We've Been Here Before
Backers of our first successful Kickstarter project received their products on time and as promised. We are proud to say the reviews were awesome. At Noxgear we know what it takes to properly plan and execute a new product launch. Rest assured we will make good on your pledge.
We gathered local dog owners to try out our prototype Spot360 Dog Vest. Check out what they said:
Spot360 | From Idea to Product
In April of last year we had just reached our funding goal for our first Kickstarter project, the Tracer360 Visibility Vest, when we heard the unmistakeable noises of a distressed pooch nearby. We found Nox, a beautiful beagle, with his broken chain wrapped around a fence post. We were lucky enough to have him for a few days until his owner picked him up. Although Nox was only with us for a short time, he inspired us to begin developing the Spot360 - a comfortable, durable vest with multicolor illumination, industry-leading reflectivity and bright fabric. Please read on to see what Nox started!
The concept design for the illuminated vest evolved over the next year. In February 2014 we reached out to our loyal supported to get input in the earliest part of development to guide the design. After reviewing the survey results we quickly began to put pen to paper for detailed concept designs. Within a couple of weeks we had built our first prototype. It didn't look great, but it was just what we needed. It felt good to have a physical product to feel and inspect. We continued to refine the product concept over the next few months with more prototypes and a lot of crumpled up paper. By mid-August we had settled on a vision for the final product and spent many hours developing the final prototypes - fabrics, sewing, electronics, batteries, buckles, adjustors, fiber optics, 3D printed designs. It was a lot of hard work but the end was in sight - and we knew we had achieved a really unique, effective design that our customers would love. As a final step we tested the finished prototypes with local dog owners and asked for their feedback. We received a literal and figurative thumbs up. We were go for launch - well other than the tireless effort of planning out a Kickstarter project...something we've done before. The journey has been fun, exciting and enlightening and we're glad to be back here again, on Kickstarter, to launch our latest visibility product - the Spot360 Dog Vest!
Product Features - Detailed Description
Because a car can come from any direction, we've taken extreme care to make sure our special fiber optic illumination is visible from any direction. Our unique design is something you won't find anywhere else, and we're proud to say that we've got you covered.
Long Battery Life and Micro-USB Rechargeable
Get up to 12 hours of battery life with a single charge. Our patent pending electronics are designed to always maximize brightness while efficiently piping light from LEDs through our fiber optics. Recharging the lithium battery is easy with a standard micro-usb charger (cable included) – common with most cell-phones. And just to be sure, our electronics indicate battery level, so you’re never surprised on a walk by a drained battery.
Multicolor Blinking Modes & Solid Colors
Visual science studies tell us that green and yellow are the most visible in low-light conditions, especially when the flashing patterns are unique and asynchronous. We’ve included modes inspired by visual science to promote maximum visibility. We’ve also included several other exciting flashing modes along with solid colors, all in one vest, and all selectable at the push of a button.
360° 3M™ Scotchlite™ Retroreflectivity
Nearly every stitch and edge is trimmed with the industry leading 3M™ Scotchlite retroreflective material. This material contains thousands of tiny glass beads that are specially engineered optical prisms that reflect light back to the source, regardless of the direction. So your dog is sure to light up like a candle the instant they are in headlights.
We’ve included two equally sized sections of high quality fluorescent material that appear to glow at dusk or early in the morning. Our special material converts invisible UV light into visible light, giving your dog vest that eye-searing glow when it’s really important.
Lightweight & Breathable
The design of the vest focuses on maximizing visibility while minimizing material and bulk. Every square inch of the vest contributes to its visibility. The result is an incredibly lightweight vest constructed of breathable material to ensure your dog will be cool and energized.
Rainproof & All-Season
Getting caught in elements doesn’t bother this vest. Just like our previous product, the Tracer360 this vest is designed to withstand rain and snow.
Durable & Machine Washable – Built with Cordura® Fabric
The breathable Cordura® fabric is one of the industry’s most durable materials. It’s applications range from military to camping gear. It’s also machine washable - for those times that your pups have been out playing in the mud.
Multiple Sizes – Highly Adjustable
A host of sizes are available that are optimized to fit nearly any dog. Each vest size includes a special slide so you’re sure to adjust your Spot360 to fit just right. Our vests will cover neck sizes measuring from 15.0 to 30.5 inches and chest sizes measuring from 15.0 to 41.0 inches. A sizing chart will be provided to backers at the end of the campaign indicating where to measure their dogs so they can select the best size.
Noxgear was founded by two engineers, Simon Curran and Tom Walters, and launched on Kickstarter in 2013. We are proud to say our first successful Kickstarter product launch, the Tracer360, has been delivered to running and cycling enthusiasts all over the world and is still going strong. Recently the Tracer360 was featured in the popular runners magazine Running Times.
Noxgear is headquartered in the birthplace of aviation: Dayton, Ohio. We’re proud to say this company is based on a strong foundation and we take pride in delivering great products to our customers. Learn more at www.noxgear.com/aboutus.
Being true engineers at heart we focused relentlessly on the quality and function of the Spot360 Dog Vest. We started by listening to our enthusiastic customers and then got down to work. After many months of hard work building and testing prototypes and discussing in amazing detail every part of the design we are proud of the vest that has become the Spot360 Dog Vest.
Meet the Team
Risks and challenges
Of course one of the more important pieces of a Kickstarter project is the delivery date. We give a high-level look at our schedule in a graphic above and rest assured that this schedule is conservative. This is not our first time fulfilling a Kickstarter project and we know what it takes to deliver on time.
Major challenges and risks with the design have been identified and mitigated via prototype builds. The remaining hurdles are centered on design for manufacturing such as part fit tolerances, material selection, draft and assembly. These are typical challenges during the refinement phase of the design and ones that we’ve overcome in our previous successful Kickstarter project. We see no issues with successfully completing this phase of the design process on our way to production readiness.
We’ve overcome the majority of risk related to electronics by leveraging our past circuit design. Prototype boards have already been delivered from our production supplier. The circuit board is powered by a standard lithium battery and we have a plan in place to ensure this part of the electronics is safe and effective.
The enclosure will be made up of plastic and silicone parts. We have been through the process of successfully procuring these types of parts in the past and see no roadblocks with this part of the project. As mentioned above the functional design is complete and we will soon begin to refine that design for production.
Sewing, Fabrics & Purchased Components:
The method for sewing has been established through the creation of refined prototypes. Final fabric selections have been made but still need to be properly sourced. Coordination of fabric sourcing will occur through our sewing sub-contractor as well as final sample approval before production begins. The remaining purchased components (i.e. buckles, slide adjustors) are readily available and will be sourced through our sewing shop suppliers.
Final Assembly & Fulfillment
We learned a lot about this part from our previous Kickstarter project. The refinement phase of the design will ensure that we can properly and efficiently assemble the vest. We have built up a solid track record of quality assembly with our Tracer360 Visibility Vest and we will leverage that experience to quickly make it through the typical learning curve of assembling a new product. We’ve learned quite a bit about shipping and fulfillment as well over the past two years and have a solid system in place for handling the shipment of a high volume of orders.
