Our short film follows the Master Chief when he is at a crossroad and seeks out Dr. Halsey. We'll have flashbacks exploring events in his life that shaped him to become the hero he is.
Why make an Independent Halo SHORT film?
The Halo Universe has a rich, largely unexplored mythology. We believe that the history of the hero—the Master Chief—deserves a grounded, cinematic take. For this to succeed, we’re going to need your help. This project may start with us, but it can’t happen without you.
We estimate the run time will be 20 minutes. We decided to make a short film instead of a feature because it allows us to balance a compelling story and high production value with a modest budget.
We’re using Kickstarter to not only map out our production plans but also to sustain the intensive post-production work until it's finished. A majority of the technical aspects--cinematography, editing, color grading of the-- project were handled by only a few people. Funding allows us to get help in some of these areas.
Apart from complying with Microsoft’s gaming intellectual property license to create fanworks for non-profit, our other main reason for turning to Kickstarter is to use crowdfunding as a way to create the short film we envision. We will NOT make any profit from this—the short film will be released publicly.
The big question is: what do we do with YOUR money? Funding allows us to greatly improve, and execute a high level production. A few good looking shots for a trailer is much easier than creating a cohesive short film. We've made a chart that details the breakdown below:
We'll be shooting with Blackmagic Design's Ursa Mini 4.6K which provides elite tier image quality. Our focus will always be on a compelling story, but your funding will allow significant improvements in production value, the ability to expand our team in some technical areas, and a few special surprises we have in store for Halo fans. With the minimum amount of funding, a majority of the work will still be on a volunteer basis.
Scale of budget
To give a sense of scale, the typical cost of a 30-second commercial can be well over $100,000. We're asking for a minimum of $35,000 for a 15-20 minute film, though we hope to raise much more. We can reduce the cost of production by doing a significant number of things in-house and taking more time for some elements of production. Higher amounts of funding mean higher quality and faster post-production.
First things first—video games are different from short movies, especially SHORT films, and we can't approach one the same way we'd approach the other. Our takeaway after looking at various video game-to-film adaptations is that that there wasn't enough focus on the characters.
Proof of Concept: Rising to the Occasion
We created the Proof of Concept video not only to excite backers but also to prove our own crew. Creating a strong team is incredibly difficult, and we needed to test ourselves to be sure we could endure production obstacles. Going live with a project like this means we are accountable to YOU, the backers, and we simply could not proceed without proving ourselves first.

Our team is diverse, comprised of award-winning filmmakers, military members, master builders and many more. A strong team is the most important foundation for a film, especially an independent one—a film is in many ways a marathon, not a sprint, and we have assembled a group of tenacious, dedicated craftspeople.
Every person on our team is a specialist, an MVP, and a utility player--capable of self--delegating and filling in gaps and holes where needed. We amplify and teach each other, sharing skills and improving together.
World's Tallest Spartan & EVAKura Armor
Joining us on this adventure will be a next-gen, fully mobile Halo 5 Master Chief armor. This suit will be created by Master builder Phil Shinner of EVAKura Armor and worn by body actor John Groves of the World's Tallest Spartans. This suit, along with their expertise, bridges the gap between the cinematic and video game realms. The one seen in the video took over 4000 hours to create!
We have several team members spanning across the USA, including the incredible visual effects artist Jake Ferguson.
It took us over 1 year to make the Proof of Concept video because we could only film when people were available. Funding will allow us to film during a singular period of time.
With the support of Kickstarter, we’re projected to publicly and freely release the short film in Fall of 2018.
We’re nothing less than awed at how much support and positivity we’ve received from the community. Whether you’re lifelong fans like us, new fans, or just want to support independent artists, we truly believe that your support is the key to helping us produce something truly memorable and worth adding to the Halo experience.
We appreciate your support and love :D
How can I help?
Please share! Let’s show all our friends and family this campaign and let them know how awesome the Halo community really is. We can’t wait to put this short film together for all of us!
Funny Shorts we've made.
UNLOCK THE COVENANT POST-CREDIT SCENE — $150K
We'll include a short scene (2-5 minutes) AFTER the credits of the short film introducing the Covenant into the Halo cinematic universe. We have an exciting take that we believe fans will love. Reaching this tier will allow us to significantly increase our production value. This is not a part of the main short film.
UNLOCK THE FLOOD POST-CREDIT SCENE — $80K
We'll include a short scene (2-5 minutes) AFTER the credits of the short film introducing the Flood into Halo cinematic universe. We have an exciting take that we believe fans will love. Reaching this tier will allow us to greatly increase our production value. This is not a part of the main short film.
UNLOCK VIRTUAL REALITY/360 — $50K
We'll include a short and exciting VR sequence into everyone's reward package. In addition, reaching this tier will allow us to increase our production value. This is not a part of the main short film.
