Frequently Asked Questions
The default fountain wood color is a plain Baltic Birch plywood. Refer to this:
It will be pre-sanded so that you can simply stain/dye/paint the wood immediately. Do take care of using any water-based products though as they will tend to "raise the grain" requiring further sanding. Also, after coloring the wood with stain/dye/paint, it is HIGHLY recommended to use a water-resistant sealer such as polyurethane, polycrylic, lacquer, etc. This is to prevent any unexpected splashes from causing blemishes/expansion of the wood.
Alternatively, you may add $50 CAD on top of your pledge and we will handle all the labor of dyeing and finishing for you.Last updated:
As with any indoor fountain product, as long as Aquarius is operated within a non-extreme environment, there is no risk.
Aquarius should be kept on a stable foundation that doesn't vibrate such that it does not unexpectedly fall over.
Users should also not pick Aquarius up and shake it while it is on since that may cause water to splash everywhere.Last updated:
Users can touch the stream! But have a towel handy since that WILL cause some splashing. Also remember that any splashing will cause depletion of the water. Excessive depletion of the water will require a fill-up.Last updated:
Aquarius can be filled up by directly pouring water into its funnel. There is a transparent window in the back where you can see the level of water. As long as the level is near the top, everything should be fine.
Aquarius can usually operate until the water level hits roughly halfway. Any more than that and the following effects start to happen:
1. The water stream begins to stutter due to intake of air bubbles.
2. The pump struggles a bit more (due to the air bubbles) leading to a whining noise.
3. The water stream starts to spit in directions away from the funnel (this is due to very little water in the outlet that breaks up the viscosity).
4. The pump *may* seize up since there is no water to transfer away its heat (dry-running condition).
Aquarius will auto-shutdown the water stream roughly every hour (but the light will be kept on) to lower the chance of the above from happening. This auto-shutdown timer can be changed to different values in the Arduino source code.Last updated:
If you have already pledged for an Aquarius, simply adjust the pledge by adding $50 CAD on top of that and we will go through the labor of dyeing and finishing the wood.
The colors that we currently offer (subject to change) are: Walnut, Charcoal Black, Royal Blue, and Emerald Green. A survey will be sent out after the campaign so that users can choose which colors they want.
In the campaign video and pictures, the color shown there is Walnut.Last updated:
We have a warranty of 3 months from the date you receive Aquarius. The warranty will cover any malfunction except for ones due to user negligence.Last updated:
Currently, Aquarius cannot be opened up. The whole system, once assembled, will be sealed entirely. Any attempt to open it up may cause Aquarius to malfunction.Last updated:
We don't have an option currently for that but we are open to selling individual parts at some point in the future. We tried to stray away from providing kits outright due to the high chances of assembly error. Disregarding that, the cost savings (to the user) for a kit were not high enough to justify the added support required.Last updated:
In a short answer, yes. However, we would only be selling them to clear up inventory. Other than that, we have no plan to continue producing and selling Aquarius outside of Kickstarter. Our long term plan (should this campaign succeed) would be to move forward with future projects such as Gemini, Aries, etc.
In other words, it's only available for a limited time!Last updated:
In a short answer, no. You might have seen some micro splashes in the video which was due to a slightly older funnel design at the time it was taken. We have a revised funnel design which essentially eliminates all visible splashes outside of Aquarius.
That being said however, when a user first turns it on, there may be 1 or 2 specks (the size of a rice grain) of splash due to prior water droplets stuck inside the outlet. These water droplets don't have a viscous connection to the stream and thus will veer away. After the initial 1 or 2 specks of splash, there shouldn't be anymore visible splashing.Last updated:
Yes, simply pledge an equivalent amount on top of your existing pledge. We will combine shipping for upwards of 3 Aquarius fountains.Last updated:
Aquarius is most effective in a dark room. That being said however, you can still see its effect in a warmly lit room but you'll also be able to see the outline of the actual stream as well. If you shine a flashlight directly on it, you will still see the effect but it will greatly reduced.
One way we've found that works very well is to place it in front of a dark background. Even in a fairly bright room, you'll still be able to see the effect since the dark background accentuates the stream and absorbs the room light at the same time.Last updated:
It's about as loud as rain drops on a window. We found that it can be a very relaxing "white-noise" generator. It can also be used as an ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) device!
The pump and the magnet themselves emit no audible noise because we have dampened the sound with foam in the fountain base.Last updated:
No. It operates at a much higher frequency than what is required to trigger a seizure. The strobe lights work from 75-100 Hz which is in-line with most computer monitors.
Basically, if you're reading this on a monitor, you can safely look at Aquarius :)Last updated:
It looks much better in real life, words can't even describe it. Any video that is taken of Aquarius in action will ALWAYS suffer from artifacts and lines running up and down the screen. Consumer camera technology hasn't reached a point where it can dynamically change shutter speed and frame rate capture based on incoming light (yet).
In real life, you should be able to see much better color reproduction, less color bleeding, more clear streams, and brighter ambient lighting.Last updated:
Yes! We'd rather have complete control over it than an offshore manufacturing company.
Nearly everything will be handmade/assembled/finished in Markham, Ontario (proudly Canadian!). Though this may cause longer than expected delivery times, it also ensures that Aquarius is of a quality that we will be satisfied with.Last updated:
