What is this book about?
Christmas Readings is a collection of Scriptures organized for daily readings throughout Advent (the four weeks before Christmas Day). When complete, the reader will have surveyed key Old and New Testament Scriptures that remind us that Christ's birth, death, resurrection, and return have been promised from the beginning and are told of throughout the Bible. Unlike other available Advent books, these readings are Scripture-only.
The readings are structured so that they can be read daily by an individual or family in one sitting.
The book also provides an explanation of the Advent candles and suggestions for hymns and activities that can be incorporated into the observance of Advent.
My website http://www.christmasreader.com contains the daily readings and most of what is included in the book, but, we believe a printed version is still the most convenient way to have the readings available for oneself or to share with others.
My goal is to sell Christmas Readings for $10 or less, making it affordable to anyone interested for themselves or as a gift for those people in their lives who they would like to encourage to read the Bible.
Costs to fulfill this project include:
- Printing and shipping costs for the first 1000 copies
- Publisher fees
- Cost of permission for using the ESV Bible
- Purchasing an ISBN number and securing the copyright
- Cover art
Origins of the book
I rediscovered the term Advent and discovered it's meaning for the first time during the 15 years I home-schooled my three children. When they had all left for schools in other states, I wrote down all the passages we'd used for Advent reading through the years, wanting to make it easy for my children to continue the tradition. When friends asked for a copy of my collection, I realized I was not the only one who had never found an Advent book that was daily readings of only Scripture, organized as an overview of the Bible.
The passages in Christmas Readings are organized so that even those unfamiliar with the Bible can understand them. It is my hope that using my book during Advent will help readers to stay focused on Jesus and the Word of God during the hectic season that is, after all, supposed to be about Him. For those who are not in the practice of reading Scripture daily, this is a do-able way to begin that practice and will, hopefully, be an encouragement to continue reading the Bible after Christmas as well.
Risks and challenges
The normal risks in publishing and distributing a book apply to this project as well. However, I have selected an experienced publisher who is ready to print immediately. Because the book is a curation of Scripture that I have used within my own family, there is minimal risk of authoring or editing delay.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
