Driven by the lack of female role models in graphic design, notamuse is a project that critically investigates the visibility of women graphic designers in the design public. While there are many women working in the field, the public discourse as we encounter it on conferences and blogs, in design books and design history, is still dominated by men. With notamuse we try to find reasons for this phenomenon by interviewing women designers, design historians and sociologists. More than that we keep our eyes open for outstanding contemporary women graphic designers. As a result we created the book notamuse – A New Perspective on Women Graphic Designers in Europe and the website www.notamuse.de.
notamuse – The Book
To make the public perception of design and the discourse within design more diverse, we find it necessary to focus on the great women graphic designers who are out there – to give them a stage, role models to young designers and inspirational work and attitudes to all of us.
notamuse – A New Perspective on Women Graphic Designers in Europe showcases the work of more than 50 women designers, such as Isabel Seiffert (Offshore Studio), Tereza Ruler (The Rodina), Caterina Bianchini and many more, as well as 22 stimulating interviews on design, work life and feminism.
Hard facts about the book:
- showcasing the graphic work of 53 women designers in Europe
- including 22 interviews on design, work life and feminism
- preface by Dr. Sarah Owens (ZHDK Zurich)
- 22 x 31 cm (approx. 8,6 x 12,2 inch) in size, 416 pages (it's big!)
- hardcover book
- English language
- to be published by niggli in spring 2019 (if this Kickstarter is successful)
- SPECIAL DISCOUNT PRICE: 40 CHF (35 Euro) + shipping, instead of 50 Euro (approx. 57 CHF) retail price in 2019
Please note that these renderings are the current progress status and might change slightly for finalization.
We are happy to announce that we will be featuring 47 graphic design studios (53 women designers in total) from all over Europe. Our contributors are working independently on their own, in an all female collective or in an equally working male-female studio. Next to already well-known names, we are going to present you some exciting newcomers!
Please note that there is the possibility of slight changes in the list of contributors, due to the ongoing layouting and communication process.
For a better understanding and a more intense reflection of the topic, we interviewed 22 designers, sociologists, design researchers and theoreticians within the last two years on topics like design, everyday work life, feminism and motherhood. These interviews are also part of the notamuse book.
To support us in realizing notamuse – A New Perspective on Women Graphic Designers in Europe you can preorder your copy of the book here or choose one of the following packages:
It's never too early to buy presents! The Holiday-Season-Set includes a notamuse book as well as a screen printed voucher for the book, which we will send to you immediately after the campaign ends, so you can give it to your loved ones right on time. The book then will be delivered in spring 2019 after production.
The Fan-Set comes with one copy of the notamuse book, a fancy red tote bag, a handwritten thank-you card, six stickers and an A2 poster (folded down to A4).
Think of your better half and buy two copies of the book, twelve stickers and two tote bags, to spread the good news around the world!
We are more than happy that we could win three of our contributors – Ines Cox (Belgium), Rita Matos (Portugal) and Anja Kaiser (Germany) – to provide some of their posters for this Kickstarter. With the purchase of one Poster Collaboration, you will receive one of these three posters. After your purchase we will get in touch with you via email so you can let us know which one of the three you would like to receive. The posters come in A1 format and in a high quality ink jet print (rgb/eight colour pigment ink system). PLEASE NOTE: This package does not include a copy of the book!
Please note that shipping to the US might take up to 4 weeks longer (that's because we want to keep the shipping costs as low as possible).
Make it happen!
We – that's Silva, Claudia and Lea – started this personal initiative in strong conviction that gender equality in design and therefore in any other parts of society is possible. We want to raise awareness, to trigger a discourse and most of all we demand a more diverse design scene. Help us reach our aspiration and be part of it!
We already teamed up with Swiss publishing house niggli, who supports us in producing and distributing the book all over the world. Now we need you to help us fund our share of the production costs.
On Kickstarter, it's all or nothing. Only if we reach the funding goal, will we receive the money and be able to produce. So every cent counts and supports us. Share this campaign and tell all your friends for more female empowerment! <3
Thanks for the track in our video to the other shi!
The Hamburg based duo creates odd little gems of synth-pop that are at once aggressive and melancholy. In our video you heard their new track you lie, coming out soon. Check out www.theothershi.com
Risks and challenges
We started notamuse in strong belief that gender equality in the graphic design scene is possible and absolutely overdue. We are working on this initiative besides our everyday jobs and studies. Nevertheless we want this Kickstarter to be as smooth, professional and transparent as possible for you. So here is the present situation:
The book is almost ready to be printed – the content (graphic works and interviews) is complete, the layout is ready to shine and some last texts are getting translated into English at the moment. We as the editors are in charge of all these steps and highly motivated about bringing this good stuff to all your homes!
Additionally, we teamed up with design, art and architecture publishing house niggli from Switzerland to spread the book all over the world. In niggli we found an extensively experienced and trustworthy partner who is responsible for the financial transactions, production, packing, distribution and shipping the book to wherever you are.
Nevertheless we have to fund our (notamuse's) share of the production costs and that's what this Kickstarter is all about. If we make it with your help, 18.500 Euro of the funding goal will be transferred to niggli, so their team can start production in January 2019. The rest of the funding pays our Kickstarter and banking fees as well the production of the packages.
If this Kickstarter is successful, notamuse will produce the give-aways in December 2018 and send some of them (thank-you cards and vouchers) to you right away. The book will be produced in January and be ready for shipping (with the rest of the give-aways) in February/March 2019. The book will be available in regular book shops from March/April 2019 on for 50 Euros. If it comes to any lags and delays within this timing for whatever reasons, we will contact and update you on the details right away.
If you have any questions left, do not hesitate to contact us any time! We try to get back to you as soon as possible.
Thank you for being part of this.
