The creation of an RPG character is an intensely personal endeavor. Countless hours are spent thinking about the look and feel of your character, what makes them special and unique, and how they approach and interact with the world. As customers ourselves we’ve always felt when looking at miniatures on the shelf that while there are products we use, they aren’t always products we love or that really captured the feeling of our characters. With that in mind we wanted to launch a miniature product line which would capture the imagination and wonder of our adventuring party and really bring a sense of character to each player. Adventurers & Adversaries is a product line designed to get you pumped to place your character on the battle mat when it’s time to roll for initiative!
We want to produce a line of miniatures that can be painted by anyone of any skill level regardless of previous experience; has miniatures for as many of the different heritages throughout as many RPG settings as possible; can tell a story of that heritage’s customs and society through their equipment style; and finally, provides customization options so the player can really create a model which represents themselves.
That’s right, with Adventurers & Adversaries you should be able to sit down with your new miniature, having never painted before, and be able to follow one of our basic tutorials and walk away with a model you’re proud of. You should be able to create a miniature that is representative of your Turtlefolk fighter, or your Ravenkind bard. When you look at your Dragonfolk miniature you should be able to tell that they’re an apex predator designed to hunt their prey, and that their armor is conducive to that heritage. We want you to be able to have options when it comes to how you create your model, or even have the ability to magnetize it so that you can change its appearance as you level, obtain new gear, or even take it to a new campaign with a different load out to be a new and exciting character!
We've gathered leading industry artists who’ve previously worked with companies such as Sideshow Collectibles, Cool Mini or Not, Warlord Games, Privateer Press, and Steamforged Games. This talented pool of artists has been working around the clock to bring our vision to life, and they’ve done a splendid job of it!
Once the sculpts were in place it was time to find a manufacture, and one of our company goals is that we make our products with people we know, trust and love. With over two decades of experience in the industry we knew just who to work with, and we’re proud to announce that production of the resin line will be done in the United States. Not only will this help us ensure we’re producing top quality miniatures, but we’ll also be able to target a very reasonable delivery window.
Please believe us when we say that we hope this is only the beginning. With these miniatures we’ve broken most heritage/class combinations into 3 broad categories that we’ll refer to as “light”, “medium”, and “heavy” based on their armor styles. What this means is that when we look at the creation of a miniature, we want to make sure that we’re providing appropriate arm options that would function well with that miniature and who we envision as the primary audience of that miniature. For example, Belgar the Dragonfolk fills the “heavy” slot for us. We envision that players picking up that miniature will primarily play heavily armored style classes such as fighter, cleric, or even paladin. As such the arm options primarily focus on loadouts commonly associated with those classes. There are multiple single hand weapons available, a pole arm, a two-handed sword, and even a shield option.
It’s our hope that at some point in the future we’ll also be able to release “light” and “medium” Dragonfolk as well which will allow us to be able to release up to an additional 8 arm sets which will be interchangeable with the current “heavy” version and vice versa! What models we make next though is entirely up to our backers…
So why Kickstarter you ask. We’ve got the artists, we have the sculptors, we have the vision, and we know the manufacturers, so why do we need to come to Kickstarter? The answer is capital. Yes, we have a ton of experience in the industry bringing products to market, but that work has always been done for the profit of others. I’m sure anyone who doesn’t own their own business can relate to the desire to feel a direct connection to your labor and to the products you create, and to the people who engage with those products.
For years we’ve had people come up to us at shows and tell us about their characters, we’ve played in hundreds of Adventures League games meeting thousands of players the world over, and we know from these conversations that there is a desire for a higher quality avatar for their characters, that people want to be able to really take ownership of that experience. And we have the background and the ability to execute and deliver on that desire. We don’t however have the capital to fund the entire project without backers like you!
We were fortunate enough that Norse Foundry® and Board Dog Games shared a desire to see this product line brought to life and made available for everyone and over the past few months we’ve been hard at work doing just that. This is where Gromur comes in. Gromur’s not just a mascot for Norse Foundry®, it’s a proof of concept that we can do this if only we could acquire the capital to do so. We’ve poured all of our available resources into the production of this miniature so that we can share that vision with our community, and now we need your help to continue to bring more of these wonderful characters to life so that everyone has the chance to have a model which truly represents their character.

Risks and challenges
I always find this section to be one of the most difficult to write. You have to lay bare your insecurities and worries for the world to see and explain how you plan to confront those potential shortcomings. It’s a very difficult and humanizing experience and it’s our hope that you’ll see all of the work we’ve done to prep for this Kickstarter and how that’s impacted our risk assessment.
By producing Gromur we were able to create a safe space within which to test out our hypothesis and work out the kinks. Figuring out the proper mixture to get the best detail, working with the sculptors to try and limit the impact of assembly for people new to the hobby, working with box makers to ensure the final product would work in retail stores; all of these challenges have already been overcome because of the preproduction of that proof of concept model.
What we are left with and what I am sure will be the #1 question associated with this Kickstarter is “When will you produce X style miniature” or “Why are you only starting with these 5 heroes”. The truthful answer is that this is what we know we can handle and produce in the time-frame we’ve set for delivery.
We did not want to set up a KS with 100 stretch goals to unlock 50 miniatures which could delay delivery of the Kickstarter a year or more. Instead we’ve extensively tested the production capabilities of our manufacturing partners in order to form a solid grasp of what numbers they can hit and what that time frame looks like. We’ve tracked the availability of our sculptors and artists who are all contributing to this project because they believe in its goals, but at the end of the day they still have to meet the obligations of their day jobs.
We know that we can get these proposed dice, the miniatures, and all of their alternate arms produced and delivered in the time frame we’ve set out barring an act of g-d (looking at you hurricane season). For us, outside of funding, we believe the main challenge left facing this product is that of you, our supporters. We need you to know that we are committed to bringing as many miniatures to life as possible, but that it is essential we set realistic expectations in terms of the delivery and production time of those miniatures. In order to make sure that we do not lose focus of the goal of this product line and that we are able to maintain our direct connection with you, our supporters, we’ve decided that it is you, our backers, who will decide the next wave of miniatures to be produced.
Our hope is that by putting our future production catalog directly in the hands of our supporters that everyone who contributes will feel a sense of ownership for this product line and that we’re making the models you want to see. As such, a survey will be sent out once Backerkit has closed wherein our backers will be able to vote for the next 4 models to be made, and rest assured, we hope to spend the next several years bringing people's characters to life on the tabletop!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
