Hello

We are Nora.

Nora: Stephanie, Flora and Eleanor. Photo by Camilla Greenwell.

We are Stephanie McMann, Eleanor Sikorski and Flora Wellesley Wesley, three dancers who have been dancing together with zeal, humour and love for almost a decade.

We are raising money to do two things:

1) to rehearse and tour a new piece created for us by renowned American choreographer Deborah Hay, entitled Where Home Is.

2) to do a two-week research period with Sweden-based, American choreographer Eleanor Bauer.

Our project

Where Home Is is a trio for three dancers: a trio in which the ‘trio’ is our home. We sing it, dance it, see it and find each other in it.

We are thrilled to have premiered this new work at Sadler’s Wells, London, on 24 & 25 April 2019. We will tour the piece to Nottingham (NottDance Festival), Glasgow (Dance International Glasgow), Bristol and more. In preparation for these performances we will practice intensively in spring and autumn 2019 and at regular intervals throughout the year.

Nora will also spend two weeks in August working with Eleanor Bauer, an exciting opportunity to start a brand new collaboration, creating a piece that will be completed in 2020.

Your support

The creation of Where Home Is was a £50K project made possible by the generous support of our commissioning partners Sadler's Wells, DanceEast and Dance4, and funding from Arts Council England. While we remain fully supported by these organisations we cannot rely on them solely to finance our ongoing work; for the next phase of our journey - rehearsing Where Home Is, getting Nora on the road, and kickstarting our research with Eleanor Bauer - we need the support of private individuals.

By donating to Nora you will be providing a group of artists with vital stability, decent wages and people power.  In order to bring Deborah and Eleanor’s radical dance work to the UK we need a team that is equipped and cared for, and your money will help us to do this. Financial stability is crucial for our project which centres around many hours of practice and research.

Your money will allow us to:

  • pay ourselves for rehearsal hours
  • pay our team - our rehearsal director, production manager and producer
  • subsidise childcare costs for Stephanie, who has a one year old, so that she can afford to work
  • pay choreographer Eleanor Bauer's fee and cover her travel to the UK and accommodation in London
  • pay for our own accommodation and per diems on tour
  • pay for studio hire

About Nora

"They are intellectually curious, funny and rude, possessed of chameleon stage talents and a taste for risk" - The Guardian, of Nora's first show, Nora Invites

As a trio of dancers we invite choreographers to create new work for us to perform. Since 2015 we have been working together curating, performing and touring in the UK and mainland Europe. Nora is an ongoing dancer-led project and aside from making performances we also teach, research, write and advocate for ethical and safe practice. We use our work to question power structures, reshuffle hierarchies, and forefront the agency of dancers in the working environment.

'It’s great to see these performers with their feisty, feminist agenda owning the stage, rather than decorating it.’ - London Dance

Looking ahead

Our 2019 performances will be big events in themselves but also a springboard into Nora's next chapter: tour booking nationally and internationally for 2020, developing relationships with new and existing partners, and galvanising financial support for our next commission: Nora Invites Eleanor Bauer.

About Deborah Hay

Deborah Hay. Photo by Ralf Hiemisch.

Deborah Hay is one of the most influential choreographers of postmodern dance in the 20th and 21st centuries. Her creative energy, methods and practice inspire generations of dancers around the world.

Deborah Hay on Where Home Is:

'I am interested in choreography that does not look like anything and is performed by exceptionally astute and experienced dancers. Their behaviour disorienting, comfortingly spare, right in silence. Gone the predator, no do-gooders around, everything moves, inextricably bound.'

About Eleanor Bauer

Eleanor Bauer is an American choreographer and dancer from Santa Fe. Her work is at the intersection of choreography, dance, text, music and performance. She is currently a PhD candidate in Choreography at Stockholm University of the Arts.

Eleanor says our research will start with the choreographic questions arising from her PhD:

My research is basically a lot of dancing and writing – an effort to language our danced experience, however poetically, inventively, plainly or sloppily works best for the practitioner - and then messing around with mining that language for score material. Or the writing can be just writing: essays, poetry, song lyrics, programme notes. It has many ways of making itself useful.’ - Eleanor Bauer, 2018

Risks and challenges

The dancers might get injured, the audiences might be unforgiving, the price of trains across the UK might soar.... BUT hopefully they won't!

We are confident that our experience as dancers and project directors, the support of our team and partners will carry us through smooth touring and research experiences.

Throughout 2019 we will be seeking future commissioning partners and more tour dates (for 2020 and 2021). Gathering this support will be challenging but we are hopeful that we will be successful.
