaign is over.
2) The game will be manufactured in the USA by DriveThruCards. DriveThruCards is a high quality print-on-demand service with a proven track record. I’ve ordered from them on multiple occasions and am always quite impressed with their speed of service and quality.
3) Fulfillment will be done by Card Kingdom’s world class shipping operation. Shipping is another area which can sometimes cause issues for completed Kickstarter campaigns, but I am lucky to work for a company with a world class shipping department. Card Kingdom ships thousands of packages around the world on a weekly basis, and has fulfilled a variety of large Kickstarter campaigns already, including Pairs from Cheap Ass Games (Over 7,700 backers). Because the game is so small, there should be absolutely no issues involving import taxes, regardless of where you may live.
I know that you’re trusting me with your money and I am in turn promising to deliver a quality product within a reasonable amount of time. I want to take this opportunity to thank you once again, for helping me turn this cute little idea into a cute little game.
