About this project
Our Kickstarter campaign is over, but you can still get Notion. Head over to notion.is for more info and to place your order.
The Notion of Home Intelligence is Now a Reality
Home intelligence is a concept that hasn’t been possible until now. For years, security systems have only detected things like doors opening, windows breaking or alarms going off. These alerts only skim the surface of what Notion is capable of.
With Notion, you can know things like how full a propane tank is, when your child returns from school, the second there is a water leak, if a gun safe has been accessed and much more. In fact, this is exactly why we built Notion; to allow you to monitor what you want in a way that makes sense for you and your family.
As Featured on...
The connected home, the intelligent home, is an amazing concept.
Unfortunately, it’s still that…just a concept. Until now. Notion was designed to make you aware of what’s happening with your home and your family, with minimal effort from you.
A Notion system includes:
- Hub, a small central point of communication for all sensors that connects to the internet via wifi
- Multi-function sensor, each capable of detecting 8 customized actions
- Mobile applications for iOS and Android that makes you intelligent
We designed Notion to look great, but also be inconspicuous. The small size allows you to put sensors anywhere you can think of without concern that they'll get in the way.
Since each Notion sensor detects several different actions, we’re able to send more accurate alerts based on redundant measurements. A door opening isn’t just detected by an accelerometer, we measure a change in orientation of the door and a change in proximity. And, since each sensor detects so many things, you need fewer sensors. For example, a single Notion sensor placed on a front door can tell you:
- If someone knocks on the door
- If the door is opened and if it was you, a family member or someone else who opened it
- If it doesn’t get shut
- The temperature of the room it’s in
- If a light is turned on or left on too long in that room
- If a smoke alarm goes off
Sensors are easily installed anywhere by simply peeling off non-harmful adhesive and pressing firmly.
Your system will alert you of important events and knows when you're away from home. With Notion, there is no need to manually arm and disarm your system.
You can set up custom alert preferences. Notion learns about you over time to ensure you only get information that’s important to you.
Alert groups can also be set up. If you aren’t able to respond to an event, messages will be passed on to a spouse, child, neighbor or other contact.
Since you can use one sensor for different appliactions, you aren’t forced to pick and choose how to format your devices. You simply decide how you want to be notified and Notion will do the rest. If you end up placing sensors in areas that aren’t useful to you, simply rename them with the mobile app and place them in a new spot.
Notion sensors contain multiple, advanced sensors that are able to detect:
The 7 advanced sensors inside each Notion multi-function sensor are:
- Accelerometer can tell you if your garage door is opened
- Ambient light sensor knows if lights have been left on when they shouldn't be
- Gyroscope measures if a door or window opens
- Temperature sensor can tell you if your HVAC system is down by detecting if the temperature of your house is getting too hot or cold
- Piezoelectric transducer measures natural frequency and tells you things like how full a propane tank is or if a smoke alarm is going off
- Proximity sensor will alert you if a gun safe is opened
- Water leak probes instantly alerts you the second there is a leak
Each sensor lasts two years so you don’t have to worry about charging or replacing batteries all the time.
Notion's hub is the central point of communication for your sensors. It connects to your Wi-Fi and has cellular and battery backup in case your power or internet goes down.
Who is Notion for?
Notion provides homeowners a solution that doesn't have expensive long-term contracts, intimidating sales tactics or complex installations.
Vacation Home Owners
Most vacation home owners don't have any way to know what's going on with their properties when they aren't there. Notion is perfect for knowing when guests come and go, if the cleaning service visited on time, if the HVAC system isn't working correctly or if a light was left on during a vacancy.
Notion is the perfect solution if you rent. You can start small with just a few sensors, easily move the system anywhere you move and can add sensors as needed.
Small and medium-sized businesses
Notion was created to solve the needs of homeowners. It turns out small and medium-sized businesses have a lot of the same needs! Notion is an inexpensive system that provides you with data about your business like traffic counts, energy waste and store movements.
How Many Sensors do I Need?
Here are some common use cases for our different kits to give you an idea of how many sensors you might need:
- 1 hub + 1 sensor: you have a gun safe, liquor cabinet, wine cellar or propane tank that you want to monitor
- 1 hub + 3 sensors: perfect for renters who have a couple of doors and a bathroom that could have a water leak
- 1 hub + 5 sensors: for the homeowner that wants basic home monitoring on two doors, one bathroom for leaks and a window
- 1 hub + 10 sensors: complete home intelligence covering propane tank, liquor cabinet and water leak monitoring plus the basic functions of home security
For the past year, our team has been working extremely hard interviewing customers, prototyping, testing, building, rebuilding and manufacturing Notion.
Where We Are Today
We recently manufactured the fourth version of our product. Alpha testing will commence on v4 this month.
We've already done in-home testing with previous prototypes and can’t wait to get this final version into the hands of real customers!
Stretch Goal #1!
Help vote on the limited edition color by leaving a comment for us or sending an email to Hello@Notion.is. The color can be anything you'd like to see!
Voting ends 24 hours after we reach our stretch goal.
We’ll start our EVT (Engineering Validation Testing) to incorporate all of our learnings from testing. Along the way and into the end of the year, we will be making improvements to the UX and UI.
We will move into the DFM (Design for Manufacturing) process to optimize our enclosures and ensure proper tooling design. Then, a secondary EVT and PVT (Production Validation Testing) will be completed to ensure we are ready for a ramp-up in manufacturing.
From there, things get really exciting...full beta testing, production and shipping!
Build with Notion
We'll give you access to your data through our API. We love when other products put out APIs for us to build and improve on and we wanted to be sure we return the favor!
We'd also like to get your feedback on what you think you'd be interested in building using Notion's unique set of home intelligence data. Drop us a line on Twitter @notion anytime!
Our team is made up of passionate engineers, designers and marketers based in Denver, CO. We have all helped create, build and manufacture many successful consumer, electronic and mobile application products that are sold worldwide both online and in retail stores.
We believe everyone deserves home intelligence. In order to make this a reality, we knew we had to get Notion in front of as many people as we could. The exciting thing about the concept of home intelligence is that it's different for each person. One person may care more about water leaks and the next about monitoring their liquor cabinet.
We decided to launch Notion on Kickstarter because we believe it will help us make the best possible product through community feedback and involvement.
From all of us at Notion, thank you for your support!
Risks and challenges
Hardware is hard! But, we have and will continue to work diligently to make sure we continue to de-risk the making of Notion as much as possible. We are currently in the Techstars Boulder program and are receiving invaluable mentorship and connections. We just completed the Dragon Innovation Certification Program that gives us an even higher level of confidence in our costs and timeline.
Notion's team of engineers and manufacturing and operations experts have designed and manufactured multiple electronics and consumer goods products. We know what it takes to build something amazing! That said, there are still risks associated with manufacturing, certifying, testing and shipping a physical product. If any unexpected issues pop up, we'll do everything in our power to ship as close to our delivery dates as possible.
We have already contracted manufacturing partners that have manufactured the final version of our product. Our partners have made countless consumer electronics products and are capable of scaling with our business.
We appreciate your support and can't wait to get you Notion!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
While all of our backers will have different needs, we expect the average to be between 3-10 sensors. The great thing about Notion though is that the platform is easily expandable, flexible and customizable. If you decide you’d live to be aware of more things around your home, adding sensors to your network is a breeze.
The base is wall-powered and can be placed anywhere in your home. The sensor is battery operated. We’ve built the sensor to be as passive in power consumption as possible meaning comfort and peace of mind knowing the batteries don’t need to be replaced often.
Our hub accepts universal voltage and frequency inputs. We're actively working on regional specific adapters to make use as easy as possible!
We're shooting for a battery life of about 2 years with normal use.
Yes! Batteries will be coin cells that are readily found at retail chains across the country. Think watch batteries.
Notion has been accepted into the HomeKit program and we’re excited to continue the pursuit to be fully certified. We look forward to connecting with other devices on the market – all in the spirit of giving each fan the connectivity they need.
We’ve built Notion with complete home intelligence in mind. Each network can handle hundreds of sensors in case one of our fans wants to be aware of EVERYTHING!
The HomeKit platform will allow us to communicate with other WiFi connected devices. Accordingly, we can aid other smart home products like thermostats, outlets, and more.
Glad you asked! Yes, each Notion can handle any and all tasks you can assign to it. The same Notion on your front door can tell you if a light is left on or the temperature drops. It’s easy to add tasks at any time through the mobile app.
We’ve built in a number of fail safes including data encryption, false packet transmission and signal jamming. Our goal is to provide as secure of an experience as possible and we pledge to stay up to speed on all cutting edge security protocols.
If a battery is removed, an alert will be transmitted notifying the owner accordingly. Our technology allows us to differentiate between an offline sensor due to battery removal versus other hazards such as a downed network.
Once a sensor has been installed and labeled, we’ll know immediately if it moves off the course of its intended motion. That means anyone removing a sensor will create an immediate alert sent to the system owner.
The data is stored in the Notion cloud where all of our intelligence is held. Our backend is smart enough to learn what you like and don’t like about notification timing, frequency, method of transmission (text, email, or push notification) and much, much more.
The API is open and available for those interested in diving into the details. We look forward to hearing how you use Notion to be aware of your home and can only do that through open connectivity and full transparency on our end.
No, we only collect sound based on certain thresholds that will automatically adjust overtime. Our audio processing searches for certain patterns (like a smoke alarm) which emit a signal over a particular decibel on a repeated pattern. Notion is built to be non-intrusive. We don’t store sounds, only process audio to determine if a specific event has occurred.
Notion prides itself on complete security from sensor to base, base to cloud and cloud to you. Our engineers have implemented encrypted data transfer, cutting edge protocols for backend data security, and fully redundant, easily deployed hosting partners to ensure Notion is always there when you need it.
Yes! Our app will allow you to seamlessly transition between systems and stay in the know at as many locations as you’d like.
Yes! We have two options here. 1) Setup a hierarchy to alert other people in your circle of trust. If you aren't able to respond to an alert within a specific time period, the alert is passed down your list. 2) If you receive an alert, you can manually pass it on to another trusted person through the mobile app.
At initial launch, we likely won’t have additional languages. We want to accommodate everyone though and have every intention of adding languages soon.
Once the Kickstarter campaign concludes, we’ll send out a survey requesting the best shipping information from each backer.
We sincerely hope so!
