Art Wars is an adventure game set in the New York City Art World where you must navigate the art scene of Downtown NYC. Your goal as an artist is to earn 'cred' points and keep your cash flow positive while in a battle to keep your career and social life intact.
Can you survive and succeed, or are you doomed to life in a cubical? Art Wars is like Oregon Trail meets 2011. Some might even consider this an (almost too) realistic representation of life in NYC as an artist.
So how does the game work??
Every time you do something creatively credible in Art Wars you earn cred points. Hook up with a curator? Earn Cred. Get arrested while making art in China? Earn Cred. Your new BFF is a socialite who knows every gallery owner in Chelsea? Earn Cred. Do a juice detox and lose 20lbs in a week? Total win! (but won't get you cred, you'll just fit into sample sizes, which might earn you money if you get scouted as a model . . )
However, that's not all, when you check out your Art War stats during
the game, you can get a full unrelenting view of what a rock star you are
(or how close you are to having to ask the fam' for a loan). You can
share your stats with other players in the battle to become an immortal
artist in the only city that really matters: Ours.
Get Rich or Die Tryin' :
Art Wars is a game which strongly believes in the rules of the art world. So, while earning cred points you also have to think about money. So perhaps your work goes viral on the net (cred!) but you also have to replace all your furniture in the attempt to win the battle of bed bugs in your basement apartment (lose money). Maybe you get addicted to drugs (lose money) but your work gets more interesting and bam! gallery representation (gain money)! Yeah for drug habits?! In NYC they say you can never have three things at once: a good job, a decent apartment and a relationship... or can you?
Woah woah woah.. how is this going to happen?
First, this project is only going to be possible with your support. Really, its that serious. We need your help to pay for the programming and illustration development which will go into this project (which is a lot). Then there are things like server space, hosting, electricity and maybe even our lunch now and then..
To make the magic happen, our backgrounds are in software, hardware and design. So we plan to write a custom rendering engine utilizing open source software APIs to create both the game esthetics and game engine. At some point this engine will be released open source so you can make your own city
